Turn on NFC, remove your case and any cards or metal nearby, then hold the phone’s NFC antenna over the tag for several seconds while moving slowly across the likely antenna area. Restart and update the phone and the authentication app, and test with a second NFC-capable phone or a certified external reader. If no reader detects the tag, preserve the tag ID, receipt, screenshots and photos, then use the product maker’s official authentication or support channel. A failed tap is a connectivity symptom—not, by itself, proof that the product is counterfeit.
Start with this two-minute NFC check
- Open your phone’s settings and make sure NFC is enabled. On Android, NFC is usually under Settings and Connected devices, Connections or a similarly named menu; the exact label varies by manufacturer and software version.
- Remove a thick, magnetic or metal case. Take payment cards, access cards and other NFC tags out of the case and move away from metal tables, magnets and other phones.
- Place the product tag against the phone without sliding rapidly. Try the upper back, the center and the top edge for several seconds at each position.
- Toggle NFC off and on, restart the phone, install pending operating-system and authentication-app updates, and try again.
- Use another NFC-capable phone. If possible, use a certified external reader such as the NFC Forum-listed Socket Mobile SocketScan S370 to determine whether the problem is the phone or the tag.
If the tag remains unreadable, do not discard it, scratch it or repeatedly bend the product. Photograph its location and markings, save any identifier printed or displayed by the app, and contact the manufacturer through its official authentication page, app or support channel.

Why an authenticity tag may not respond
The phone is not over its NFC antenna
NFC works at very short range. The antenna is not necessarily beneath the middle of the phone or directly behind the camera. Its position changes by model, so a perfect tap with one phone can miss completely with another. POCO’s F6 Pro guidance places the antenna near the upper frame and recommends bringing that area close to the center of the tag or reader. A Certi support guide tells iPhone users to hold the top of the iPhone over the tag for one to two seconds. TW AUDiO’s instructions tell Android users to enable NFC and enlarge the search area when the chip is not recognized immediately.

Cases, cards and metal absorb or distort the field
Thick cases increase the gap between the antenna and the tag. Magnetic closures, metal plates, wallets and cards can shield or detune the NFC field, while another NFC device can create competing responses. Samsung warns that non-genuine covers containing magnets, cards or metal may interfere with NFC communication. Xiaomi likewise identifies electromagnetic interference from nearby devices or metal objects as a cause of poor card recognition; Huawei lists physical barriers and nearby NFC cards among possible causes.

NFC or the app is stuck
A phone can show NFC as enabled while the operating system, reader service or brand app has failed to initialize correctly. Toggling NFC, rebooting and applying updates reset that software path. An outdated authentication app may also fail to hand the tag’s data to the maker’s verification service even when the phone detects the chip.
The tag uses technology the phone or app does not support
Not every NFC tag uses the same memory layout, security features or frequency of data exchange. A phone may detect a tag but be unable to interpret its record, or an app may only accept tags issued for a particular product line. A tag can also be physically damaged, deactivated after a legitimate replacement, or disabled by the maker’s backend.
The verification service is unavailable
Reading an NFC record and confirming a product are separate operations. The tag may open a URL or expose an NDEF record while the manufacturer’s server is unavailable, the token has expired, or the account lacks permission. In that case the radio link works, but the authentication result cannot be completed.

Find the right antenna position
Android phones
Start with the upper back or upper frame, then slowly widen the search area toward the center and top edge. Keep the phone parallel to the tag and hold each position for a second or two. If the phone gives a vibration or notification, stop moving and keep it still while the app processes the tag. On the POCO F6 Pro, Xiaomi’s documented antenna location is near the upper frame; bring that area close to the center of the tag.
iPhone
Hold the top of the iPhone over the tag for one to two seconds, as recommended in Certi’s support instructions. Remove the case first, particularly if it has a magnetic ring or card pocket. If nothing happens, move the top edge in a slow, small circle over the tag rather than sweeping the whole phone quickly.
When the location is unknown
Search three zones in order: the upper back, the center and the top edge. Keep the tag and phone close but do not press hard enough to damage a label or embedded inlay. Antenna placement and supported tag technology vary by model, so the procedure that works on one handset is not a universal measurement for another.

