An unlocked phone can still fail to connect because unlocking only removes a carrier restriction; it does not guarantee that another carrier supports the exact phone, accepts its IMEI, or has activated its SIM and line. Start with the new carrier’s official compatibility checker and support team before buying a SIM or resetting the phone.
Why won’t my unlocked phone connect to my carrier?
“Unlocked” describes whether the phone is allowed to use another carrier’s SIM. It does not mean the phone works on every network. Google says a phone must be SIM-unlocked to use a different carrier, and cautions that not every Pixel 4a (5G) or later works on every 5G network. Google’s Pixel guidance explains the distinction.

The target carrier must also support the precise model and variant, accept its IMEI, support the SIM type you are activating, and activate the line. Older phones may lack network capabilities such as LTE or VoLTE/HD Voice/Enhanced Calling that the carrier requires. Compatibility and voice requirements are carrier-specific; a general list of bands is not a substitute for checking your exact device with that carrier.

Write down the phone’s full model name or number, the carrier you are trying to join, whether you are using a physical SIM or eSIM, and the exact error. “SIM not supported,” “No service,” “Emergency calls only,” and an eSIM activation error can point to different parts of the process. Do not post your full IMEI publicly; enter it only in the carrier’s official checker or provide it through an official support channel.

Check these causes in order
-
Confirm the phone is actually unlocked
On an iPhone, check Settings for the Carrier Lock status. AT&T’s instructions say a “SIM locked” message indicates the device is locked. If you are unsure whether an unlock was approved and completed, ask the original carrier: it is the authority on the device’s unlock status and eligibility. See Apple’s instructions for checking iPhone carrier-lock status and AT&T’s device-unlock guidance.
-
Run the target carrier’s compatibility check
Use the new carrier’s official bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker with the exact model and IMEI. A result may identify a device as compatible, incompatible, blocked, or unknown. If it says unknown, recheck the number and ask the carrier to interpret the result; do not treat it as approval. For example, T-Mobile’s BYOD flow checks device eligibility and may ask for an EID when checking eSIM. T-Mobile also warns that performance and features on non-T-Mobile devices can vary.

A positive checker result is a useful first gate, not a guarantee that every feature will work or that activation has completed. If the result says blocked or incompatible, ask the target carrier what it means for your device before repeatedly attempting activation.

Verify the SIM or eSIM and line activation
Confirm that the SIM or eSIM belongs to the line you are activating and that the line is active. For eSIM, follow the carrier’s compatibility and activation process; supply the EID if requested. If the carrier cannot confirm eSIM support for your model, ask whether it supports activation with a carrier-issued physical SIM. T-Mobile’s checker may direct customers to a physical SIM when eSIM compatibility is not confirmed. Verizon’s BYOD guidance also describes physical-SIM activation when eSIM is unavailable.

Try low-risk phone-side steps
Restart the phone, install available operating-system updates, and check that the intended SIM or cellular line is enabled in the phone’s settings. These steps can resolve a temporary setup or status issue, but they cannot make an unsupported model eligible or activate a carrier account.

Ask the carrier to check activation and provisioning
If the phone passes compatibility checks but still will not register, contact the target carrier through its official support channel. Provide the model, exact error, SIM/eSIM type, and IMEI privately. Ask the representative to confirm device compatibility, any device-block status, line activation, and network provisioning. A phone can be compatible and unlocked yet lack an active or correctly provisioned line.

If the phone shows signal but calls or data fail, ask the carrier to verify the plan’s provisioning, voice-feature support, and the APN settings it requires for your exact phone. Do not guess an APN: the correct settings depend on the carrier and model.
-
Check older-phone network requirements
For an older device, ask the carrier whether the exact model variant supports its current LTE and VoLTE requirements, as well as the relevant coverage bands for your location. US Mobile highlights LTE and VoLTE/HD Voice/Enhanced Calling support for older devices, but requirements differ by carrier. A SIM that fits is not proof that the phone can provide the carrier’s current voice service. See US Mobile’s VoLTE guidance.
What common symptoms can tell you
- “SIM not supported” or “SIM locked”: Check lock status with the original carrier. The message may indicate a lock or a provisioning issue, so do not assume the new carrier can unlock the phone. AT&T uses this type of response as an unlock-status clue for prepaid physical SIMs.
- The IMEI checker says “incompatible,” “blocked,” or “unknown”: Treat this as a device-eligibility question, not proof that the phone is locked. Ask the target carrier to verify the result and explain whether the exact variant is supported or the IMEI has a block.
- eSIM activation fails, but the phone has a SIM tray: Confirm eSIM support for that phone and carrier. If it is not confirmed, ask whether the carrier can activate the line with its physical SIM.
- The phone works on Wi-Fi but has no cellular service: Wi-Fi access does not establish cellular compatibility or line activation. Continue with the carrier’s compatibility and activation checks.
What to have ready when you contact support
- The exact phone model or model number and the target carrier.
- The precise on-screen error and when it appears.
- Whether you are activating a physical SIM or eSIM, and whether the line is new or already active.
- The IMEI, shared only through the carrier’s official checker or support channel.
- For older devices, a request to verify the model’s LTE/VoLTE support and relevant network compatibility.
T-Mobile notes that it cannot test non-T-Mobile devices’ call quality, performance, data speed, or feature compatibility, and that experience may vary with settings from the original carrier. That is a useful reminder that an unlocked phone’s experience can differ by device and network, even when a checker accepts it. Read T-Mobile’s BYOD documentation.
