What to do when cyberbullying affects a child’s mental health

If online bullying is affecting a child’s mood, sleep, school attendance, or sense of safety, respond on two tracks at once: check for immediate danger, then listen, preserve evidence, reduce the contact, and arrange support. Warning signs can justify a careful conversation, but they do not prove cyberbullying or diagnose a mental-health condition.

If the child may hurt themself or someone else, or is in immediate physical danger, stay with them and get urgent help. In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available by call, text, or chat; elsewhere, use your country’s crisis line or emergency service. UNICEF advises contacting police or emergency services in the child’s country when there is immediate danger.

1. Check immediate safety before investigating the posts

A calm safety check should come before questions about who started the bullying or whether the child should have replied. Ask directly, in a quiet place:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • “Do you feel in danger right now?”
  • “Are you thinking about hurting yourself?”
  • “Are you thinking about hurting someone else?”
  • “Is anyone threatening to come to the house, school, or another place you will be?”

Do not promise to keep a disclosure of imminent harm secret. Stay physically near the child, remove immediate means of harm when you can do so safely, and contact urgent help. StopBullying.gov says to get help right away when a child is at immediate risk of harming themself or others: What You Can Do. The CDC describes the U.S. 988 call, text, and chat service on its child mental-health guidance: Anxiety and Depression in Children. For a child outside the United States, use the local crisis service or emergency number rather than assuming 988 is available.

If there is an active threat, assault, stalking, or a plan to meet the harasser, contact local emergency services or police and tell the school or other responsible adults. Do not send the child to confront the person alone.

2. Start the conversation without blame

Choose a private moment when neither of you is rushing. Sit beside the child rather than standing over them, and begin with what you have observed: “I’ve noticed you are sleeping poorly and avoiding your phone. I’m worried and I want to understand.” StopBullying.gov recommends recognizing changes, talking with the child, and learning what happened; UNICEF encourages children experiencing cyberbullying to reach out to a trusted adult (StopBullying.gov; UNICEF cyberbullying guidance).

Questions that invite, rather than interrogate

  • “What happened, and where did it happen?”
  • “How long has this been going on, and who can see it?”
  • “What has it changed about sleep, school, friends, or how safe you feel?”
  • “What have you already tried?”
  • “What would you like me to do first?”

Listen all the way through before suggesting a solution. Say explicitly that the abuse is not the child’s fault and that asking for help was the right choice. Avoid questions that imply blame, such as why the child shared a photo or did not block the account sooner. If the child is not ready to explain everything, agree on a smaller next step—such as showing one message or choosing another trusted adult—and return to the conversation later.

Respect the child’s voice while keeping responsibility with adults

Children may fear losing their phone, being moved schools, or making the bullying worse. Explain which actions you will take, which choices they can make, and what information you must share for safety. A child can help choose whether a parent, counselor, teacher, coach, or relative joins the plan, but an adult must act when there is serious risk.

3. Recognize warning signs without diagnosing

Changes can be a reason to talk and assess, not proof that cyberbullying caused a mental-health condition. The same pattern can arise from depression, anxiety, family stress, physical illness, conflict, or another online problem. StopBullying.gov and the CDC list signs that merit attention, including:

Possible change What to do with the information
Sudden changes in device use, hiding the screen, or intense distress while using a device Ask what happens online and whether a particular account, group, or time of day is involved; do not search the device secretly as your first response.
Withdrawing from friends or activities, losing interest, or appearing persistently sad or fearful Ask about mood and safety, then consider a health-care or mental-health appointment if the change persists or interferes with daily life.
Sleep problems, frequent headaches, or stomachaches Arrange a medical discussion as well as an online-safety conversation; physical symptoms deserve evaluation.
Declining grades, missing school, or reluctance to attend Ask the child and school what is happening in classes, transport, group chats, and extracurricular activities.

These examples are drawn from StopBullying.gov’s Parent Guide to Cyberbullying and Digital Awareness (reviewed December 10, 2025), StopBullying.gov’s parent guidance, and the CDC’s Bullying page. A single bad evening is not a diagnosis; a sustained or escalating change deserves attention.

4. Preserve evidence before it disappears

Once the child is safe and willing, make a factual record. UNICEF explains that cyberbullying leaves a digital footprint that can help adults address the behavior and emphasizes: “For bullying to stop, it needs to be identified and reporting it is key” (UNICEF).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Take screenshots that show the account name, date, time, message or image, and the surrounding context. Save the original files rather than relying only on a cropped image.
  2. Record the platform, profile or group, the child’s username, and the URL if the service provides one.
  3. Keep a simple incident log: when it appeared, who saw it, what the child experienced, and whether there was a threat or offline contact.
  4. Do not forward intimate images, threats, or humiliating material to friends. Store evidence securely and share it only with people who need it to protect the child.
  5. If the content may involve sexual exploitation, extortion, or a credible physical threat, avoid negotiating with the sender and contact law enforcement or a child-protection service in your jurisdiction.

Evidence can be harder to retrieve after an account is deleted or a message expires, so save it before blocking when doing so will not increase danger. If saving it would expose the child to more harm, prioritize safety and ask a school, platform, clinician, or law-enforcement professional how to preserve it.

