What to Do When an iPhone or Mac Runs Out of Memory: Practical Fixes and Settings

First determine whether you are out of storage or RAM. On an iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to find persistent files and apps. On a Mac, use System Settings > General > Storage for disk capacity and Activity Monitor > Memory for RAM pressure. Delete or move files when storage is full; quit or change workloads when RAM pressure is high. The fixes are different, and an external drive cannot add physical RAM.

Storage and memory are different problems

“Memory” is often used as a catch-all, but Apple devices have two separate resources:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Storage is persistent space for apps, photos, videos, messages, documents, downloads, backups and the operating system. It remains occupied after an app is closed.
  • Memory (RAM) is working space for apps and macOS while they run. It is cleared and reassigned as workloads change.

A full iPhone usually means its storage is crowded. A Mac can have either a nearly full startup disk or high RAM pressure, and those conditions require different remedies. The menus and recommendations described here can vary with iOS, macOS, region and device model.

What you notice Check first Appropriate response
“iPhone Storage Almost Full” or apps cannot update Settings > General > iPhone Storage Remove, offload, optimize or move stored files
Mac cannot save files or install an update System Settings > General > Storage Delete or move disk data and empty Trash
Mac apps become sluggish while several are open Activity Monitor > Memory Read Memory Pressure, identify a heavy app and reduce the workload
Mac has free disk space but shows yellow or red pressure Activity Monitor > Memory Manage RAM use; disk cleanup alone will not solve it

Free space on an iPhone safely

1. Start with the iPhone Storage screen

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then iPhone Storage.
  3. Wait for the recommendations and ranked app list to finish calculating.
  4. Open the largest categories and decide whether to offload, delete, move or retain each item.

Apple’s screen ranks apps by the storage they use and may present recommendations. Read the consequence shown for each action before confirming. Offload App removes the app itself but keeps its documents and data. Delete App removes the app and its related data. Offloading is useful when you may reinstall the app later and want its local data preserved; deletion releases more space when that data is no longer needed. A deleted app’s data is not recoverable from the phone unless it exists in a backup or in the app’s own synchronized account.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

2. Check the categories that commonly consume space

  • Photos and videos: long recordings and high-resolution clips can occupy much more space than ordinary snapshots. Keep only the copies you need on the device, after verifying that an archive or synchronized library contains anything you plan to remove.
  • Messages: conversations can include years of photos, videos and other attachments. Review large attachments rather than deleting an entire conversation automatically.
  • Downloaded television or streaming content: offline episodes and films remain on the phone until removed in the relevant app.
  • Files: inspect downloaded documents and other local files in the Files app. Cloud-only files may not occupy the same local space as downloaded copies.
  • Unused apps: compare the app size with its documents and data. An app with little program data may not be worth removing, while a large offline game or creative app can be a significant target.

Work from the ranked list rather than deleting randomly. You can often recover substantial space by removing a few large videos, downloads or app data instead of dozens of small items.

3. Turn on automatic offloading when you accept its trade-off

For iOS to remove unused app binaries while retaining their documents and data, go to Settings > Apps > App Store and enable Offload Unused Apps. The app icon remains on the Home Screen with a cloud symbol. Tapping it downloads the app again when an internet connection is available. This setting is convenient, but a rarely used app will not open instantly if its binary has been offloaded, and redownloading requires connectivity and enough available space at that moment.

4. Use iCloud Photos without confusing cloud quota with phone capacity

If your iCloud plan has room, enable iCloud Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage in the Photos settings. Full-resolution originals stay in iCloud while the iPhone keeps smaller, device-sized copies as needed. The phone can therefore reclaim local space without losing access to the library, but the arrangement depends on iCloud capacity and an internet connection for an original that is not currently stored locally.

Apple provides 5 GB of free iCloud storage (Apple, 2026). That allowance is shared by iCloud data, so a photo library, device backups and other synchronized content can fill it. Optimization does not create unlimited space: if the iCloud quota is full, you must remove content, make room in the plan or use another archive before the library can continue uploading.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

5. Keep a minimum working margin

For iPhone and iPad slowdowns, Apple recommends maintaining at least 1 GB of free space (Apple, 2026). This is a practical floor for avoiding the most constrained conditions, not a universal percentage that guarantees a particular speed. Check the available figure after deleting or offloading items; if only a few hundred megabytes remain, continue until the phone has a meaningful margin for updates, temporary files and app work.

