Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not treat a chatbot’s answer as a diagnosis or as permission to change treatment. First decide whether the person may be in immediate danger. For life-threatening or rapidly worsening symptoms, stop prompting the chatbot and contact your local emergency service. For a non-emergency, preserve the exact exchange, then ask the clinician who knows the person’s history, a pharmacist, or an appropriate nurse line to resolve the conflict before acting.
Why a confident chatbot answer can still be wrong
Large language models generate fluent text by predicting likely language, not by examining you, checking a medical record, or making a clinical diagnosis. The World Health Organization warned in 2023 that these systems can produce responses that appear authoritative and plausible while being completely incorrect or containing serious errors, particularly for health questions. A calm, detailed tone is therefore not evidence that the conclusion is safe.

An answer can also change when you reword the same symptom. Mayo Clinic patient guidance (2026) describes how differently worded questions can produce different answers and recommends using chatbots for general education, checking information against trusted sources, and reviewing it with the care team. Internet health searching is already common—Mayo Clinic cites nearly 8 in 10 U.S. adults looking online for health answers—but that figure is about internet use, not the accuracy or safety of chatbot advice.

First question: could this be an emergency?
If symptoms are severe, sudden, rapidly worsening, or potentially life-threatening, seek human emergency care immediately. Do not spend time asking another chatbot to arbitrate. MedlinePlus gives these U.S. examples of emergency warning signs; the list is not exhaustive:
- Severe difficulty breathing or breathing that is getting worse.
- Chest pain or pressure, especially with other concerning symptoms.
- Fainting or loss of consciousness.
- Sudden inability to speak or move.
- A severe allergic reaction.
Call your local emergency number or go to emergency care according to local guidance. If the person is unconscious, having serious trouble breathing, or otherwise in immediate danger, use emergency services rather than driving them yourself unless local professionals tell you to do so. A chatbot cannot monitor vital signs, perform an examination, or dispatch help.
When poisoning or an overdose may be involved
For a suspected medication overdose, accidental ingestion, or poisoning, act promptly even if the person feels well. MedlinePlus advises not waiting for symptoms to develop. In the United States, Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222; elsewhere, use your local poison center or emergency service. Keep the container, product name, strength, amount, and time of exposure available if you can do so safely. Do not rely on a chatbot to calculate a “safe” dose or to tell you that observation at home is enough.
Use the right human contact for a non-emergency conflict
If there are no emergency warning signs, pause before taking action based on the chatbot. Contact the prescribing clinician, primary-care team, or pharmacist. A pharmacist is an appropriate first contact for many questions about interactions, missed doses, side effects, and labels; the prescriber is needed for decisions about starting, stopping, or changing a prescribed treatment. If the usual office is unavailable, use a local nurse line or an official urgent-care pathway.

| Situation | Best next contact | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Severe, sudden, or rapidly worsening symptoms | Local emergency service or emergency department | Stop chatbot use and seek immediate help. |
| Possible overdose or poisoning | Local poison center; emergency service for serious symptoms | Call promptly; do not wait for symptoms. |
| Medication interaction, side effect, or missed dose without emergency signs | Pharmacist or prescribing clinician | Do not change the regimen until a professional advises you. |
| Conflicting interpretation of non-urgent symptoms | Clinician familiar with the person’s history or a nurse line | Provide the timeline and the exact chatbot statements. |
| Unfamiliar medical term or appointment preparation | Chatbot as a supplementary explainer, then the care team | Use it to draft questions, not to make the clinical decision. |
What to send the clinician or pharmacist
Save or copy the entire conversation before it disappears. Include the wording of the prompt, the chatbot’s answer, and any contradictory answer it gave later. A screenshot can help, but copied text preserves details that may be hard to read.
Give the professional the facts that change medical risk:
- What happened, when it began, and whether it is improving or worsening.
- The person’s age and relevant conditions, pregnancy status when applicable, and recent procedures.
- Every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, supplement, and recreational substance, including strength and usual timing.
- Known allergies and previous reactions.
- What was taken or stopped, how much, and when, if a dose is involved.
- Temperature, home test results, or other measurements, with the time measured.
Ask a direct question such as, “Is this symptom or medicine change safe for me, and what should I do next?” The professional can place the claim in the context the chatbot lacks: examination findings, verified records, local protocols, and the person’s history.
Should you follow AI advice to stop or change a medicine?
No—not solely because a chatbot recommended it. Do not start, stop, increase, decrease, combine, or substitute medication based only on chatbot output. Abruptly changing some medicines can itself be dangerous, while continuing others despite a serious reaction can be harmful. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist for individualized instructions.

