On most Chromebooks, press Alt + Search (also called the Launcher key) to turn Caps Lock on or off. On keyboards that support it, Fn + Quick Insert is another documented option. If you are using a Windows keyboard, its Windows key—the key between Ctrl and Alt—acts as the Chromebook Search/Launcher key.
If the shortcut still fails, work through the checks in order: verify the key combination, inspect keyboard remapping, restart and test as a guest, run ChromeOS keyboard Diagnostics, and only then consider a hardware reset, factory reset, or manufacturer support. This sequence separates a wrong or changed shortcut from an account, software, or physical-key problem.

Use the correct Caps Lock shortcut first
Chromebooks generally do not have a traditional Caps Lock key. ChromeOS documents a shortcut instead. The exact key name depends on the keyboard in front of you.

Press and hold Alt, tap Search or Launcher once, and release both keys. Look for the Caps Lock indicator or type in a text field to verify the state. If you are using an external keyboard, do not assume that a key with a similar icon has the same function; ChromeOS interprets the layout it detects.

Check whether Search or Launcher was remapped
A remapped key is one of the most common reasons the documented combination appears to stop working. ChromeOS lets you assign Search/Launcher to Caps Lock. Once that assignment is changed, the key may no longer open Search or Launcher, and Alt plus that key may not behave as you expect.
- Open the Settings app.
- Choose Device, then Keyboard.
- Open Remap keyboard keys. The wording can vary slightly by ChromeOS version or device.
- Find the Search or Launcher key and inspect its current action.
- If it is assigned to Caps Lock, decide whether that is intentional. Restore its normal Search/Launcher action if you want to use Alt + Search as the toggle.
- Save the change, close Settings, and test the shortcut in a text field.
Remapping can also be useful when the physical Search key is difficult to press: assigning Search/Launcher itself to Caps Lock gives you a direct Caps Lock key. The trade-off is that the original Search/Launcher behavior changes. Change one assignment at a time so you can identify which setting affects the result.
Make sure the key is registering
A shortcut requires both key presses to reach ChromeOS. A working Alt key paired with a key that is not registering will look like a shortcut problem, while a working Search key paired with a faulty Alt key produces the same symptom.

- Try the left and right Alt keys, if your keyboard has both.
- Press Search or Launcher by itself. It should open the launcher or search interface unless you deliberately remapped it.
- Test Alt with another shortcut you already know, such as a text-editing command, to see whether Alt is recognized.
- Remove anything physically obstructing the key and try a gentle, deliberate press rather than holding the keys for several seconds.
- If you have a second keyboard, use it only as a test. A different result points toward the original keyboard or its layout, but does not by itself prove a particular component has failed.
With a Windows keyboard, use the Windows key in place of Search/Launcher. The key is normally positioned between Ctrl and Alt. The physical Windows logo does not mean Windows is running; ChromeOS assigns that key its Chromebook function when the keyboard is connected.
Restart and test outside your account
ChromeOS’s general keyboard troubleshooting starts with a restart, followed by a guest-session test. This removes temporary state and helps determine whether the problem is tied to your user profile.
- Save your work and turn the Chromebook off completely.
- Turn it on again and sign in normally.
- Open a text field and test Alt + Search or the alternative appropriate to your keyboard.
- If the shortcut still fails, sign out. At the sign-in screen choose Browse as Guest (the label may be presented as a guest-browsing option).
- In the guest session, open a text field and repeat the test.
If Caps Lock works in guest mode but not in your normal session, the account environment is implicated. Google’s general guidance describes removing and adding the affected account as an account-level troubleshooting step. Removing an account from the device does not delete the online account, but confirm that you know the account password and that important local data is synchronized before doing so. If the shortcut fails in both modes, continue with the keyboard and system checks below.

