What to Do When Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince Online Matches Disconnect or Lag

If online matches in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince keep disconnecting, start with the Nintendo Switch connection test, then work through NAT type, latency, Wi‑Fi conditions and cabling. The game can still be played and completed offline, but online battles, Quickfire Contests and the Online Shop need an internet connection.

Some players call the game “Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.” Square Enix’s official title is DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince, and that is the name used below.

Start with the Switch connection test

Before changing router settings or reinstalling anything, measure the connection that the console is actually using. The test reports three useful clues: NAT type, download speed and upload speed. Those results describe your network path, not a hidden game setting.

  1. From the Switch Home menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Internet.
  3. Choose Test Connection.
  4. Write down the displayed NAT type, download speed, upload speed and any error code.

Nintendo’s current support guidance, accessed in 2026, gives reference figures of 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. These are reference requirements, not a guarantee that a match will be smooth: latency, wireless interference, NAT compatibility and congestion can still cause timeouts or mid-match drops even when the speed numbers exceed them.

How to read the result

  • NAT type: Nintendo explains that a non-optimal NAT can prevent peer-to-peer matchmaking. A restrictive result can stop you connecting to some opponents even when ordinary internet access works.
  • Latency: This is the time needed to send data to the other player and receive a response. Nintendo states that latency problems occur when that round trip takes too long; matchmaking can time out and real-time play can feel delayed.
  • Download speed: This is the rate at which the Switch receives data. Compare it with Nintendo’s 3 Mbps reference point, while remembering that other devices may be consuming the connection at the same time.
  • Upload speed: This is the rate at which the Switch sends data. Compare it with the 1 Mbps reference point. A busy upload, such as a backup or video call, can affect play even if download speed looks good.

Run the test again after every change below. Testing one change at a time tells you which action helped instead of mixing several adjustments and losing the diagnosis.

Fix Wi‑Fi conditions before changing anything advanced

Nintendo identifies weak wireless signal, interference, high latency and slow network devices as common causes of lag and disconnects. These are often easier to correct than NAT problems.

Improve the console’s wireless path

  1. Move the Switch or its dock closer to the wireless router. Keep the router and console in open air rather than behind a television, inside a cabinet or next to large metal objects.
  2. Reduce obstacles between them. Floors, thick walls and appliances can weaken the signal.
  3. Move sources of interference away from the router and dock. Other wireless devices and crowded radio channels can create bursts of packet loss that are noticeable in a match.
  4. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams and other heavy traffic on the same network while you play.
  5. After each adjustment, use System Settings → Internet → Test Connection and then try another match.

A faster package from your internet provider does not automatically remove wireless interference. If the Switch is far from the router or the local network is busy, improving the radio link can matter more than raising the advertised internet speed.

Restart the local network when the result is suddenly worse

If the connection was previously reliable and has deteriorated, power-cycle the router and any separate modem according to the manufacturer’s normal procedure, then wait for internet service to return before testing the Switch. Do not repeatedly restart during a match; use the test screen to confirm that the network is back before launching online play.

Try a wired Ethernet connection

Ethernet removes the Switch’s wireless signal and radio interference from the path. Nintendo recommends trying a wired connection where possible when troubleshooting lag. It is especially useful when Wi‑Fi test results vary from one attempt to the next.

Dock and adapter requirements

  • The Nintendo Switch OLED dock includes a built-in LAN port.
  • A standard Switch dock does not include a built-in Ethernet port. It can use a compatible Nintendo Switch LAN adapter connected to a USB port on the dock.
  • Use a sound Ethernet cable from the dock or adapter to the router. Nintendo also recommends trying another cable if the first may be damaged.
  1. Connect the Ethernet cable to the router.
  2. Connect the other end to the OLED dock’s LAN port or to a compatible LAN adapter on a standard dock.
  3. Place the Switch in the dock and open System Settings → Internet.
  4. Run Test Connection again and record the new NAT and speed results.
  5. Play a test match. If the wired result is stable while Wi‑Fi was not, keep using Ethernet for online sessions.

Check the adapter’s current model compatibility before buying one. The accessory only helps if it is supported by the dock and recognized by the console; it cannot repair an ISP outage or a restrictive upstream NAT by itself.

Understand NAT and matchmaking failures

DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince uses online communication that depends on both players being reachable. Nintendo explains that NAT compatibility affects peer-to-peer matchmaking. A non-optimal NAT can therefore produce a failure to find an opponent, a timeout while joining, or a disconnect before the battle begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the problem affects every opponent

If matchmaking fails with everyone, compare the Switch test result with the reference speed figures and inspect the NAT result first. A restrictive NAT, unstable latency or a failed connection test points to your network rather than to a particular opponent. Try the Wi‑Fi and Ethernet steps, then follow the displayed error-code guidance if the test itself fails.