Remove every common source of interference
- Case: Test with the case completely removed, not merely opened.
- Cards: Remove bank, transit, building-access and other contactless cards from the phone wallet.
- Magnets: Move away from magnetic mounts, magnetic clasps and accessories containing a magnet.
- Metal: Lift the item and phone away from metal tables, trays, foil packaging and metal-backed cases.
- Other radios: Separate a second phone, NFC reader or contactless terminal from the test area.
- Distance and motion: Keep the antennas close and move slowly; a fast swipe can pass through the narrow read zone without coupling.
After removing an obstruction, repeat the same antenna search rather than assuming that one tap is conclusive. Interference can make a tag appear dead in one setup and respond immediately in another.
Reset the phone and authentication software
- Disable NFC in Settings, wait a few seconds, then enable it again.
- Close the maker’s authentication app and reopen it. If the app offers a sign-out or account refresh, complete that before scanning again.
- Restart the phone. This reloads the NFC service and clears a reader session left in an error state.
- Install the latest available operating-system update and update the authentication app from the phone’s official app store.
- Retry with the phone unlocked and the authentication app already open, unless the maker’s instructions specify a different workflow.
Do not factory-reset the phone merely because one tag fails. A reset erases data and does not repair a physically damaged or deactivated tag; use a second reader first.
Use a second reader to separate a phone problem from a tag problem
| Test | Result | Most likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original phone, case removed, several antenna positions | Tag responds | Position or interference issue | Note the working area and repeat without the obstruction. |
| Original phone after NFC toggle, restart and updates | No response | Phone software, antenna, compatibility or tag issue | Test a second phone. |
| Second NFC-capable phone | Tag responds | Original phone, case or software is the likely fault | Check the original model’s antenna location and supported tag technology; seek phone support if other tags also fail. |
| Second phone and a certified external reader | Neither detects the tag | Tag may be damaged, deactivated or outside the readers’ supported technology | Preserve evidence and request manufacturer verification or replacement. |
| Reader detects data but brand app gives no result | NFC link works; verification is incomplete | Unsupported record, expired token, account problem or unavailable server | Capture the tag ID and error screen and contact the maker’s official support channel. |
The NFC Forum-listed Socket Mobile SocketScan S370 is an example of a certified external reader. Use a reader that supports the tag technology used by the product; a reader that cannot interpret that technology cannot prove the tag is defective.

Does a failed scan mean the product is fake?
No. A failed scan establishes only that the phone did not complete a read in that attempt. Wrong antenna placement, a case, cards, metal, magnets, software faults, unsupported tag technology and a temporarily unavailable service can all produce the same symptom. Even a tag that worked previously can become damaged or deactivated without changing the physical product.
Authentication must come from the product maker’s verification endpoint and its decision rules, not from the mere presence or absence of an NFC response. NFC Forum security guidance explains that digital signatures can help ensure the authenticity and integrity of tag data. Stronger implementations can combine signed data with server-side analytics, HMAC or ECDSA signatures and blocklists, as described by STMicroelectronics. Those controls can detect cloned, replayed or revoked identifiers in ways a basic phone read cannot.

If the page is missing, contradictory, inaccessible or merely displays an unverified link, treat the outcome as unresolved and ask the maker to check the identifier.

What evidence to collect before contacting support
- Tag identifier: Record the ID shown by the authentication app or reader. Copy it exactly, including capitalization and hyphens.
- Screenshots: Capture the app’s error, blank result, URL or verification message, along with the phone model and operating-system version if shown.
- Receipt and serial: Keep the purchase receipt, order details and the product’s printed serial or batch number.
- Photos: Take clear, well-lit photos of the tag, its placement on the product, surrounding labels and any visible damage. Do not peel off an embedded tag just to photograph its underside.
- Test record: Note which phones or readers you tried, whether the case was removed, where the antenna responded, and the date and time of each attempt.
Use only the manufacturer’s official authentication page, app or support channel. A vendor support guide specifically asks customers to include screenshots and the tag ID when reporting a scan issue. Avoid sending the identifier to an unofficial “checker” that could retain or misuse it.
Decision guide for common situations
The phone never reacts to any NFC tag
Check that the handset actually includes NFC, enable it, remove accessories and test a known working tag or payment terminal where appropriate. If every tag fails after a restart and update, the phone’s NFC hardware or software is the likely problem. Use another phone for the product check and contact the phone maker if ordinary NFC functions also fail.
Other tags work, but this authenticity tag does not
Repeat the test with the case and cards removed and search the entire antenna area. If other tags still work but this one fails on multiple readers, ask the product maker to verify whether the tag is damaged, deactivated or issued for a different reader technology.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The tag opens a page but the app cannot authenticate it
Save the exact URL, identifier and error message. Do not assume that a reachable page means the product is genuine. The maker’s server may require an app, an account, a one-time token or a signed response. Support can determine whether the identifier is valid, already claimed, revoked or outside the product’s region.
The scan result conflicts with the packaging or seller’s information
Stop relying on the disputed item until the manufacturer resolves it. Preserve the product and transaction evidence, avoid altering the tag, and request a manual verification. A contradictory result warrants escalation even if the tag can be read consistently.
Prevent future scan failures
- Scan before installing a permanent case, mount or protective layer over the tag.
- Keep contactless cards and magnetic accessories away from the phone during authentication.
- Store the product so the tag is not sharply folded, crushed or exposed to heat and moisture outside its rated conditions.
- Keep the operating system and the maker’s authentication app current.
- Save the receipt, serial and a photo of the tag when the product is first verified, so a later failure can be compared with a known-good record.
The practical rule is simple: optimize the radio connection first, isolate the reader and tag with a second device, then let the manufacturer’s signed or server-backed verification decide authenticity. Preserve evidence whenever all readers fail or the result is inconsistent.
