Start with the phone’s exact model and regional variant, then check the intended US carrier’s IMEI eligibility result, unlock status, supported frequency bands, network technologies and VoLTE support. “Unlocked” only removes a carrier lock; it does not make a handset compatible with every US network. A phone can show LTE or 5G data yet fail voice registration, and a new SIM or APN cannot add missing radio bands or an unsupported voice implementation.
Work through the checks below in order. They separate a hardware or software mismatch from an outage, activation problem, account issue or weak local coverage.

First, define exactly what is failing
Write down the make, complete model number (including letters, region code and dual-SIM variant), software version, current carrier and the places where the problem occurs. Record what appears in the status bar: 5G, LTE, 4G, emergency calls only or no service. Also note whether mobile data works, whether every call fails or only incoming or outgoing calls fail, and whether calls drop in one building, on a particular route or everywhere.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Observed symptom | Most useful first interpretation |
|---|---|
| No service or emergency-only everywhere | Check unlock status, IMEI eligibility, supported bands and carrier registration before changing APN settings. |
| Data works, but calls fail or drop | Investigate VoLTE/HD Voice support, voice provisioning and the exact model variant. |
| Calls work outdoors but fail in one building or venue | Test local coverage, indoor attenuation, congestion and Wi-Fi Calling settings. |
| Calls fail only during activation or number transfer | Verify account state, SIM/eSIM activation and transfer completion with the carrier. |
Check that the phone is unlocked and eligible
Confirm the lock status
Ask the original carrier or seller whether the handset is network-unlocked. For an imported phone, the original carrier—not the US carrier—may need to provide an unlock code or complete the unlock. T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance says an imported device must be unlocked and directs customers to the original carrier when an unlock code is required: T-Mobile BYOD guide.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Do not treat an “unlocked” label in a listing as proof of US compatibility. Unlocking and technical compatibility are separate checks.
Run the exact IMEI or device-ID check
Use the IMEI (or device ID where requested) from the phone you will actually use. Find it by dialing *#06# or in the device’s About screen. Enter the complete number into the intended carrier’s current eligibility tool, and repeat the check for each carrier you are considering. A similar model name, a different storage size or another regional variant can have different radios.
| Carrier | What its guidance requires | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile | Unlocked device and a pass from its IMEI compatibility checker. | Exact model support, VoLTE and Extended Range LTE capability. BYOD requirements |
| Verizon | Unlocked handset with compatible hardware and software; use the device-ID compatibility check. | Exact device-ID result and required voice settings. Verizon BYOD FAQs |
| AT&T | Device must use cellular technology and frequency bands supported by its network. | Its supported-device list and eligibility process, rather than a generic “GSM” or “LTE” label. AT&T device support guidance |
A rejected IMEI result is strong evidence that the carrier does not support that specific handset configuration. Contact support if the result conflicts with the manufacturer’s specifications; do not assume a SIM swap will override it.

Match the phone’s radio bands and network technologies
US networks identify service by both a frequency band and a radio technology such as 5G or 4G LTE. T-Mobile states that a device must support both the local network frequency band and the technology used there; its explanation is at T-Mobile’s network page. AT&T similarly says devices that do not use the same cellular technology and frequency bands cannot use its network services: AT&T support.
Compare the bands listed for the exact regional variant—not just the processor or product family—with the carrier’s current requirements and the locations where you need service. T-Mobile identifies LTE bands 12 and 71 as Extended Range LTE. Those bands can be important in particular coverage areas, but their presence alone does not guarantee service and every listed band is not equally necessary in every location.
- Check the manufacturer’s specification sheet for the precise model code.
- Check the carrier’s current band and technology information.
- Compare both lists with the carrier’s IMEI result; the checker reflects software and certification conditions that a raw band list may not.
- Do not infer compatibility from “5G,” “4G,” “global,” or “GSM” printed in a listing. Those labels do not identify the individual bands or carrier approvals.
Verify voice service separately from mobile data
VoLTE (Voice over LTE), sometimes shown as HD Voice or Advanced Calling, is a distinct requirement. LTE data working does not prove that voice calls can register. T-Mobile describes VoLTE as calls carried over its LTE network and advises BYOD customers to check VoLTE support. Ask the carrier to confirm that VoLTE is supported and provisioned for your exact model and software variant.

When data works but calls do not
- Open the phone’s cellular or mobile-network settings and confirm that 4G/LTE calling, VoLTE or HD Voice is enabled when the option is available.
- Ask carrier support whether voice service is provisioned on the line and whether the model/variant is approved for voice.
- Install the manufacturer’s current carrier-configuration and system updates, then restart.
- If the carrier says the model lacks a compatible voice implementation, stop troubleshooting APN settings. The limitation is structural and requires a supported handset or carrier.
Do not rely on hidden diagnostic menus or unofficial firmware modifications as a general fix. They can disable certification or leave emergency-calling behavior uncertain.

