Android’s warning is a signal to check, not proof that an item is fraudulent. The fix depends on which component acted: mark a legitimate call Not spam and then Unblock in Google Phone, recover a genuine conversation from Spam & blocked in Google Messages, or use Google Play Protect’s appeal process rather than disabling protection for an app.
Identify what made the decision before changing anything
Android has separate systems for calls, messages, scam warnings and applications. Reversing a decision in the wrong app will not change the other system, and overriding a warning can expose your account, payment details or device to fraud. First note exactly what you saw: a caller-ID label, a message moved to a spam folder, a “Likely scam” warning, or a Play Protect installation block.

Unblock a legitimate call in Google Phone
Verify the caller before changing the label
Google’s documentation says that when the caller ID reads “Suspected spam caller” or “Spam,” the call might be spam. The wording is deliberately cautious: the label is a prediction, not proof. Do not rely on the displayed number, a familiar logo or what the caller says about an urgent payment. Hang up and contact the person or organization through a number you already trust if the request involves money, passwords, one-time codes or remote access.

- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Recents and select the call that was incorrectly identified.
- Choose Not spam.
- Tap Unblock if the number is blocked.
Google says that marking the call as not spam provides feedback and that future calls from that number will not be marked as spam. It does not prove that every future call from the same number is safe; numbers can be reassigned or spoofed, so continue to check unexpected requests.

Change caller-ID and spam-protection settings
To review the controls that produced the warning, open Phone > Settings > Caller ID and spam. The caller-ID and spam-protection feature is on by default according to Google’s help documentation. You can review its options there rather than treating one mistaken label as a reason to turn off every warning.
If the caller is still blocked
- Check the number’s entry in the Phone app’s blocked-number list; a manual block is separate from a spam label.
- Confirm that you corrected the same number that called. Call centers may use several outbound numbers.
- Ask the organization to provide a callback route through its official website or a statement, not through a link or number in an unsolicited message.
- Keep the spam warning enabled if you regularly receive unknown calls; correcting one number does not require removing the broader protection.
Recover a genuine text from Spam & blocked
Understand what reporting did
In Google Messages, reporting a conversation as spam has two effects: it blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. That means a missing text may not have been deleted. It may be waiting in the folder because you, another user of the phone, or an automated filter reported it.

Review and restore a conversation
- Open Google Messages.
- Open the menu or account area and select Spam & blocked.
- Open the conversation and read the warning and sender details.
- If you have independently confirmed that the sender is legitimate, use the conversation’s Not spam or safe option and follow the prompt to unblock the sender.
Do not answer a message merely because it appears to come from a known company. Compare the sender and request with information in an existing account, statement or official site. A legitimate organization should not require you to disclose a password or verification code by replying to an unsolicited text.

When the warning says “Likely scam”
Scam Detection is a separate Messages feature. On supported devices, it can analyze a message and display a “Likely scam” warning. Google states that Scam Detection is available only on select devices and in listed countries and languages, so the exact behavior varies by phone, Android build, region and language.

Open the warning, review why the message was flagged, and choose Not a scam only after checking the sender through an independent channel. To find the feature’s control, search Android Settings for Scam Detection; the setting may not appear on an ineligible device or in an unsupported region or language.
Prevent a repeat mistake
- Save important contacts with a recognizable name, but still verify unexpected payment or sign-in requests.
- Do not forward a suspicious text to coworkers or family until you have checked it; forwarding can spread the same lure.
- If a genuine service uses a short code or rotating number, ask the service for its official messaging details rather than repeatedly disabling spam controls.
When Play Protect blocks or disables an app
What the warning means
Google Play Protect checks apps installed from Google Play and apps obtained from other sources. Depending on what it detects, it can warn you, prevent installation, disable an installed app, or remove harmful software. It can also stop an unverified app that requests sensitive permissions. A familiar app name or a download page that looks professional is not enough to establish that the file is safe.

Check the app before attempting an override
- Stop the installation and read the complete Play Protect message, including whether the app is described as harmful or unverified.
- Confirm where the file came from. Prefer the developer’s known official distribution channel and be suspicious of copied download pages, modified packages and unsolicited attachments.
- Verify the developer identity, spelling and support details independently. Look for consistency with the developer’s established app listing or official site, not only a logo inside the installer.
- Consider the permissions the app requests. An unrelated utility asking for SMS, accessibility, contacts, call logs or payment access deserves particular scrutiny.
- If you still believe the detection is wrong, use the appeal route Google provides for an incorrectly flagged or blocked app. Keep the warning enabled while the classification is reviewed.
Google’s Play Protect help specifically says that developers can appeal a mistaken classification. For a user, the practical rule is to follow the appeal or review option shown in the warning or associated Google help, rather than searching for an unofficial workaround. Do not broadly disable Play Protect just to install one file: doing so removes a safety check for other apps as well.

If an installed app was disabled or removed
Do not immediately reinstall the same package from another mirror. Record the app name, developer and source, then change passwords or revoke sessions if the app had access to an account and you now doubt its legitimacy. For a work, banking or government app, obtain the current installer through that organization’s independently verified channel. If the app is essential and the developer confirms a false detection, ask the developer to complete Google’s appeal process rather than instructing you to turn off device protection.

Why ordinary caller ID is not enough
Caller ID can be spoofed. A call displaying your bank’s published number may still originate from a scammer. If the caller asks for a one-time code, card PIN, full password, a transfer or remote-control software, end the call and start a new contact using the number printed on your physical payment card or the bank’s official website.
Use Verified financial calls when all requirements are met
Android’s Verified financial calls feature is not a universal bank-call guarantee. It requires Android 11 or later, the bank’s official app, a prior sign-in to that app, and participation by the bank. When supported, your phone can ask the bank’s official app for verification while the call is arriving. If verification fails, Android may end the call. Treat a failed verification as a reason to use an independent callback route, not as a reason to lower your standards.
Because participation and availability vary by bank and region, the absence of a verification prompt does not prove that a call is fraudulent or genuine. The independent callback rule remains the fallback.
A practical decision tree for false positives
- Was it a call? Verify the person or organization independently. In Recents, use Not spam, then Unblock for a genuine number.
- Was it a text in Spam & blocked? Open the conversation, inspect the warning and use the safe/not-spam control only after verification. Remember that spam reporting blocks the sender.
- Did Messages say “Likely scam”? Read the explanation and choose Not a scam only when the sender and request check out. Look for Scam Detection in Android Settings to review eligibility and settings.
- Was an app stopped, disabled or removed? Check its source, developer and permissions. Keep Play Protect active and use Google’s appeal route for a genuine false positive.
- Was the contact a financial institution? Ignore the displayed number as proof. Use Verified financial calls only when your Android version, bank app, sign-in and bank participation satisfy the requirements; otherwise call back through an official number.
What not to do
- Do not share a verification code, password, card PIN or remote-access permission to prove that a call or message is legitimate.
- Do not assume that a “Not spam” correction creates a permanent trust relationship with every caller using that number.
- Do not report a message as spam merely to hide it; reporting also blocks the sender.
- Do not install a Play Protect-blocked package from a second download site as a test.
- Do not disable all spam detection or Play Protect when one item is inconvenient. Correct the individual decision or use the official appeal process.
When Android’s controls differ from your screen
Phone manufacturers, Android versions, languages and regions can change menu names and feature availability. Scam Detection is explicitly limited to selected devices, countries and languages, while Verified financial calls requires Android 11 or later and a participating bank. If a documented option is missing, update the relevant Google app through its normal official channel, check the device’s language and region eligibility, and use the independent verification methods above. Do not treat a missing menu as evidence that a call, message or app is safe.
