What to do when an F&O trade moves against you: exit, hedge or roll over

When an Indian futures-and-options (F&O) position moves against you, do not choose an action merely to get back to your entry price. First establish whether the original trade thesis still holds, how much additional loss the position can create, and whether you can meet the next margin or settlement payment. If the thesis is invalid or the remaining risk is outside your limit, exiting or reducing is usually the cleanest control. Hedging is appropriate only for a defined exposure with a known cost. Rolling is justified only when the same thesis remains valid for a later expiry and the new position is acceptable on its own.

There is no universal winner among exit, hedge and rollover. The right decision depends on direction, contract size, expiry, liquidity, margin resources, transaction costs and the specific risk you intend to keep.

Start with the risk that remains, not the loss already shown

A loss on the screen is a historical result. Closing the position realizes it, but continuing does not erase it; it adds a new bet from the current market price. Ask: If I had no position right now, would I open this exact trade at today’s price, size and expiry? If the answer is no, holding solely because the position is down is anchoring, not risk management.

Write down the instrument (index future, stock future, call or put), underlying, long or short direction, quantity, expiry and average entry price. Then state the original reason for entry and the observable condition that would prove it wrong. A technical level, event, volatility assumption or time-based condition should be specific enough that another person could check it.

Leverage makes this decision urgent. SEBI Investor warns that a derivatives trader can lose part or all of the margin quickly and that losses may exceed the original margin. Its guidance says, "If the investor is speculating and gets the decision wrong, derivatives have the potential to wipe out one’s net worth." The same page reports that 9 out of 10 individual traders in equity F&O incurred net losses in FY 2018-19 and FY 2021-22; those are the stated fiscal periods, not a FY 2026 result.

What happens mechanically when a position moves against you

Futures: daily mark-to-market cash flow

For NSE equity futures, positions are marked to the daily settlement price at the end of each trading day. The losing side pays the settlement loss through the clearing system, so an adverse move can require cash before the contract expires. A position that is profitable on paper at expiry can still create an interim funding problem if daily losses exhaust available funds.

Options: premium, time and volatility interact

A long option can lose value even when the underlying has not moved much because time to expiry shrinks or implied volatility falls. A short option collects premium initially but remains exposed to an adverse underlying move and potentially large losses; margin can rise as risk increases. Evaluate the option’s current value, days remaining, volatility sensitivity and worst plausible underlying move rather than comparing only the premium with your entry premium.

Margin is a live obligation

NSE uses upfront initial margin and portfolio-based SPAN margining for its derivatives. The exchange margin page is live and requirements can change; your broker may also apply additional exposure, concentration or intraday rules. Check the amount currently blocked, the funds available for another settlement debit and the broker’s square-off policy before deciding to keep a position.

Option 1: Exit or reduce the position

Exiting means offsetting the full position. Reducing means closing part of it so that the remaining exposure fits your risk limit. Both remove risk instead of adding another uncertain leg.

When exit or reduction is the rational choice

  • The condition that invalidates the original thesis has occurred.
  • The plausible additional loss exceeds your predetermined rupee or percentage limit.
  • You cannot reliably fund futures mark-to-market or an increase in option margin.
  • Liquidity has deteriorated, spreads have widened or execution could become difficult.
  • An approaching expiry creates exercise, assignment or settlement consequences you do not intend to handle.

Use a marketable limit order or another execution method allowed by your broker, but do not assume a displayed last-traded price is available for your entire quantity. Compare the bid and ask, depth at several price levels and the likely slippage for the order size. In a fast market, a partial fill can leave you with directional risk; verify the final net quantity and average exit price.

What exiting does not do

Closing stops future exposure; it does not recover the amount already lost. Do not reopen immediately just because the price has moved through your old entry level. A new trade needs a fresh thesis, size and invalidation point.

Option 2: Hedge a clearly defined exposure

SEBI Investor describes hedging as using a position to offset adverse price movement. A hedge changes the shape of future outcomes; it cannot restore money already lost. Before placing one, write the exact risk being offset, the amount of underlying covered, the time period and the maximum cost you accept.

