If the games on a retro handheld vanish, do not format the card immediately. First determine whether the menu merely lost its ROM index, one emulator core is failing, the microSD card is corrupted, or the system installation needs to be rebuilt. Seat the card before startup, refresh the ROM list, and preserve any accessible saves before attempting firmware recovery.
Identify what “disappeared” means
A blank game menu and deleted files are not necessarily the same problem. Many handheld launchers build a library listing at startup. If that listing is stale or the card was inserted after the device booted, the games can appear to be gone while the files remain on the card.

| Symptom | Most useful first check | Likely scope |
|---|---|---|
| No games are listed, but the handheld still boots | Power off, insert the card fully, restart, and use the launcher’s ROM-refresh function | Library detection or card-read problem |
| Only one or a few games refuse to start | Check the ROM folder and try another compatible RetroArch core | File, format, or emulator-core problem |
| Every previously installed game is absent or fails | Test the card on a computer and inspect the system installation | Corruption, incompatibility, or incomplete installation |
| The handheld will not boot after a card change or flash | Stop repeated attempts and verify exact-model firmware | System-card or firmware mismatch |
This distinction determines how much data risk you face. A refresh is normally non-destructive; formatting or flashing can erase the system card and saves.
Start with non-destructive checks
1. Shut down before touching the card
Use the device’s normal shutdown command if it still responds, then remove power if necessary. Do not pull the microSD card while the handheld is writing a save or configuration file. Insert the card before powering on. A card that is only partly seated may let the system boot while preventing the launcher from reading the game partition.

2. Refresh the ROM list
Miyoo’s troubleshooting guidance specifically tells users to insert the card before startup and refresh the ROM list after booting. Look for a menu item named Refresh ROMs, Refresh game list, or similar; the wording depends on the launcher and model. If the games reappear after the refresh, the listing was out of date. That result does not prove that any ROM was deleted.
3. Check whether the card is visible elsewhere
Power off again, remove the card, and inspect it with a computer using a compatible microSD reader. If the computer shows the expected folders and files, copy accessible save files and personal data to a separate location before changing anything. If the card is intermittently readable, copy the most important files first and avoid repeatedly opening, closing, or repairing it.
A card that is completely unreadable, repeatedly disconnects, or reports a filesystem error may be damaged. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal recovery method for an unstable card, so do not promise that routine formatting or file copying will retrieve lost data.

Check the expected folder and file type
A game can disappear from one system’s menu if it is in the wrong console folder, has an extension the launcher does not scan, or was renamed in a way the frontend does not handle. Compare the file’s location with the folders used by other working games for the same platform. Do not move large groups of files until you have backed up the card.
Try the corresponding emulator core
Miyoo advises trying a different RetroArch core when an individual game will not load. A core is the emulator engine selected for a particular system or game. Open the game’s launch or core-selection menu, choose another core that supports that console, and test again. Keep the original core available so you can reverse the change.

This test is useful when the menu lists the title but returns to the launcher, freezes on a black screen, or fails only for certain games. If several files from the same platform fail, check the card and system files as well; a single bad file and a broader storage problem can look similar.
Do not replace a failed file with an unauthorised download
Finding a replacement online may create a copyright problem and may introduce malware or a file in the wrong format. Use game files you are authorized to access. The rights status of every ROM bundled with every handheld is not established here, so check the law that applies where you live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the whole library is missing
Test the card before rebuilding the system
If no games appear after a restart and ROM refresh, inspect whether the card is mounted and readable on a computer. Look for the launcher, system, and platform folders expected by your model. A missing game folder can indicate accidental deletion, but a card that cannot be read at all points more strongly toward corruption or hardware failure.
Miyoo identifies card corruption, incompatibility, and an incomplete system installation as possible causes when games do not appear. Its guidance includes trying a different card with the appropriate firmware. Do not assume that a new card contains your old games: a blank replacement card has no ROMs, save states, or configuration unless you supply authorized files and the correct system setup.
Separate card failure from a broken handheld
If the handheld boots normally with one card but not another, the card or its installation is the leading suspect. If multiple known-good, correctly prepared cards fail in the same way, the card slot, power system, or device firmware may be involved. Record exactly what happens—boot logo, error message, blank screen, or return to the menu—before contacting support.