When only one friend cannot connect

If you can play with other opponents but a particular friend cannot join, Nintendo says that player’s network may be the source. Have both players run the same test and compare:

  • NAT type
  • Download speed
  • Upload speed
  • Any error code

The comparison should be made under similar conditions: each person should test the connection they will use for the match, not a phone or computer on a different network. If one player has a restrictive NAT or a failed test, that player should troubleshoot locally first. If both results look suitable but the pairing still times out, record the exact timing and error message for support rather than assuming the game servers are down.

What to do when a match lags after it starts

Lag during an active battle usually points to latency, packet loss, interference or congestion rather than a lack of download capacity. Use a controlled sequence so you can tell whether the symptom changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: establish a baseline

Run the Switch connection test and note the time, NAT type and speed readings. Describe the symptom precisely: delayed commands, a frozen opponent, a sudden return to the menu or a complete loss of connection. The distinction helps separate a real-time latency problem from a matchmaking failure.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Step 2: remove local congestion

Stop large downloads and uploads on the home network, pause streaming on other devices and avoid starting a backup while playing. Test again. If the match improves only when other traffic is stopped, the local network is competing for capacity or creating queueing delay.

Step 3: improve or replace Wi‑Fi

Move the dock closer to the router and reduce interference, then run the test and try another match. If readings fluctuate or the problem returns whenever the console is moved away, Wi‑Fi remains the weak link.

Step 4: switch to Ethernet

Use the OLED dock’s LAN port or a compatible adapter with a standard dock. Try another Ethernet cable if necessary, test again and compare the result with the wireless baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: check both players

For a friend-specific problem, have the other player repeat the same sequence. A stable wired connection on your side cannot compensate for severe latency or NAT restrictions on the other side.

Connection-test errors and escalation

If Test Connection fails, preserve the exact error code and wording. Nintendo provides error-code instructions that identify the next network check; follow those instructions rather than guessing at router changes. If the code points outside the console, contact the internet service provider or the person who administers the network, such as a school, workplace or shared-building administrator.

When contacting support, provide:

  • The Switch model and whether the test used Wi‑Fi or Ethernet
  • NAT type and both speed readings
  • The complete error code
  • Whether every opponent fails or only one friend
  • Whether the issue occurs at matchmaking, during a battle or when opening an online menu
  • What changed after moving closer to the router, pausing traffic or using Ethernet

This information separates a console configuration issue from an upstream network restriction and avoids repeating steps that have already been tested.

Wi‑Fi versus Ethernet: which fix fits your symptom?

Situation Wi‑Fi action Ethernet action What to verify
Signal is weak or inconsistent Move the dock nearer to the router and reduce interference. Use the OLED dock’s LAN port or a compatible adapter with a standard dock. Run the connection test after each change and compare latency symptoms in a match.
Other devices are busy Pause downloads, streams and backups. Use a wired link, but still stop heavy traffic that saturates the router or internet line. Whether lag disappears when competing traffic stops.
Matchmaking fails with everyone Improve the wireless path, then inspect NAT. Retest NAT over Ethernet; a cable does not automatically make NAT suitable. NAT type, speed readings and any error code.
Only one friend cannot connect Have both players test their own networks. Have the affected player test Ethernet if available. Whether one player has a restrictive NAT or failed connection test.

Can you play offline if online matches keep dropping?

Yes. Square Enix states that DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince can be played and completed without an internet connection. You can continue the single-player campaign while diagnosing your network or while online service is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connectivity-dependent features are:

  • Online Battles: require an internet connection to match and communicate with another player.
  • Quickfire Contests: require an internet connection.
  • Online Shop: requires an internet connection.

Offline progress does not prove that the network is healthy, and online disconnections do not prevent you from continuing the story. Treat the two modes separately: use the connection test and network steps for online features, and launch the campaign when you need uninterrupted play.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

Nintendo’s guidance supports diagnosing NAT, latency, weak wireless conditions, interference, slow network devices and damaged cabling first. The available official information does not establish a confirmed, game-wide server outage or a universal network defect for DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince. Do not infer that servers are down merely because one match times out. Check your connection test, compare the other player’s results and look for a later official service notice before drawing that conclusion.

A compact troubleshooting checklist

  1. Open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection.
  2. Record NAT type, download speed, upload speed and any error code.
  3. Compare speeds with Nintendo’s 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload reference figures.
  4. Move the console closer to the router and reduce wireless interference.
  5. Pause heavy traffic on the same network.
  6. Retest after each change.
  7. Try Ethernet through an OLED dock LAN port or a compatible Nintendo Switch LAN adapter on a standard dock.
  8. Try another Ethernet cable if the current one may be damaged.
  9. If only one friend is affected, have both players compare their test results.
  10. If the test fails, follow Nintendo’s error-code instructions or contact the ISP or network administrator.
  11. If online play remains unavailable, continue the offline story; Quickfire Contests and the Online Shop can wait until connectivity returns.