5. Report, block, and reduce exposure

Use the platform’s tools

Report the post, message, account, or group through the service’s current reporting path. Select the category that most accurately describes the conduct—harassment, threats, impersonation, non-consensual intimate imagery, or another applicable category—and keep the confirmation number or email. Platform menus and response times change, so follow the service’s instructions rather than relying on a generic button name. Blocking or muting can stop notifications and reduce exposure; discuss the timing with the child so they do not feel their account has been taken away without explanation.

When classmates or school life are involved

Contact the school when the people involved are classmates, when the behavior affects attendance or learning, or when online conduct spills into the campus or school transport. Share the factual log and ask who will handle the report, how the child will be protected from retaliation, and when you will receive an update. School duties, privacy rules, discipline procedures, and definitions of bullying vary by jurisdiction, so ask for the applicable written policy. StopBullying.gov provides parent guidance for middle-school situations at Bullying Prevention for Parents of Middle School Students.

Do not organize a public confrontation or demand that the child meet the alleged bully. A school may need to interview students separately, adjust seating or supervision, provide a safe arrival plan, or connect the child with a counselor. Ask what temporary protections can start while the investigation proceeds.

6. Choose the next help based on urgency and setting

The right route depends on four variables: whether there is immediate danger, where the behavior occurs, what the child is willing to do, and what services exist where you live.

Situation First route Useful next action
Immediate risk of self-harm, harm to others, or physical attack Local emergency service; in the U.S., call, text, or chat 988 for crisis support Stay with the child, state the exact safety concern, and follow the responder’s instructions.
Ongoing distress that disrupts sleep, eating, school, friendships, or daily routines Child’s health-care provider or a qualified mental-health professional Bring the incident log and describe changes over time; ask about assessment and treatment options.
Harassment is mainly on one platform Platform reporting and account-safety tools Save evidence, report, block or mute as appropriate, and check for linked accounts or re-contact.
Classmates, school groups, or attendance are involved School administrator, counselor, or social worker Ask for the written policy, immediate safety measures, and a follow-up date.
Child fears speaking to a parent Another trusted adult chosen with the child Keep the communication channel open and coordinate with the adult rather than abandoning the concern.

7. Arrange professional mental-health support when distress persists

Persistent or extreme sadness or fear, or symptoms that interfere with everyday life, warrant a conversation with the child’s health-care provider or a mental-health specialist. A primary-care clinician can check for physical contributors, assess mood and anxiety, and refer to an appropriate professional. A school counselor or social worker may help coordinate support, but school-based help does not replace urgent care when safety is at risk. The CDC discusses anxiety and depression in children and when to seek help at Anxiety and Depression in Children (May 15, 2026).

What to bring to an appointment

  • A timeline of posts, messages, threats, and changes in behavior.
  • The child’s own description of what feels most frightening or disruptive.
  • Information about sleep, appetite, physical symptoms, school attendance, and previous support.
  • Questions about confidentiality, how the child can participate in decisions, and what information must be shared for safety.

Do not wait for a formal diagnosis before improving safety. Reporting, blocking, school protections, and supportive care can proceed while an assessment is arranged.

8. Keep trust and safety working together

StopBullying.gov notes that “Cyberbullying often requires different strategies than in-person bullying” (Parent Guide to Cyberbullying and Digital Awareness). Abruptly confiscating every device may cut off friends, schoolwork, or the very evidence adults need, and can make a child less likely to disclose the next incident. Instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Agree on practical boundaries, such as turning off notifications at bedtime, using privacy settings, and checking in at a set time.
  • Decide together which accounts or group chats should be muted, blocked, or temporarily paused.
  • Keep at least one safe way for the child to contact supportive friends, school, or crisis services.
  • Revisit the plan after reports are filed or the school responds; online harassment can move to a new account.
  • Watch for retaliation, renewed threats, or worsening symptoms and escalate promptly.

Tell the child what adults have done and what will happen next. Predictability helps restore control without making the child responsible for stopping the abuse.

9. Put prevalence figures in the right context

The CDC reports school-level estimates from a national survey, not an individual child’s probability and not the percentage of children whose mental health was affected. Schools reported bullying at least once a week at these rates:

School level Bullying at school at least weekly Cyberbullying at least weekly
Middle schools 28% 37%
High schools 15% 25%
Elementary schools 10% 6%

These figures are reported on the CDC’s Bullying | Youth Violence Prevention page. The reviewed sources do not provide a directly comparable prevalence figure for the narrower group “children whose mental health is affected by cyberbullying,” so the school-frequency numbers should not be presented as that statistic.

10. A short action plan for the next 24 hours

  1. Ask about immediate danger and thoughts of self-harm or harming someone else. Use local emergency services; in the United States, call, text, or chat 988 for crisis support.
  2. Listen privately, affirm that the child is not to blame, and ask what support feels safest.
  3. Save screenshots and a dated incident log before content disappears, when doing so is safe.
  4. Report the content, block or mute the account as appropriate, and preserve confirmation details.
  5. Notify the school if classmates, school activities, or attendance are involved; request immediate safety measures and a follow-up date.
  6. Book a health-care or mental-health appointment when distress is persistent, severe, or disrupting daily life.
  7. Agree on device, notification, and check-in boundaries that reduce exposure without cutting off support.
