Stop before using the response. Mark the exact sentence, calculation, definition, or reasoning step that seems wrong; ask the tutor to explain or check that point; verify it against your class materials or an independent authoritative source; and involve a teacher, parent, or other trusted adult when the disagreement remains or the work matters. Then write the explanation yourself in words you understand.
An AI tutor can produce a fluent, confident answer without having reached a sound conclusion. Treat every response as a draft to evaluate, not as proof.

Why a confident AI answer can still be wrong
Language models generate likely text, not guaranteed facts. A response may contain one incorrect sign in an equation, a definition that omits an exception, a citation that does not support the claim, or a plausible explanation attached to the wrong question. Smooth wording can hide the precise point where the reasoning failed.

There is no established universal percentage for how often AI tutors make mistakes. Accuracy varies with the subject, question, model, prompt, and the information available to the system. A second answer from the same tutor is another generated answer, not independent confirmation.
The safest response sequence
- Pause and isolate the problem. Copy the precise sentence, number, formula, definition, or inference that looks suspect. Do not discard the entire exchange if only one step is questionable.
- Ask a focused follow-up. Request a simpler explanation, the rule behind the step, or a line-by-line recalculation. A narrow question makes it easier to see whether the tutor can account for its reasoning.
- Verify outside the tutor. Compare the disputed point with the assigned notes, textbook, teacher-provided material, or an authoritative reference for that subject.
- Escalate uncertainty. If sources disagree, the explanation still makes no sense, or the answer affects important work, show the exact exchange to a teacher, parent, or trusted adult and follow your course’s AI rules.
- Rebuild the answer yourself. Write the final explanation in your own words and make sure you can explain why each step follows. Never submit text you cannot understand.
How to ask the tutor a question that exposes the weak point
Ask for the rule, not just a new conclusion
Use prompts that require a visible justification: “What rule supports this step?” or “Which definition are you using, and what are its limits?” For a science claim, ask what observation would support it and what result would contradict it. For history, ask which primary or scholarly source supports the date or interpretation.
Request a checkable calculation
For mathematics, say: “Recalculate this and show every intermediate step. Substitute the result back into the original equation.” For statistics, ask the tutor to identify the sample, formula, units, and assumptions. For programming, request a minimal example, expected output, and an explanation of why the proposed change fixes the error.
Make confusing language concrete
Ask for a definition followed by a small example and a counterexample: “Explain this in simpler language, then show one case where it applies and one where it does not.” If the answer uses an unexplained acronym, metaphor, or advanced term, ask it to define that term before continuing.

Use follow-ups as clarification, not proof
Students in a 2026 classroom study who received AI-literacy instruction were more likely to reformulate prompts, ask follow-up questions, and judge responses accurately. That supports better interaction habits, but a revised response from the same system still needs an outside check.
How to verify an answer independently
Start with the material your course will grade
Class notes, the assigned textbook, a teacher’s handout, or a posted rubric usually defines the method and terminology expected in the assignment. A technically defensible alternative can still be marked wrong if it ignores the course’s stated conventions, rounding rules, citation style, or required steps.
Choose an authoritative source for the subject
For a disputed fact, prefer a government, university, professional society, museum, library, standards body, or other recognized authority. Check the publication date when the topic changes quickly. Read the surrounding passage rather than relying on a search-result snippet.

Check independence
Two pages that repeat the same AI-generated wording are not two independent confirmations. Look for a source with its own evidence, method, references, or editorial responsibility. Compare the exact proposition, not merely whether both sources reach a similar broad conclusion.

Record what you found
Keep the original AI exchange, the disputed claim, the source you consulted, and the reason you accepted or rejected the step. This makes a conversation with your teacher faster and prevents you from losing track of which version changed.
What to do when sources disagree
- Write each source’s claim in a single sentence and identify the exact difference.
- Check whether they use different definitions, units, dates, geographic scopes, editions, or assumptions.
- Look for the source’s evidence and authority in that subject, rather than counting how many pages repeat it.
- Ask your teacher which convention applies to the assignment and show the conflicting passages.
Do not hide the disagreement by choosing the answer that sounds most certain. State the qualification in your notes until a qualified human resolves it.
When a human should take over
Ask a teacher, parent, school librarian, counselor, or another trusted adult when the answer remains unclear after checking, when your sources conflict, or when the result could affect a grade, safety, health, finances, legal rights, or another high-stakes decision. Bring the exact prompt and response, not a paraphrase. A human can see the assignment context, explain the course’s expected method, and recognize when the question itself needs to be reframed.