If a serious reaction is happening now—such as trouble breathing, fainting, or signs of a severe allergic reaction—treat it as an emergency rather than waiting for a medication callback. If an overdose or poisoning may have occurred, use the poison-center or emergency pathway immediately. Tell the professional exactly what was taken; do not conceal a chatbot’s role or assume that a second chatbot will correct the first.
How to check whether a health claim is wrong
- Write down the precise claim. Separate “this could be caused by…” from a diagnosis, and separate a general fact from an instruction to take or stop something.
- Check the date and scope. Look for current information from a government health agency or recognized medical organization. Recommendations can depend on country, age, pregnancy, existing conditions, and medicine dose.
- Compare the wording, not just the conclusion. Identify whether the chatbot cited a source, invented a study, confused two medicines, or ignored a warning sign. A link that cannot be opened or verified is not evidence.
- Ask the responsible clinician. Share both the claim and the source you found. Ask what applies to this person, not merely whether the chatbot sounds plausible.
- Follow the professional plan. Keep a written record of the advice, follow-up timing, and symptoms that should trigger urgent help.
Agreement between two chatbots is not clinical confirmation. They may draw on the same flawed text or repeat the same unsupported assumption. Conversely, a disagreement does not prove that either answer is safe; it is a reason to obtain qualified human guidance.
Protect sensitive health information
Think carefully before entering identifying or intimate information into a general-purpose chatbot. The American Medical Association notes that privacy protections may differ from those in a physician’s practice, and WHO identifies privacy and security as concerns for health AI. Do not paste a full medical record, insurance number, government identifier, account password, or another person’s details unless you understand the service’s terms and have a legitimate reason.

For a general explanation, remove names, exact addresses, dates of birth, medical-record numbers, and photographs that reveal identity. Redaction does not make a service risk-free, and it does not turn the chatbot into a confidential clinical channel. Use the clinic’s approved portal or telephone line for protected information and urgent advice.

Safe ways to keep a chatbot in a supporting role
Use it to translate terminology
After a clinician gives you a diagnosis or test name, a chatbot may explain the vocabulary in plain language. Check that explanation against the clinician’s written instructions and ask the care team about anything that changes what you should do.
Use it to prepare an appointment
Ask for a checklist of questions, then edit it to match your situation. Useful prompts include: “What symptoms should I track?” “What information should I bring?” and “What questions should I ask about benefits, risks, and alternatives?” The clinician still makes the assessment and treatment decision.
Do not use it as an emergency triage tool
A chatbot cannot reliably exclude a heart attack, stroke, severe infection, anaphylaxis, overdose, or another time-critical problem from text alone. When a symptom could be dangerous, the cost of delay is more important than obtaining a more polished answer.
What health authorities say about these limits
WHO’s 2023 guidance calls for safeguards and evidence of benefit before routine, widespread health use of large language models. The AMA’s 2026 patient guidance says chatbot use should complement, not replace, physician guidance, and is not appropriate for emergencies. Its patient prompt resource presents learning, comparing information, and preparing for care as suitable uses. Mayo Clinic’s 2026 guidance likewise emphasizes general education, cross-checking, and review with the care team.
Best Value
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s clinical decision-support information is relevant background about oversight of certain software functions. It does not mean that every general-purpose chatbot has been FDA-cleared or evaluated for a particular person’s question. Regulatory status, where it exists, is not a personal diagnosis.
A simple decision rule
Use this sequence whenever a chatbot gives alarming or contradictory health advice:
- Emergency signs? Call local emergency services now.
- Possible overdose or poisoning? Contact the local poison center or emergency service promptly; do not wait for symptoms.
- No immediate danger? Pause medication or treatment changes and contact the relevant clinician, pharmacist, or nurse line.
- Need an explanation? Use the chatbot only to clarify terms or prepare questions, then verify the information with a qualified professional.
The practical goal is not to find the chatbot that sounds most certain. It is to get the right level of human care quickly, give that professional complete and accurate information, and use automated text only as a limited aid to understanding.