Match the hedge to direction and size

A long underlying or long futures position generally needs protection against a fall; a short position needs protection against a rise. The hedge instrument should reference the same or a demonstrably related underlying and cover a stated quantity. A different expiry, strike or underlying creates basis risk: the hedge can move less, more or in the opposite direction from the position it is meant to protect.

Protective options have a price

Buying a put against a long exposure can limit downside below the chosen strike, but the premium is an immediate cost. If the underlying rallies, that premium can reduce or eliminate the net gain. Time decay can reduce the option’s value while protection is held, and an option that is too far out of the money may provide little help before a severe move. A call can serve the analogous purpose for a short exposure, subject to the same premium and decay trade-offs.

Do not confuse a hedge with adding risk

Adding another futures contract in the opposite direction may reduce net delta, but it also introduces a second position, more execution costs and potentially new margin requirements. Complex spreads or multiple option legs can have nonlinear risk, difficult exits and expiry interactions. If you cannot state the hedge ratio, maximum loss, liquidity and exit rule, reducing the original position is more transparent.

Option 3: Roll to a later expiry

Rolling normally means closing or offsetting the near-expiry contract and opening a position with a later expiry. It extends exposure; it does not repair a thesis that has failed. Treat the later contract as a new trade and ask whether you would enter it today without owning the expiring position.

Calculate the true rollover decision

  • Compare the later contract’s price with the near contract and identify whether the curve is in contango or backwardation.
  • Estimate brokerage, exchange charges, taxes, bid-ask spread and expected slippage for both closing and reopening.
  • Check open interest, traded volume and depth in the later expiry rather than assuming liquidity will match the near month.
  • Recalculate margin and the cash needed for possible adverse moves.
  • Decide how much time the thesis genuinely needs and what event would invalidate it before the new expiry.

A 2026 SEBI-hosted strategy disclosure lists rollover cost as an expense for futures strategies and notes basis risk in cash-futures arbitrage. Those observations apply as risk considerations, not as a recommendation or a retail trading rule.

Exit, hedge or roll: a practical comparison

Choice Remaining downside and upside Cash and margin Expiry consequences Main costs and risks When the thesis must be valid
Exit or reduce Full exit removes directional exposure; reduction leaves risk proportional to the quantity retained. Stops future margin and settlement on the closed quantity, but any realized loss is final. No further expiry or exercise exposure on the closed quantity. Spread, slippage, brokerage and taxes; possible partial fills. It need not remain valid; the purpose is risk control.
Hedge Offsets a specified adverse move while retaining some or all original upside and downside. May require premium, additional margin or collateral for both legs. Different expiries can leave an unhedged period; option exercise and settlement rules matter. Premium decay, basis mismatch, spread, liquidity and legging risk. The exposure and hedge relationship must remain valid for the hedge horizon.
Roll over Usually preserves broadly the same directional exposure, so downside continues. New margin is assessed for the later contract; interim losses still have to be funded. Near expiry is closed and the later contract follows its own settlement and exercise rules. Rollover price difference, two sets of execution costs, spread and basis risk. The original idea must still be credible at the later expiry.

A six-step decision process

  1. Inventory the position. Record underlying, contract type, direction, quantity, expiry, strike where applicable, average entry and current net quantity. Include any offsetting positions in the same underlying.
  2. Define the invalidation condition. State what would prove the entry thesis wrong and whether that condition has already occurred. The entry price is not an invalidation rule.
  3. Stress the remaining exposure. For futures, calculate the rupee effect of several adverse price moves and include daily mark-to-market funding. For options, consider underlying movement, time decay and a volatility change. Use the contract multiplier and your actual quantity.
  4. Check funding and broker controls. Review available cash, blocked margin, maintenance or additional margin, collateral haircuts, auto-square-off terms and expiry notices. Do this before placing a hedge or roll, because a second leg can increase the cash requirement.
  5. Compare executable choices. Obtain live bid-ask depth and open interest for the position and any proposed hedge or later expiry. Price the total transaction, including premium, spread, brokerage, statutory charges and likely slippage.
  6. Choose one trigger and document it. Write the action, quantity, order condition, maximum acceptable loss and the event that would cause a further reduction or full exit. Avoid serial adjustments whose only purpose is postponing recognition of the loss.

