Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If the endpoint has already disappeared, restore the critical path on the provider’s recommended replacement, then complete regression testing. Dates and notice periods differ by provider and hosting platform, so never act on a date copied from a different service.
Start by identifying exactly what changed
“The model changed” can describe several different events: a provider may alter a default alias, mark a model deprecated, announce a future retirement, or disable an endpoint immediately for a safety or compliance reason. Your response depends on which event occurred.

Deprecation is not the same as shutdown
OpenAI defines deprecation as the period beginning when retirement is announced and ending on a stated shutdown date. At shutdown, “the model or endpoint will no longer be accessible.” Anthropic uses separate lifecycle states: deprecated models continue to work but are no longer recommended, while retired models reject calls. Treat a deprecation notice as a migration deadline, not as proof that requests are failing today.
Check the exact product surface
Locate the notice for the surface your software actually calls:

- the provider’s direct API;
- a managed service such as a cloud AI platform;
- a model hosted through a partner marketplace;
- an SDK default or alias; or
- a consumer application’s model picker.
A date for one surface does not automatically apply to another. Anthropic states that its lifecycle dates apply to Anthropic-operated platforms; Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud publish their own schedules. Google Cloud maintains a separate lifecycle table from the Gemini API documentation. Confirm the model ID, region, account, and hosting platform before changing code.
Record the deadline and its confidence
Write down whether the date is a fixed shutdown, an earliest possible date, or a date that will be confirmed later. Google’s Gemini API documentation labels listed dates as the earliest possible shutdown dates and says users will receive an exact date with advance notice. Keep the notice URL and the date in your change record so an owner can re-check them immediately before release.
How much notice should you expect?
Provider policies are useful planning signals, not guarantees. The following figures are policy statements, and exceptions can shorten the window.

| Provider or platform | Published notice guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI API | At least six months for generally available models; at least three months for specialized variants. | Preview models may receive much shorter notice, such as two weeks. Safety or compliance concerns can require faster retirement. |
| Anthropic Claude platforms | At least 60 days before retirement of publicly released models. | The policy applies to Anthropic-operated platforms. Partner clouds set their own schedules. |
| Gemini API | Published shutdown entries are earliest possible dates; an exact date is communicated later. | Recheck the live page before relying on a dated example. |
| Google Cloud Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform | Short-term models receive at least 45 days to migrate after a retirement date is scheduled. | This schedule is for Google Cloud’s platform and may not apply to the Gemini API or another host. |
Build an inventory of every caller
Do not rely on memory or the current source checkout. Older deployments, scheduled jobs and internal tools often keep using a model after the main application has moved on.
- Search configuration: inspect environment variables, secret stores, configuration files, infrastructure-as-code, deployment manifests and SDK initialization for the exact model ID or alias.
- Search execution paths: include web requests, background workers, queues, cron jobs, notebooks, evaluation scripts, test environments and customer-specific integrations.
- Inspect logs and telemetry: filter API request logs, traces, billing records and error reports by model name. Look for callers that are running from an older image or a different repository.
- Use provider exports: Anthropic’s console can export usage broken down by API key and model. This can reveal deployed callers that are absent from the checkout you are examining.
- Assign ownership: record the team or individual responsible for each caller, its traffic volume, data sensitivity, business criticality and release path.
- Map the deadline: attach the relevant notice, platform, region and shutdown date to every inventory entry. One application may call multiple providers or model versions with different deadlines.
Keep the inventory as an operational record rather than a one-time spreadsheet. A model ID, provider, host, owner and lifecycle status should be visible to the people who approve production changes.
Choose a replacement that exists on your platform
Begin with the provider’s recommended successor, but verify that it is available where your workload runs. A replacement shown in a direct API notice may not yet be enabled in a partner cloud, a particular region or your account tier.

