When interest rates rise, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds usually fall. Do not treat that price move alone as a reason to sell. First identify whether you own an individual bond or a bond fund, when you need the money, how much rate and credit risk you are carrying, and whether selling would turn a temporary market value into a realized loss.
An individual bond held to maturity can continue paying its stated interest and return face value under its terms, subject to issuer default and other conditions. A conventional bond fund has no maturity date for your shares, so its value can keep moving. The appropriate response depends on that distinction, your cash timetable, and the risks you can accept.

Why bond prices fall when rates rise
A fixed-rate bond makes contractual interest payments based on its coupon. When newly issued bonds begin offering higher yields, an older bond with a lower coupon is less attractive in the secondary market. Its price generally has to fall enough for a new buyer to earn a competitive yield from the remaining coupon payments and eventual principal repayment.
This is a market repricing, not automatically a sign that the issuer has missed a payment. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission explains the relationship in its Investor Bulletin on fixed-income investments: “The longer a bond’s maturity, the greater the risk that the bond’s value could be impacted by changing interest rates prior to maturity, which may have a negative effect on the price of the bond.”

The price change matters if you sell, use the bond as collateral, calculate your portfolio’s current value, or own a fund that must value its holdings each day. If you keep an individual bond and the issuer performs as promised, the interim quoted price does not change the coupon written into the bond or its scheduled face-value payment at maturity.
The trade-off behind the lower price
A lower price can improve the yield available to a new buyer, while an existing holder faces a lower market value. If rates later fall, the same bond could rise in price. Rate movements therefore create both a risk for a planned sale and a potential opportunity to reinvest, but neither direction is guaranteed.
Start with your cash deadline, not the market headline
Before changing a holding, answer these questions in order:
- When might you need the money? Separate emergency cash, a known payment date, and money intended for a distant goal.
- Can you avoid selling before the relevant maturity? An individual bond may fit a known future expense if its maturity and payment schedule match that expense.
- What exactly do you own? Record the issuer, coupon, maturity date, face value, credit quality, call features, and whether the position is an individual bond, a target-maturity holding, or a conventional bond fund.
- How sensitive is it to rates? Check duration and maturity. Longer maturities and higher duration generally mean larger price responses to a given rate move.
- What would a transaction change? Include bid-ask spreads, commissions, taxes, fund expenses, and the loss of future interest payments if you sell.
This inventory prevents a common mistake: selling solely because an account statement shows a loss, without checking whether the investment still matches the date on which the money is needed.
Understand duration and maturity
Maturity is the date on which an individual bond is scheduled to repay principal. Duration is an estimate of how sensitive a bond or bond portfolio’s price is to a change in yields. It incorporates the timing of coupon and principal cash flows, so two bonds with the same maturity can have different duration.

The Vanguard duration glossary describes duration as a practical measure of interest-rate sensitivity. It is an estimate, not a guarantee: the actual result can differ because yields may move by different amounts across maturities, credit spreads can change, and a bond may be called or prepaid.
| Measure | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Maturity | When an individual bond is scheduled to repay principal, assuming the issuer performs. | How large the market-price move will be before that date by itself. |
| Duration | The approximate price sensitivity to a change in yields. | A guaranteed loss or gain, or a forecast of future interest rates. |
| Credit quality | How much issuer-payment risk you may be taking. | Protection from rate-driven price changes. |
| Call or prepayment terms | Whether the issuer may repay earlier than the final maturity under stated conditions. | A certainty that you will receive the original schedule. |
If you own an individual bond
Holding to maturity can be reasonable when the cash flow fits
If you do not need to sell and the issuer remains able to pay, holding an individual bond to its scheduled maturity generally preserves the contractual coupon payments and face-value repayment described in its terms. The SEC’s corporate-bond bulletin emphasizes that those payments remain subject to the bond’s conditions and the issuer’s ability to pay.
Recommended Free Tools
“Hold to maturity” is not the same as “cannot lose money.” Default can prevent scheduled payments, inflation can reduce purchasing power, and a call can change the timing of cash flows. You also bear opportunity cost if newly available yields are higher than the coupon on your bond.
Selling before maturity realizes the market price
A sale before maturity converts the current quoted value into cash. If rates rose after you bought the bond, that value may be below your purchase price. Selling also gives up the remaining coupons and any contractual principal payment that would have arrived later. A sale can nevertheless be sensible when your cash need has changed, the issuer’s credit outlook has deteriorated, the bond no longer fits your risk limits, or you have a deliberate plan to move into a better-matched holding.
Check call provisions before relying on a date
A callable bond may be repaid before its stated final maturity. Review the prospectus or trade confirmation for call dates, prices, notice provisions, and any sinking-fund or prepayment language. A call can remove a high-coupon asset when rates fall and leave you reinvesting at lower rates; it can also return cash earlier than your plan expected.

If you own a bond fund or ETF
Fund shares represent an interest in a portfolio, not a single bond that matures for you. The fund continuously buys and sells holdings, receives interest, distributes income according to its policy, and reports a changing net asset value. Even if individual bonds inside the portfolio mature, your shares do not automatically return to a fixed face value.