A reliable iPhone recovery order

  1. Open iPhone Storage and note the largest categories.
  2. Remove downloaded television, streaming and Files content that you no longer need.
  3. Review large Messages attachments and videos, preserving any copy you intend to keep.
  4. Offload infrequently used apps whose documents and data should remain, or delete apps and data you have abandoned.
  5. Enable Optimize iPhone Storage if iCloud has sufficient capacity and synchronized originals are acceptable.
  6. Recheck the storage screen and leave at least 1 GB free when possible.

Recover disk storage on a Mac

1. Open the correct storage report

On current macOS, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On older macOS releases, the equivalent report is under About This Mac > Storage. Let the categories calculate, then open their detail views. Depending on the release, you may see Applications, Documents, Messages, Podcasts, TV, Trash and System Data.

The category is a starting point, not a command to erase everything in it. System Data can include caches, logs, temporary files and other items macOS manages. Inspect user-created files first, because they are easier to identify and restore if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove data you can identify

  • Downloads: delete installers, disk images, duplicate archives and exported files that have already served their purpose.
  • Media: remove or relocate completed video projects, large recordings and downloaded Podcasts or TV content.
  • Applications: uninstall programs you no longer use, especially large creative tools and games. Keep installers or license information you still need before removing an app.
  • Old iPhone or iPad backups: check whether an older local backup is still required before deleting it.
  • Other user accounts: files in another account can consume startup-disk capacity even though they are not visible in your own Documents folder. Coordinate with the account owner before removing them.
  • Trash: empty it after reviewing its contents. Moving a file to Trash does not reclaim its disk space until Trash is emptied.

After a large deletion, allow macOS time to recalculate the Storage report. Some categories are indexed asynchronously, so the displayed total may not change immediately.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model) | External Solid State Drive, Compatible with Laptops & Tablets, Up to 2M Drop Protection, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C to USB-A Cable
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

3. Move large libraries to another disk

When the startup disk is nearly full, Apple recommends another disk or external storage for large Photos libraries, iMovie libraries, video projects and archives. A USB-C portable external SSD offers fast local access without requiring those files to remain on the internal disk. Before moving a library, quit the app, copy the complete library to the destination, open it from the new location and verify that projects and media work. Keep a separate backup; one external disk is not a backup by itself.

External storage requires a suitable cable, enough capacity, compatible formatting and physical care. Do not disconnect it while a library is open or a file is being copied. If you travel with the drive, protect it from impact and keep another copy of irreplaceable work.

4. Apply macOS storage recommendations deliberately

The Storage pane may offer Store in iCloud, Optimize Storage and Empty Trash Automatically. Read the explanation beside each option before enabling it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Store in iCloud can keep selected files available on demand while using iCloud capacity.
  • Optimize Storage can remove watched or otherwise recoverable local content when space is needed, while retaining access to the content through the relevant service.
  • Empty Trash Automatically removes items after macOS’s stated period, reducing the chance that forgotten Trash continues to consume space.

Cloud optimization is not the same as a second local backup. It uses cloud quota, depends on account access and connectivity, and may require a download before an optimized file can be opened at full local availability.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

5. Use Safe Mode only as a temporary space measure

Safe Mode can clear certain system caches and may create enough temporary room for a task such as a macOS update. Use it as a recovery step when ordinary cleanup is not enough, then restart normally afterward. Safe Mode is not a substitute for deleting or moving persistent personal data, and it does not increase the physical capacity of the startup disk.

Find out whether a Mac is short of RAM

Read Activity Monitor’s Memory tab

Open Activity Monitor and select Memory. The key fields are:

  • Memory Pressure: Apple’s overall indicator, calculated from free memory, swap rate, wired memory and file-cached memory.
  • Memory Used: the amount currently assigned across the system.
  • App Memory: RAM used by applications and their processes.
  • Compressed: data compressed in RAM to delay writing it to disk.
  • Cached Files: memory holding data that can be reclaimed when another process needs it.
  • Swap Used: data written to the startup disk because RAM is under pressure.
Pressure color Meaning What to do
Green RAM is being used efficiently. Do not close apps merely because Memory Used is high; cached memory can be reclaimed.
Yellow More RAM may eventually be needed for the current workload. Find unusually heavy apps and reduce simultaneous work before the condition worsens.
Red The Mac needs more RAM for the workload. Quit a memory-heavy app, save work, reduce concurrent tasks and reassess pressure.

Apple’s guidance is explicit: When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve. A large Memory Used number alone is therefore not proof of a problem. Pressure, swap activity and the behavior of the Mac are more useful than trying to keep RAM visibly empty.