Run ChromeOS keyboard Diagnostics
The built-in Diagnostics tool can show whether ChromeOS receives individual key presses. It helps separate a physical-input problem from a shortcut or configuration problem; it does not identify the exact cause of a failed Caps Lock toggle on its own.
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Choose Diagnostics.
- Open the keyboard test and press Alt, Search/Launcher, and any other keys the test requests.
- Keep the Diagnostics window active while testing. Google notes that testing cannot continue when another window has focus.
Interpret the result carefully. If one of the keys does not register, the shortcut cannot work reliably until that input problem is addressed. If both keys register but the toggle fails, return to remapping and shortcut-conflict checks rather than assuming the keyboard is physically damaged.
Look for shortcut conflicts and customization
ChromeOS includes a Shortcuts app for customizable keyboard combinations. It can add, edit, delete, or reset shortcuts, but it is separate from the keyboard-key remapping page.

- A lock icon means a shortcut cannot be edited.
- Two actions can conflict when they use the same key combination. ChromeOS may require you to choose another combination or reassign an editable shortcut.
- Resetting a customizable shortcut affects that shortcut’s assignment; it is not a guaranteed reset for the Caps Lock toggle.
- The official shortcut documentation lists the Caps Lock combination, while the keyboard settings document Search/Launcher remapping. Do not assume the Shortcuts app provides a separate editor for the Caps Lock toggle itself.
Open the Shortcuts app only after confirming that the physical keys and remapping are correct. If you find a conflicting editable shortcut, select a combination that does not overlap with Alt plus Search/Launcher, then test again.

An external keyboard can be a useful temporary workaround when the built-in keyboard has an intermittent key. Choose one with a dedicated Caps Lock key if you need dependable typing immediately. This bypasses the Chromebook shortcut, but it does not repair a ChromeOS remapping or software conflict.

Use resets only for the problems they address
If restart, guest testing, remapping review, and Diagnostics do not resolve the issue, Google’s general keyboard guidance includes broader reset options. These are not Caps Lock-specific fixes, so understand the impact before using them.
Hardware reset
A hardware reset is intended for certain Chromebook hardware or embedded-controller conditions. Follow the reset procedure supplied for your Chromebook model. Because the exact key sequence can vary, use the manufacturer’s instructions for that device rather than applying a generic sequence from another model. A hardware reset should not be your first response to a remapped key.
Factory reset (Powerwash)
For problems associated with the owner account, Google includes a factory reset among its general troubleshooting measures. A factory reset erases local user data and settings from the Chromebook. Back up or synchronize files first, make sure you can sign in again, and treat this as a last-resort software step. It cannot fix a physically failed key.
Know when to contact the manufacturer
Contact the Chromebook manufacturer when a key consistently fails in Diagnostics, the shortcut fails in both your account and guest mode, or the problem continues after the documented software checks and an appropriate reset. Have the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, keyboard type, and the results of the guest and Diagnostics tests ready. Explain whether Search/Launcher alone works, whether Alt registers, and whether an external keyboard behaves differently. Those details help support distinguish a key mechanism or keyboard assembly issue from an account configuration problem.
A quick decision path
- Wrong combination: use Alt + Search/Launcher, or Fn + Quick Insert only if your keyboard supports it. On a Windows keyboard, substitute the Windows key for Search/Launcher.
- Changed assignment: inspect Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys and restore or intentionally set the Search/Launcher action.
- Account-specific behavior: restart, then test in a guest session. If guest works, follow account-level troubleshooting before changing hardware.
- Input failure: run Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics while keeping that window active. A key that fails there needs hardware-focused support.
- Conflict or persistent system issue: review editable Shortcuts app entries, then consider the manufacturer’s hardware-reset instructions or an owner-account factory reset only when appropriate.
The practical distinction is simple: a Caps Lock shortcut can fail because the wrong key is being used, because Search/Launcher was reassigned, because an account or shortcut conflict intercepts the command, or because one of the keys is not registering. Testing in that order avoids erasing data or replacing hardware before you know which category fits.
