When an AI assistant says you have reached a limit, stop retrying and identify exactly which limit was reached. Open the service’s Usage panel, note the displayed reset time, and determine whether the block affects a model, tools, a five-hour session, a weekly allowance, or the conversation’s context window. Those limits have different fixes.
Before changing providers or plans, copy your latest prompt, essential files, decisions, and the assistant’s last useful answer into a local note. Then choose among waiting, switching to an offered fallback model, moving only the minimum context to another assistant, upgrading, or buying a reset or usage credits when your account is eligible.

First, identify the limit instead of guessing
An “usage limit” message is not one universal condition. Providers can enforce several independent ceilings, and a solution for one may do nothing for another.
Model or message quota
A particular model may have a rolling or periodic message allowance. Switching to a less heavily used model can work if the product offers that option, but it does not replenish the exhausted model’s quota.

Tool quota
File uploads, image generation, voice, browsing, data analysis, coding tools, and other features can have separate allowances. You may still be able to send ordinary text messages while one tool is unavailable.
Session or weekly allowance
Some plans measure use over a five-hour session; others also enforce a weekly ceiling. A session refresh does not necessarily clear a weekly limit.
Context-window limit
A context limit concerns how much text, code, or file content can fit in one conversation. It is not the same as an account quota. Starting a new conversation, summarizing old material, or removing large attachments can solve a context error without changing your plan.

What to do in the next five minutes
- Stop repeated retries. A hard quota normally will not clear faster because you resend the same prompt. Retries can consume remaining allowance when the problem is a soft error or an expensive tool call.
- Preserve the work. Copy the last prompt, requirements, important snippets, file names, decisions, and the assistant’s most useful response into a local text or Markdown file. If the conversation contains sensitive information, save it in an access-controlled location.
- Check the account. Confirm that you are signed into the intended account and workspace, and that the displayed plan matches the subscription you paid for. Teams and personal accounts can have different limits.
- Read the reset time. Distinguish a clock-based refresh, a weekly date, a purchased reset, and an unavailable feature. Convert the provider’s displayed time to your local time, including daylight-saving changes.
- Choose the least costly route that meets the deadline. Waiting is free; a fallback model may be immediate; another assistant requires context transfer; an upgrade adds recurring cost; credits can create metered charges.
- Test with a small request. After a reset or plan change, send a short, non-sensitive prompt first. Confirm that the correct model and tools are available before pasting a large project.

ChatGPT: separate free-tier, tool, and Work/Codex limits
Free-tier messages and tools
OpenAI’s current Free Tier FAQ says free users have unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse safeguards. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools have separate limits. If you reach a Free-tier GPT limit, access to that GPT pauses until the in-product reset time. Upgrading to Plus, Pro, or Business resets the Free-tier rates when the upgrade takes effect.
That means a tool error is not evidence that all text chat is blocked. Check which feature generated the notice, wait for its displayed refresh, or continue with ordinary text if the interface allows it.
Work and Codex instant resets
For Work and Codex, OpenAI says eligible ChatGPT Plus and Pro personal accounts can buy an instant reset from desktop Usage settings or an in-app weekly-limit offer. A completed purchase immediately restores both the five-hour and weekly usage. The purchase pulls the normal weekly allowance forward: the new weekly period begins with the first request after the reset, and the next automatic reset is seven days later.
This option is not available on Free, Go, Business, Enterprise, or Edu plans, and availability varies by account. Check the purchase screen before assuming that your plan qualifies. If payment succeeds but access does not return, stay signed in and contact support with the timestamp, product surface, plan, exact error text, transaction details, and screenshots.

Claude: five-hour sessions, weekly limits, and optional credits
Why a long Claude conversation can hit the limit sooner
Anthropic describes two paid-plan limits: a session limit that resets every five hours and weekly limits that reset once a week. Consumption depends on conversation length and complexity, enabled features, selected model, and effort level. claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop share the same allowance, so moving between those surfaces does not create a fresh pool.
A long-running thread can use more allowance than a short request with the same number of visible messages. When practical, start a new conversation and carry over a concise project summary. Anthropic also recommends using projects efficiently rather than repeatedly attaching the same large material.
“Reset for free”
When Anthropic offers it, the Reset for free control is under Settings > Usage on the web or Claude Desktop. It restores either the five-hour or weekly limit immediately, cannot be undone, and is not currently exposed directly in Claude Mobile or terminal/IDE Claude Code. Once activated, the shared account allowance is restored across supported surfaces.
Usage credits for paid plans
Claude Pro, Max 5x, and Max 20x users can enable usage credits on the web. After included limits are fully used, requests switch to pay-as-you-go pricing at standard API rates and continue until the monthly spending cap is reached or the credit balance runs out. Set a conservative cap before enabling the feature, monitor the balance, and use an efficient model for routine work.