Compare the dimensions that affect your workload
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Task quality | Does it produce acceptable answers, classifications, summaries, code or extraction on your real examples? |
| Critical features | Do tool calls, structured outputs, streaming, multimodal inputs, safety controls and refusal behavior still work? |
| API compatibility | Are request fields, response schemas, token limits, authentication, SDK versions and error codes unchanged? |
| Latency and capacity | Does the replacement meet your timeout, concurrency, regional and rate-limit requirements? |
| Cost | How will input, output, cached or batch usage affect the workload’s budget under the new model’s pricing? |
| Operations | Can your monitoring, safety review, data-retention rules and incident procedures support the new model? |
These checks prevent a technically successful model-ID edit from creating a production regression. If several candidates pass, prefer the one with a documented support horizon and a migration path that your team can maintain.
Test before moving production traffic
Run the current and candidate models side by side whenever the old endpoint remains available. A small, representative evaluation set is more useful than a generic benchmark that does not reflect your application.
- Collect representative inputs: sample normal, difficult, long, multilingual and malformed requests. Include examples from each important customer or workflow class, subject to your privacy rules.
- Include the full integration: test system prompts, conversation history, retrieval context, tool schemas, function calls, structured-output parsing, streaming and retries—not just the text prompt.
- Exercise failure paths: deliberately test timeouts, rate limits, refusals, invalid tool arguments, truncated output, content filters and provider error responses.
- Define acceptance checks: specify which fields must be present, which actions must never occur, allowable latency and the human-review conditions for high-impact results. Neither Anthropic nor Google Cloud mandates a universal score; your application owner must set the threshold.
- Run a shadow or staged test: send duplicated traffic without exposing candidate output to users, or release to an internal group first. Compare quality, safety, latency, token use and error rates.
- Document exceptions: save examples where the replacement differs. Decide whether to adjust prompts, parsing, tool definitions or business rules rather than silently accepting a behavior change.
Anthropic recommends thorough testing well before retirement. Google Cloud’s quick migration guidance specifically says to test all mission-critical features and make sure they work as expected.

Update the integration and deploy normally
Once the replacement passes your acceptance checks, make the smallest controlled change that moves the affected callers.
- Change the model ID or alias in the central configuration, not in scattered call sites where possible.
- Update SDK versions, request parameters, response parsing, tool schemas or safety settings required by the replacement.
- Refresh automated tests and pin the chosen model explicitly if an unpinned default could change again.
- Deploy through your ordinary review, staging and approval process. Google Cloud’s published sequence is to point the application to the recommended upgrade, test mission-critical features and deploy as usual.
- Monitor quality, latency, cost, refusal rates, tool-call success and provider errors after release. Keep a rollback target only if the old endpoint is still supported; do not roll back to a model past its shutdown date.
- Close the migration record only after every inventory entry has a new model, an owner and evidence of testing.
If the model has already shut down
Prioritize service restoration over a perfect comparison. Route the critical workflow to the provider’s supported replacement, apply the minimum request and parsing changes, and deploy through an emergency process with an explicit owner. Then run the broader regression suite, review affected outputs and complete the inventory so secondary callers are not discovered during the next incident.

Expect a hard failure rather than a graceful fallback: Anthropic states, “Requests to retired models will fail.” Build an application-level fallback only when you have tested it and can preserve safety, data-handling and audit requirements. A fallback that changes model behavior without observability can hide a migration problem.

Current policy examples to verify before acting
The following examples were documented on October 13, 2026, and are time-sensitive. Check the linked lifecycle page again immediately before using them for a release decision.
- OpenAI API: the deprecation policy describes minimum notice periods of six months for generally available models and three months for specialized variants, while preview models can receive much shorter notice. The policy also allows faster retirement when safety or compliance requires it.
- Anthropic: its lifecycle documentation describes active, legacy, deprecated and retired states, promises at least 60 days’ notice for publicly released model retirements, and notes that partner clouds control their own dates.
- Gemini API: the page lists
gemini-3.1-flash-litewith an earliest possible shutdown date of May 7, 2027 and recommendsgemini-3.5-flash-lite. It also says requests forgemini-3.7-flashautomatically route togemini-3.8-flash. These identifiers and dates can change. - Google Cloud: its lifecycle table lists Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash retirement on October 20, 2026, with replacement choices, and says short-term models receive at least 45 days to migrate after a retirement date is scheduled. That schedule is specific to the documented Google Cloud platform.
Consumer applications need a separate check
A model disappearing from a consumer app’s picker is not proof that an API endpoint has retired, and an API retirement does not establish which models remain in a consumer subscription. First determine whether the notice concerns the app interface, an API model ID or the entire service. Then use the applicable official help notice for account-level options, export procedures and billing remedies. Developer lifecycle documentation alone cannot establish those consumer details.
Prevent the next surprise
- Maintain an owner-managed inventory of provider, platform, model ID, region, environment, criticality and replacement status.
- Subscribe to provider email and documentation notifications, and schedule periodic reviews of lifecycle pages.
- Alert when a new model ID appears in logs, so untracked callers are added to the inventory.
- Keep prompts, tool schemas, evaluation cases and parser tests versioned with the application.
- Prefer explicit model IDs and a documented upgrade process over silently following defaults.
- For high-availability systems, consider a tested multi-provider or multi-platform routing design. Different hosts can publish different retirement schedules, but routing adds complexity in quality, privacy, cost and observability that must be evaluated like any other production dependency.
The practical rule is simple: verify the exact platform, inventory real usage, test the successor on the work that matters, and release before the endpoint becomes inaccessible. Treat every date as a platform-specific operational deadline rather than a universal promise.