Rule out outages, activation and settings problems
Once the phone passes the unlock and eligibility checks, eliminate simpler causes before buying anything.
- Turn off Airplane Mode. Toggle it on for about 10 seconds, turn it off and wait for the network name to return.
- Restart the phone. This forces a fresh registration with the radio network.
- Check for an outage or congestion. Try the carrier’s status information and test again at a different time. A crowded venue can produce dropped calls without a handset fault.
- Confirm the account and SIM/eSIM activation. Verify that the line is active, the SIM is seated correctly (or the eSIM is installed), and there is no account suspension.
- Allow for number-transfer timing. Verizon says a transfer from another wireless carrier can take up to 72 hours before the number is active on its network. If calling fails during that window, ask for a transfer-status check rather than changing hardware. Verizon call troubleshooter
- Review calling settings. Check Wi-Fi Calling and Advanced Calling/VoLTE as applicable to the phone and carrier. Wi-Fi Calling can help indoors, but it cannot compensate for an ineligible device.
- Test another location. Make a call outdoors, near a window and in a different neighborhood. Record whether the failure follows the phone or stays tied to one place.
- Reseat or reprovision the SIM. If the carrier confirms the device is eligible, request a replacement SIM or eSIM reprovisioning. This can fix a damaged or incorrectly activated subscriber identity, but it cannot add unsupported bands.
Carrier-specific checks
T-Mobile
Use T-Mobile’s IMEI checker and confirm the phone is unlocked. Its BYOD guidance also recommends checking VoLTE and Extended Range LTE support. T-Mobile cautions that it cannot test call quality, performance, data speed or feature compatibility on non-T-Mobile devices; settings retained from the original carrier can affect the experience. The network page lists the bands and technologies used in different areas, so compare the exact handset with the local coverage need rather than assuming every band is required everywhere. T-Mobile states that its 4G LTE network supplements 5G with coverage for 99% of Americans nationwide. That is a carrier-published coverage statement, with no year stated on the page, not an independent measurement or a guarantee at your address.

AT&T
Use AT&T’s supported-device list and eligibility process for the exact model. AT&T identifies incompatible cellular technology and missing frequency bands as common reasons a phone cannot use its services. An unlocked label or generic LTE support is not enough if the regional variant lacks a required band or voice configuration.
Verizon
Verizon requires an unlocked device with compatible hardware and software and uses a device-ID check for BYOD compatibility. Its call troubleshooter lists congestion, outages, account issues, number-transfer delays, settings and local signal conditions as possible causes. Check Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi Calling and Advanced Calling/VoLTE where available, then restart and retest. If the device passes the checker but still fails, provide support with the exact model, software version, locations and timestamps of dropped calls.
How to compare carrier options for an imported phone
There is no universal best US carrier for imported handsets. Compare the following for your exact model and the places you use it:

| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Does the carrier’s current IMEI/device-ID tool accept this exact variant? | Carrier approval covers software and certification conditions that a band list may miss. |
| Radio support | Are the needed frequency bands and 4G/5G technologies present? | Missing a local band can mean no service or poor indoor/rural reach. |
| Voice | Is VoLTE/HD Voice supported and provisioned? | Data can work while calls fail if voice registration is unsupported. |
| Coverage | Does the network reach your home, workplace and regular routes? | National maps and carrier claims cannot guarantee a particular building or road. |
| Activation | Can the carrier activate the SIM/eSIM and complete a number transfer? | Account or transfer state can mimic a radio fault. |
| Software behavior | Does the carrier support the phone’s firmware and calling configuration? | Imported firmware may retain settings or features designed for another network. |
When replacing the phone is the practical solution
Consider a replacement only after the intended carrier rejects the IMEI, the manufacturer confirms a missing band or incompatible voice implementation, or repeated testing shows a hardware radio fault. Before purchase, record the replacement’s complete model and regional variant and run that exact device through the carrier’s current checker. “Unlocked 5G” by itself is not proof that a phone works on every US carrier.
A different SIM, an APN edit, a signal booster or a factory reset cannot create a missing radio band, change an unsupported modem technology or add carrier-approved VoLTE. Those measures are useful only for activation, configuration or coverage problems that have already been identified.
Quick Recap
A compact decision path
| Check result | Next action |
|---|---|
| Phone is locked | Have the original carrier or seller unlock it; then rerun the US carrier check. |
| IMEI/device ID is rejected | Ask the carrier to verify the result. If confirmed, choose a handset approved for that network. |
| IMEI passes, but a required band is absent | Use another carrier whose local requirements match, or replace the phone. |
| Data works, voice fails | Verify VoLTE support and provisioning for the exact variant. |
| All compatibility checks pass, failure is location-specific | Investigate coverage, indoor signal, congestion and Wi-Fi Calling. |
| Failure began during activation or transfer | Have the carrier check the account, SIM/eSIM and transfer status. |