The U.S. Department of Education’s July 22, 2025 guidance emphasizes AI literacy and engagement with parents and other stakeholders. UNESCO’s Guidance for generative AI in education and research, published September 7, 2023 and updated January 16, 2026, likewise frames educational AI as human-centered, safe, equitable, and age-appropriate. Those principles support escalation when a student cannot independently establish that an answer is sound.

Privacy and age rules matter too
Do not paste a classmate’s name, address, medical information, passwords, private messages, identifiable school records, or unpublished personal work into a tutor unless the service and school explicitly permit it and you understand the privacy terms. Remove names and other identifying details from examples whenever possible.
There is no single age threshold that applies to every AI service or jurisdiction. Check the school’s policy, the service’s terms, and any consent requirements before allowing a child to use an AI tutor independently. UNESCO specifically identifies data privacy and age-appropriate access as education-policy concerns.

Mathematics
Suppose a tutor solves 2(x - 3) = 10 as x = 2. Mark the arithmetic step, ask for distribution and isolation shown line by line, then substitute the proposed value into the original equation. The substitution immediately reveals whether the result satisfies the equation.
Science
If a tutor says that correlation proves causation, ask it to define both terms and provide a counterexample. Compare the claim with your course text and ask your teacher what evidence would be required to support a causal conclusion.
Best Value
History and civics
When a date, quotation, or attribution looks suspicious, ask for the primary or scholarly source and check the passage in a library or institutional collection. Distinguish a documented event from the tutor’s interpretation of its significance.
Writing and languages
If feedback says a sentence is “wrong,” ask which grammar rule or rubric criterion it violates and request an improved version that preserves your meaning. Check the rule against the course’s style guide; regional usage and teacher preferences can differ.
Computer science
Ask for a minimal reproducible example and the expected output. Run code only in an environment where doing so is safe, and never execute commands you do not understand. Compare the explanation with official documentation for the language or library version used in class.

A 2026 paper by O. Clerc and coauthors studied 116 students in grades 8–9, ages 13–15, at one French middle school. Classes, rather than individual students, were assigned in a quasi-experimental design. Students completed six science-investigation tasks with an AI system; the intervention group attended a two-hour AI-literacy workshop two days before the task session.
| Measure | Workshop group | Control group | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean final task score | 11.38/20 | 10.29/20 | A modest short-term difference during tasks completed with AI access |
| Interaction behavior | Stronger interaction regulation reported | Lower than the workshop group | Students more often reformulated prompts, used follow-ups, and evaluated responses |
| Follow-up period | Assessment occurred two days after the workshop | It does not measure durable learning gains | |
The study is useful evidence that explicit AI-literacy teaching can improve how students question and regulate an AI interaction. Its one-school setting, class-level assignment, science-only tasks, and short follow-up limit broad conclusions. It does not establish a general tutor error rate or prove that a workshop improves long-term learning for every student.
The U.S. Department of Education’s August 20, 2026 education-technology release offers a useful test for any instructional tool: “What evidence demonstrates that it improves student learning?” For a student, that question translates into checking whether the tool helps you understand and solve the task, not merely whether it produces an answer quickly.
A practical checklist before you rely on a response
- Can you point to the exact claim or step you checked?
- Can the tutor state the rule, evidence, assumptions, or calculation behind it?
- Does assigned course material support the same method and terminology?
- Did an independent authoritative source confirm the disputed point?
- Have you removed personal or sensitive information?
- Can you explain the final answer without copying the tutor’s wording?
- Have you shown the exchange to a human when uncertainty or stakes remain?
If any answer is no, treat the response as unresolved and continue checking rather than submitting it.