Use the fund’s fact sheet and shareholder report to check weighted-average maturity, duration, credit mix, concentration, distribution policy, expenses, and any stated target-maturity objective. The Investor.gov bond FAQ explains that bond investments still carry interest-rate, credit, liquidity, and other risks.
When continuing to hold may fit
Continuing to hold can make sense when the fund’s duration and credit exposure match a long-term allocation, you do not need the money soon, and you accept that the share price can remain volatile. Diversification may reduce the impact of one issuer’s problem, but it does not eliminate portfolio-wide rate risk.
When a change may be warranted
Consider a change when the fund’s duration is materially longer than your time horizon, its credit exposure is outside your tolerance, its distributions do not meet your cash plan, or you need money during a period when a sale could be costly. Compare the replacement’s duration, credit quality, liquidity, diversification, and ongoing costs rather than choosing solely by its recent return.
| Holding type | Does your position have a maturity date? | Main rate-related question |
|---|---|---|
| Individual bond | Yes, for that bond, subject to calls and default. | Can you hold it through the required date without selling? |
| Target-maturity portfolio | The portfolio has a target date, but your shares still trade at market value. | Does the target date and portfolio quality fit your cash need? |
| Conventional bond fund or ETF | No maturity date for your shares. | Is the ongoing duration appropriate for your horizon? |
Practical responses to a rate-driven decline
1. Hold and collect planned cash flows
For an individual bond whose maturity matches a known spending date, holding can avoid a forced sale. Keep monitoring the issuer, call status, and your liquidity reserve; do not treat the quoted price as irrelevant if your circumstances may require an early sale.

2. Shorten duration gradually
If you expect to need part of the money sooner, you can direct new contributions or reinvested proceeds toward shorter-duration bonds or funds. Shorter maturities generally fluctuate less from a given rate change, although they create more frequent reinvestment decisions and may offer lower yields when the curve changes.
3. Build or refine a bond ladder
A ladder staggers maturities so that portions of principal become available at different dates. The Vanguard bond-ladder guide describes how staggered maturities can align proceeds with future spending and create opportunities to reinvest as each bond matures.
A ladder does not remove market, credit, or liquidity risk. Bonds can still lose value before maturity, issuers can default, and selling an individual rung early may produce a loss. Match each rung to a realistic cash need rather than assuming every maturity will be available exactly when an expense occurs.
4. Diversify issuer and credit exposure
Rate risk is only one part of the decision. Review whether one issuer, sector, or lower-credit segment dominates the position. A diversified fund can spread issuer exposure, while a collection of individual bonds requires you to perform that diversification yourself. Higher stated yield often accompanies higher credit or liquidity risk; do not compare yields without comparing those risks.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute5. Keep near-term spending outside volatile holdings
Money needed for bills, emergencies, or a fixed near-term payment should not depend on selling a rate-sensitive asset on a particular day. Maintain an appropriate liquid reserve so a temporary market decline does not force an untimely sale.
Best Value
Risks that can make the decision different
Issuer default and credit deterioration
A falling price may reflect both higher market rates and concern about the issuer. Check current credit information, financial disclosures, covenant terms, and any missed or delayed payments. A promise to repay face value is contractual, not a guarantee that default cannot occur.
Liquidity
Some bonds trade infrequently. A displayed quote may not equal the price you can obtain for the size you want to sell. Ask for a current bid, understand the dealer’s spread, and avoid assuming that a paper loss is the same as the executable price—or that an executable price will remain available.
Call and prepayment risk
Callable or prepayable securities can return principal sooner than expected, particularly when rates fall. Reinvestment may then occur at a lower yield, while a call can also disrupt a ladder designed around final maturities.
Tax and account effects
The consequences of selling depend on the account type, your tax basis, holding period, local rules, and the security’s tax treatment. Transaction costs and taxes can outweigh a small expected benefit from switching. Consult the account provider or a qualified tax professional for your circumstances.
A step-by-step review you can repeat
- Make a position list. Record each security or fund, current value, coupon or distribution rate, maturity, duration, credit quality, call terms, and expenses.
- Map withdrawals. Write the amount and date of every planned withdrawal, then identify which holdings would fund it.
- Separate contractual and market values. For individual bonds, distinguish scheduled payments from today’s sale quote. For funds, treat the share value as continuously variable.
- Stress the risks. Ask what happens if rates rise again, the issuer is downgraded, a bond is called, or you must sell during thin trading.
- Compare alternatives on the same axes. Evaluate maturity and cash-flow fit, duration, credit risk, liquidity, diversification, and costs together.
- Choose an action and a review date. Possible actions include holding, selling part, shortening duration with new money, changing fund exposure, or constructing a ladder. Document why the action fits the cash plan.
- Recheck after material changes. Review when your spending date, income needs, issuer credit, fund duration, or account tax situation changes—not merely whenever a headline reports another rate move.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Equating a price decline with default: market repricing and missed payments are different events.
- Assuming every bond recovers automatically: recovery at maturity depends on the issuer and the bond’s terms, and does not apply to fund shares.
- Ignoring duration: two fixed-income holdings can react very differently even if both are described as “bonds.”
- Chasing the newest yield: a higher yield may compensate for greater credit, liquidity, call, or duration risk.
- Using a bond fund as a dated savings account: fund shares have no maturity date that guarantees a return of face value.
- Ignoring the cost of switching: spreads, commissions, taxes, and lost income can make an apparently small adjustment expensive.
There is no universal buy, sell, or hold instruction. A sound response connects the holding’s contractual terms and market risks to the date you need the money, while recognizing that rates, credit conditions, liquidity, and tax results can all change.