Back up saves before formatting or flashing
Save files are often stored separately from the ROM images, and a firmware operation can remove both. Copy accessible saves, save states, screenshots, BIOS files that you are entitled to use, and personal configuration files to a computer or another card. Keep the original card untouched while you test a copy whenever the card is readable.
Recommended Free Tools
ANBERNIC’s RG40XXH support guidance warns that flashing rewrites the system card and tells owners to back up important data first. Its warning is practical for any destructive recovery: treat a flash as an erase-and-reinstall operation unless the exact instructions for your model explicitly say otherwise.
- Use a reader that can reliably detect the card and avoid disconnecting it during a copy.
- Copy irreplaceable saves before large ROM folders.
- Keep the original card in a safe place instead of formatting it as soon as a new card works.
- Do not assume a computer’s automatic “repair” prompt is safe for a failing card; preserve an image or the most important files first when possible.
Restore the system on an exact-model card
Confirm the precise model and hardware revision
Find the manufacturer’s support page for the exact handheld name and revision printed on the device or packaging. Similar names do not guarantee compatible firmware. ANBERNIC’s RG40XXH instructions explicitly say to use RG40XXH firmware and not firmware for another model. Its support page lists firmware, manuals, and tutorials, but the available file and version can change; verify the current entry before downloading.
The ANBERNIC RG40XXH support entry displayed a firmware date of May 21, 2026. That date identifies the entry shown on the support page, not a promise that every region or later revision uses the same file. Follow the current model-specific instructions rather than copying a package intended for a related handheld.
Use a replacement microSD card only when it matches the device
A new card is appropriate when the original is damaged, corrupted, or unreadable, provided its capacity, filesystem, and partition layout are supported by the handheld. The available guidance does not establish a universal maximum capacity or preferred brand, so use the limits and formatting instructions published for your model. A USB microSD reader is useful for preparing and inspecting the card, but it is unnecessary if your computer already has a compatible reader.

Prepare the card and install the official system
- Download the official firmware package for the exact model and revision from the manufacturer’s support page.
- Read the model’s flashing or installation instructions completely before connecting the card. Note whether the package expects a particular filesystem, partition layout, or folder name.
- Back up any readable data from the old card. Flashing can overwrite the system card.
- Prepare the replacement card exactly as the instructions specify, using a reliable reader and a stable computer connection.
- Install the firmware, safely eject the card, insert it while the handheld is powered off, and start the device.
- After the system boots, refresh the ROM list. Restore only authorized game files and backed-up saves to the folders required by the launcher.
Do not improvise by renaming firmware archives, mixing files from two models, or copying a system partition from a different handheld. Those shortcuts can produce a device that boots to a logo but cannot mount the game partition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Official firmware or custom firmware?
Why official firmware is the first recovery path
Official firmware is the safest baseline when the failure involves booting, card detection, or missing system files because it is supplied for the device’s hardware. Miyoo directs users toward firmware appropriate for their console, and ANBERNIC warns against cross-model firmware. Establish a working official installation before investigating alternatives.
When MinUI may be relevant
MinUI is a separate launcher and libretro frontend, not a universal repair package. Its GitHub documentation lists the devices it supports, and that compatibility list can change. Consider it only after checking the current project documentation against your exact handheld and revision. Installing an unsupported custom system can create another compatibility problem and may complicate manufacturer support.
Choose a recovery path by risk and scope
| Recovery path | Use it when | Data risk | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and refresh the ROM list | The device boots and the card is seated | Low | Repair a physically failing card |
| Change the core for one game | A title is listed but will not launch | Low | Fix a missing system installation |
| Inspect and copy the existing card | The card is readable on a computer | Low if copied carefully | Recover files from an unreadable card by itself |
| Install official firmware on a replacement card | The old card is corrupted, damaged, or incomplete | High to the old card if it is flashed or formatted | Supply ROMs or saves you do not have |
| Install a supported custom frontend | The device is confirmed compatible and the official system is understood | Variable | Guarantee compatibility with every hardware revision |
Copyright and bundled ROMs
Do not direct readers to random ROM-download sites. Nintendo’s official Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ states, “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That is Nintendo’s position concerning its games and is not a jurisdiction-specific ruling on every title or every handheld. The rights status of bundled files varies, so use games you are authorized to access and consult applicable local law when uncertain.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Restoring the operating system and restoring game content are separate tasks. Firmware can recreate the launcher and emulator files, but it cannot legitimately recreate ROMs or saves that were not backed up.
Know when to stop troubleshooting
Repeated flashing is unlikely to help if the card is physically failing or the firmware does not match the hardware. If a correctly prepared card with the exact official firmware still will not boot, contact the manufacturer or its after-sales support. ANBERNIC’s RG40XXH guidance specifically tells users to stop repeated flashing and seek support when the correct firmware does not resolve the issue. Miyoo likewise directs users to support when its troubleshooting steps fail.
Give support the model and revision, firmware filename and date, card type and filesystem, whether the card is readable on a computer, and the exact behavior on startup. Do not send personal saves or copyrighted game files unless support specifically requests information that you are authorized to provide.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Menu empty, device boots: reseat the card before startup and refresh the ROM list.
- One game fails: verify its folder and try another compatible RetroArch core.
- All games fail: test the card, preserve saves, and investigate corruption or incomplete system files.
- Card unreadable: avoid assuming formatting will recover data; replace it only after preserving what you can.
- Installing firmware: use the exact model and revision, back up first, and remember that flashing rewrites the system card.
- Replacing the card: verify supported capacity and filesystem; a new card does not include your old ROMs or saves.
- Still no boot: stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer.
