A scam warning is a risk signal, not proof that a caller or message is fraudulent. First identify which app produced it, then verify the sender through a channel you find independently. After verification, use the app’s narrow correction—Report not spam for a Google Messages conversation, a per-call Scam Detection control in Phone by Google, or the answer/block choice on an eligible Samsung Galaxy phone. Do not click links, disclose one-time codes, install software, move money, or change security settings merely because an inbound message or caller demands it.
Identify which Android protection stopped the item
Android phones can show similar-looking warnings from different apps and services. The remedy depends on whether the item is a text conversation, an incoming call, or an OEM or carrier filter. Check the app name, wording of the notification, call-screen banner, and where the item appears in history.

Before overriding any warning, verify the contact safely
- Pause. Do not follow a link, read a verification code aloud, install an app, send money or alter account security because an inbound caller or text tells you to.
- End the call if needed. A legitimate organization can be contacted again through a number you locate yourself.
- Use an independent route. Open the organization’s official app, type its known website into the browser yourself, or call the number printed on a card, statement or official site. Never use a callback number supplied in the suspicious message.
- Check the context. Look for a transaction, appointment or support case you actually initiated. A familiar name or local-looking number is not proof of identity because caller ID and sender details can be spoofed.
- Only then correct the filter. If the contact is verified, apply the smallest change that restores it rather than disabling every protection.
Google reported that more than half of Americans received at least one scam call per day in 2024, citing its 2024 research in a 2025 announcement. The Global Anti-Scam Alliance figure cited in that same announcement estimated that more than $1 trillion was stolen from mobile consumers worldwide in 2024. Those figures explain why a warning deserves attention, but they do not establish that a particular call or message is a scam.

Restore a legitimate text in Google Messages
Find the filtered conversation
Google says suspected spam can be prevented from delivery and hidden in the Spam folder. Open Google Messages and inspect that folder before changing global settings. A message that never appeared in the main conversation list may still be available there for review.
Mark one conversation as not spam
- Open Google Messages.
- Open the Spam folder, or open the affected conversation if it is visible in the main list.
- Review the sender and content against information you verified independently.
- Tap Report not spam when that control is offered.
- Return to the conversation list and confirm that future messages from the sender are no longer being hidden, while continuing to treat unexpected requests cautiously.
Google’s support guidance describes both Report spam and Report not spam. Use the latter for a confirmed false positive; leave an uncertain message filtered until you can verify it. Reporting tells Google and participating operators whether the item was spam or not, so do not use the control simply to make an unverified message visible.

Review Spam Protection without turning it off first
The documented path is Google Messages > profile picture or initials > Messages settings > Protection and safety > Spam protection. Check that setting only after examining the Spam folder and blocked-number lists. Spam protection can be turned off, but disabling it globally removes filtering for future messages and is a poor first response to one legitimate conversation.
Google’s March 4, 2025 announcement says Scam Detection in Google Messages is included in Spam Protection, uses on-device AI, and covers SMS, MMS and RCS conversations with non-contacts. A warning can offer options to dismiss or to report and block the sender. The exact wording and rollout may differ by app version, language, country and device.

Handle a false warning during a Phone by Google call
Use the per-call control when available
Phone by Google Scam Detection is separate from Google Messages. If a verified caller triggers a warning, use the on-screen option to turn Scam Detection off for that call when it appears. Finish the conversation, then review the feature’s settings rather than leaving all call protection disabled by accident.
Understand what Phone by Google does and does not cover
Google’s 2025 announcement says the feature is off by default, analyzes potential scam calls on-device, and never applies during calls with your contacts. It also says call audio is handled ephemerally: no conversation audio or transcription is recorded, stored on the device, or sent to Google or third parties. Saving a verified number as a contact can therefore remove it from the documented contact-scoped detection, but carrier or OEM filters may still label the call.

Do not save a caller as a contact solely to silence a warning. Confirm who is calling first, and remember that a compromised or spoofed number can appear familiar.
Recognize the separate spoofed-call warning
Google’s 2026 fake-call announcement describes a separate verification warning for suspected spoofed calls. If that is the banner you see, use the Phone by Google settings control for that feature rather than changing Google Messages’ Spam Protection. Because names and availability can change with app updates, record the exact banner text when seeking support.

Check whether your phone qualifies
Samsung says AI Scam detection is available only on eligible Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Carrier, country, model and language support can affect availability. If the menu is missing, check the installed Android and One UI versions before assuming the feature is broken.

Open the Samsung control
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three dots).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Scam detection.
- When an alert appears on an eligible device, choose whether to Answer or Block after you have independently assessed the caller.
Samsung says alerts can use a tone or vibration selected in the feature and that the alert gives you the answer-or-block choice. The warning is not an identity guarantee in either direction: answering is appropriate only when the caller is expected or can be verified without relying on the incoming call itself.

When the legitimate item is still blocked
Check the obvious places
- Look in Google Messages’ Spam folder and the Phone app’s call history.
- Review blocked-number lists in the relevant messaging, phone and carrier apps.
- Confirm that the expected number or sender address is correct; organizations sometimes send from different systems for calls and texts.
- Update Google Messages, Phone by Google, Samsung Phone and the phone’s system software through the device’s normal update controls.
Collect precise details before requesting help
If false positives continue, contact the carrier or device maker with the exact phone model, Android or One UI version, app version, carrier, country or region, time of the event and a screenshot of the warning with personal information redacted. Mention whether the item was SMS, MMS, RCS or a voice call, and whether the sender was saved as a contact. This information distinguishes an app rule from a carrier or rollout limitation.
Do not weaken every filter as a workaround
Disabling all spam protection can expose future messages and calls while doing nothing to correct a carrier-level label. Correct the individual conversation or call first, then change a global setting only when you understand its scope and accept the trade-off.
Privacy and reporting choices
Google describes Phone by Google Scam Detection as on-device and ephemeral, with no conversation audio or transcription recorded, stored on the device or sent to Google or third parties. Google Messages’ reporting controls are different: choosing Report spam or Report not spam lets Google and operators know how the item should be classified. Samsung’s support description explains the alert and answer-or-block behavior but does not, in the cited material, establish identical processing or reporting details. Do not assume that one manufacturer’s privacy behavior applies to another app or to a carrier filter.
Why menus and results differ between phones
Feature availability changes with app version, Android release, Samsung One UI generation, model, language, country, carrier and default-app selection. A Pixel using Phone by Google may show a control that is absent on a third-party dialer. A Samsung phone can meet the Android and One UI requirements yet lack AI Scam detection because the specific model or region is unsupported. Google Messages may show different labels during a staged rollout. Use the app that displayed the warning and quote its exact wording when looking for instructions.
A practical decision checklist
- Warning on a text: open Google Messages’ Spam folder, independently verify the sender, then use Report not spam if offered.
- Warning during a Google phone call: verify the caller, use the per-call control if necessary, and review Phone by Google settings afterward.
- Warning on a supported Samsung Galaxy: use Phone > More options > Settings > Scam detection, then answer or block only after verification.
- No matching menu: check the phone model, Android or One UI version, app identity, carrier and region; do not assume another app’s instructions apply.
- Persistent false positives: update the apps, inspect blocked lists, preserve a screenshot and escalate with precise device and software details.
The essential rule
Restore access narrowly and verify independently. Google Messages’ Report not spam fixes a confirmed conversation; Phone by Google offers per-call or global Scam Detection controls; Samsung’s eligible phones let you answer or block after an alert. None of those warnings proves fraud, and none should be dismissed merely because the caller or sender claims urgency.