Reduce pressure without deleting personal files

  1. In Activity Monitor, sort processes by memory and identify an app consuming an unusually large amount.
  2. Save work in that app, quit it normally and wait briefly for Memory Pressure to update.
  3. Close browser windows, virtual machines, video editors or other concurrent workloads you do not need right now.
  4. Reopen only the programs required for the task and check Memory Pressure again.
  5. If one app repeatedly grows until the Mac slows, update it when an update is available or use a less demanding alternative; preserve unsaved work before force-quitting.

A portable SSD can provide more disk capacity and more room for swap activity, but it does not add physical RAM. Moving a video library off the startup disk solves a capacity problem; it does not turn a red Memory Pressure reading green by itself.

Check whether RAM can be upgraded

On Macs that support user-upgradeable memory, Apple says the Memory Slots pane in System Information shows whether an upgrade is possible. Many modern Macs have memory integrated into the system and provide no slot-based upgrade path. Confirm the exact model’s information before buying parts or opening a computer. If the memory is not upgradeable, the practical choices are reducing concurrent workloads, replacing a persistently heavy app or selecting a different Mac for future workloads.

Choose the least disruptive fix

Option Best for Benefits Trade-offs
Delete files or apps Data you no longer need Free and immediate space recovery Irreversible if no backup or synchronized copy exists
Offload an iPhone app Unused apps whose documents and data should remain Removes the app binary while preserving its local data Reinstallation needs connectivity and available space
Cloud optimization Photos and files that can remain available on demand Convenient synchronization and less local storage use Uses cloud quota and depends on account access and connectivity
External SSD Large Mac libraries, projects and archives Fast local access and a one-time hardware purchase Requires cable, suitable formatting, backup, ongoing connection and physical care
Quit or replace a heavy app Yellow or red Mac Memory Pressure Can reduce RAM demand without deleting files May interrupt a workflow; another app may be needed for the same task
Add RAM where supported Upgradeable Mac with recurring RAM pressure Increases physical working memory Only possible on models with upgradeable memory and requires model-specific parts and installation

Troubleshooting common outcomes

The iPhone still says storage is full after deleting items

Return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and wait for the calculation to refresh. Confirm that you deleted large local items rather than only removing a view or an app shortcut. If Photos, Messages or a streaming app still ranks highly, inspect its attachments or downloads. Check the Recently Deleted areas in the relevant apps and remove items there when you are certain they are no longer needed. If iCloud Photos is enabled, verify that originals have synchronized before relying on deletion or optimization.

iCloud Photos does not free local space immediately

Optimization keeps smaller copies as needed; it does not convert every photo into an instant placeholder. The iPhone needs time, power and connectivity to synchronize and reclaim space. Confirm that the iCloud account has available capacity, then leave the phone connected long enough for the library to process. If the quota is full, optimization cannot upload additional originals until you make room or change the storage arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Mac’s Storage chart is large but no single folder explains it

Open the category details and review Applications, Documents, Messages, Podcasts, TV and Trash before touching System Data. Remove identifiable downloads, old backups and media first. Empty Trash, then allow macOS to recalculate. If the startup disk remains critically full, move a verified Photos or video library to another disk and use Safe Mode only when temporary cache clearance is needed for an immediate task.

The Mac is slow even though disk storage is available

Check Activity Monitor rather than deleting more files. If Memory Pressure is yellow or red, sort by memory, quit the unusually heavy process and reduce simultaneous workloads. Watch Swap Used and pressure after the change. An external SSD may help when swap is constrained by a nearly full startup disk, but persistent red pressure points to workload or RAM limits, not a need for more photo deletion.

Prevent the next shortage

  • Review iPhone Storage periodically instead of waiting for an installation or recording to fail.
  • Remove offline streaming downloads and completed transfers after use.
  • Keep important photos, projects and documents in a verified second copy before deleting local originals.
  • On a Mac, inspect Downloads, old device backups and Trash as part of a routine cleanup.
  • Keep large active projects on a properly backed-up external SSD when internal capacity is limited.
  • When a Mac workload repeatedly drives Memory Pressure to red, plan around fewer simultaneous apps or verify whether the model supports a RAM upgrade.

There is no Apple-published universal “safe free-space percentage” that applies to every iPhone or Mac. Use the device’s storage report, the iPhone’s 1 GB slowdown guidance and the Mac’s Memory Pressure indicator as the relevant signals for your model and workload.