Playbooks by instrument

Long futures

Ask whether the bullish thesis still holds and whether you can fund another adverse mark-to-market debit. If not, reduce or exit. A protective put can cap downside but costs premium and must be sized to the futures exposure. Rolling a long future is sensible only if the later expiry has adequate liquidity and a fresh, time-specific bullish thesis.

Short futures

Reverse the direction of the stress test: estimate losses from a rise and the cash required for daily settlement. A call hedge may limit an extreme rally, but its premium and strike determine how much protection you actually receive. Do not roll a short merely because the near contract is losing; reassess the later expiry independently.

Long call or put

Your maximum loss is generally the premium paid, but the position can decay to little or no value. Decide whether the expected move can occur before expiry and whether implied volatility still supports the price. Selling, reducing or closing can preserve residual value; rolling to a later option requires comparing the new premium, strike, liquidity and time decay rather than transferring the old loss mentally.

Short call or put

Monitor margin and tail risk first. A short option can become more expensive to close as the underlying moves adversely, and margin can rise at the same time. A defined-risk debit spread or an offsetting option may cap further loss, but calculate both legs’ liquidity and expiry behavior. If the risk cannot be funded, close or reduce instead of waiting for a hoped-for reversal.

Expiry, exercise and settlement checks

The NSE settlement information available for equity derivatives describes cash final settlement, daily option premium settlement and automatic exercise at expiry for in-the-money index and individual-security options under its European-style mechanism. Product specifications and broker procedures can change, so verify the exact underlying, contract and current notice before expiry. Do not leave an in-the-money option open assuming it will simply disappear or that an exercise outcome has no cash or tax consequence.

For a roll, complete the near-expiry close and later-expiry open as two separate executions unless your broker offers a reliable spread order. Confirm that the first leg filled before assuming the position is transferred. During a fast market, one leg can fill while the other remains open, temporarily increasing risk.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Waiting for breakeven: Replace the entry-price target with a current-value decision: would you buy this position now?
  • Doubling quantity to recover: Recalculate stress losses at the larger size; recovery is not a risk limit.
  • Hedging without a ratio: Specify underlying units, hedge delta or notional, expiry and the loss the hedge is designed to offset.
  • Rolling automatically: Compare the later contract’s liquidity, price, costs and thesis as if it were a new trade.
  • Ignoring cash timing: Futures losses are settled daily; an account can face a funding shortfall before the market has a chance to reverse.
  • Using a thin contract: A theoretical hedge is not useful if you cannot exit near a reasonable price. Check depth and likely slippage.
  • Making many small adjustments: Keep a decision log with the reason and trigger for every change; repeated discretionary edits often hide a failed thesis.

A simple position-risk worksheet

Before acting, put these fields in a spreadsheet or written log:

  • Current net quantity and contract multiplier.
  • Rupee profit or loss at several adverse underlying prices.
  • Cash available after existing margin is blocked.
  • Estimated premium, spread, brokerage, taxes and other charges for each candidate action.
  • Expiry date, exercise or settlement treatment and the date by which the position must be closed.
  • Invalidation condition and the exact order or quantity that will be used when it occurs.

Use the worksheet to compare outcomes from the current market price, not from the original entry. If the position fails the cash or loss-limit test under a plausible adverse move, the decision is a risk-capacity problem, not a forecasting contest.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

SEBI Investor says derivatives are primarily used for hedging and minimizing price risk, but it also emphasizes that speculation can produce losses beyond the initial margin. The available exchange guidance supports the mechanics of margin, settlement and expiry; it does not establish that one response is best for every losing trade. No published comparison proves that exiting, hedging or rolling produces a superior result independent of position details.

Apply the decision framework to the exact contract and your own funding capacity. When the thesis is broken, the remaining loss is intolerable or obligations cannot be met, closing or reducing is a complete decision—not a failure to find a cleverer adjustment.