Claude’s newest paid models document a maximum context window of 1 million tokens. That is a capacity limit for one conversation, not a promise of unlimited account usage and not a change to the five-hour or weekly allowance.

Find the exact limit
Google says Gemini Apps limits are compute-based. Prompt complexity, model and feature selection, and chat length all affect consumption, so two prompts can use different amounts even when they contain a similar number of words. Limits refresh every five hours until a weekly limit is reached.
Open the Gemini web app and go to Settings > Usage Limits. The panel shows the relevant model or feature and the next refresh information. A five-hour refresh does not necessarily remove a weekly restriction.

When a subscriber reaches a limit, Google says the conversation can continue with Flash-Lite, the user can upgrade to a higher Google AI plan, or the user can wait for the model limit to refresh. Flash-Lite may be less capable for difficult reasoning, long code changes, or multimodal tasks, so verify important outputs rather than silently treating it as equivalent.
Published plan multipliers
Google’s current limits page lists these relative figures: AI Plus provides 2× standard limits; AI Pro provides 4× standard limits; and AI Ultra provides 5× or 20× AI Pro limits, depending on the subscription. These are published plan relationships, not a guarantee of a fixed number of prompts, because compute use varies by request.
How to switch providers without losing the project
- Create a transfer brief. Include the objective, constraints, current status, decisions already made, open questions, expected output format, and the smallest necessary excerpts from files.
- Remove unnecessary sensitive data. Redact credentials, personal identifiers, private customer records, and proprietary material that the next provider does not need.
- State the handoff explicitly. Tell the new assistant that the text is a project summary, identify authoritative decisions, and list what must not be changed.
- Send a small validation request. Ask it to restate the goal and constraints before requesting a large rewrite or code modification.
- Recheck settings. Review the new provider’s data-retention, training, workspace, and tool-permission settings before uploading files.
Moving assistants does not reset the original account’s quota. It is a continuity workaround, not a repair.
When an upgrade or paid reset makes sense
- Choose waiting when the reset is soon, the task is non-urgent, and the existing model or tool matters more than speed.
- Choose a fallback model when the task is routine, the provider offers an included fallback, and a lower capability level is acceptable.
- Choose another assistant when work must continue immediately and you can safely transfer a compact brief.
- Choose an upgrade when higher limits will be needed repeatedly and the recurring fee is justified by ongoing use.
- Choose a paid reset only when the account is eligible, the task is time-critical, and you understand the new reset schedule.
- Choose usage credits only after setting a spending cap and accepting standard API-rate billing for every request after included usage.
Do not buy a plan merely to solve a context-window error, a misidentified workspace, or a temporary service outage. Diagnose the failure first.

The reset time has passed but the limit remains
- Refresh the page, sign out and back in, and verify that you are in the same account and workspace.
- Check whether the notice refers to a weekly limit, a tool-specific limit, or a context limit rather than the session clock you were watching.
- Try the provider’s supported web or desktop surface if the limit display is missing on mobile or an IDE integration.
- Check the provider’s status page for an incident before making another purchase.
A payment completed but the service is still blocked
Do not repeatedly purchase the same reset. Record the receipt or transaction identifier, exact purchase time, account email, plan, product surface, error text, and screenshots. Contact the provider while signed in and ask support to verify entitlement and quota state.
A new conversation still fails
That points away from a conversation-length problem and toward an account, model, tool, weekly, or service-level restriction. Return to the Usage panel and classify the message before deleting more history.
Prevent the next surprise limit
- Keep a local project brief so a provider switch takes minutes rather than reconstructing a week of conversation.
- Start a new thread when an old one accumulates large files, repeated logs, or obsolete instructions.
- Use the smallest model and feature that can safely complete routine work; reserve high-effort modes for tasks that benefit from them.
- Track five-hour and weekly reset times in your calendar for deadline-driven projects.
- Set conservative monthly caps before enabling metered credits, then review usage after the first few requests.
- Separate sensitive files from general prompts and upload only what the current task requires.
- Recheck provider help pages before relying on plan names, prices, limits, or fallback behavior; these policies can change.
The practical rule is simple: identify the quota, preserve the work, then pay only for the speed or capacity you actually need. A displayed reset time is more reliable than repeated retries, and a carefully prepared handoff is safer than exporting an entire private conversation.
