Before buying another pair, isolate the charging path. Give AirPods or AirPods Pro at least 15 minutes on a known-working wired charger (AirPods Max need at least five minutes with their supplied cable), verify the case and earbud status, clean only as Apple directs, and use the reset procedure for the exact generation. If charging still fails, get an inspection and personalized service estimate before deciding between repair and replacement.

If your AirPods won’t charge

First identify what is actually failing: does the case refuse to gain power, is only one earbud stuck at a low percentage, or do both earbuds and the case appear dead? That distinction tells you whether to concentrate on the external power path, the case, or an individual earbud. Apple’s troubleshooting page uses the wording “If your AirPods won’t charge” and asks you to describe what is happening; use the same narrow diagnosis rather than treating every symptom as a failed battery.

What you observe What to check first
The case shows no light or battery increase Use a known-working cable, adapter and outlet, then charge the case for the required minimum time.
One earbud remains low while the other charges Confirm the case itself is powered and note whether the affected earbud is recognized in the battery display before resetting.
Both earbuds and the case appear unchanged Check the complete power path, status display, charging-port debris and model-specific reset.
Wireless charging does nothing Confirm that your particular case supports wireless charging, position its status light upward and try cable charging.

These checks are reversible and do not require opening the case. Stop if the case is swollen, hot, cracked or otherwise physically damaged; arrange service instead of continuing to charge it.

1. Give the case a known-good wired charge

For AirPods and AirPods Pro, put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, connect the appropriate Lightning or USB-C cable, and leave it charging for at least 15 minutes. This is Apple’s first step for a case or earbuds that will not charge. Use a power source you know works with another device so that a flat adapter or outlet is not mistaken for an AirPods fault. Apple’s regional troubleshooting instructions are at If your AirPods won’t charge.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

  1. Insert both earbuds into the case and close the lid.
  2. Push the cable fully into the case and connect the other end firmly to the adapter.
  3. Connect the adapter to a working outlet or other known-good power source.
  4. Leave the case connected for at least 15 minutes before judging the result.
  5. Open the lid and check whether the indicator or device battery reading has changed.

AirPods Max use a different minimum

AirPods Max do not charge in an earbud case. Apple says to charge them for at least five minutes using the supplied cable. Do not apply the 15-minute case procedure or an earbud reset sequence to AirPods Max; identify the product first and follow its own instructions.

2. Check the entire power path and wireless setup

A charging failure can occur at any link: the case connector, cable, adapter, outlet or wireless pad. Reseat each connection and, if nothing changes, substitute a cable, adapter or outlet that is already known to power another device. A case that charges by cable but not wirelessly has a different problem from a case that accepts neither type of power.

For wired charging

  • Check that the connector is fully inserted into the case and that the adapter is firmly connected.
  • Try a different known-working power source rather than repeatedly using the same outlet.
  • Use the connector type required by the case. Lightning and USB-C cases are not interchangeable in the cable choice.
  • After the 15-minute wait, check the status light and battery reading instead of relying on the cable’s appearance.

For compatible wireless cases

Wireless charging is available only with compatible case models. Place the case on the charger with the status light facing up and reposition it if the expected light does not appear. If wireless charging still fails, connect the case by cable to a power adapter. Apple’s charge guidance, including case compatibility details, is available at Charge your AirPods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy a replacement case or cable until you have identified the case generation. Connector type and wireless capability depend on the case model, and a purchase based only on the earbud name can be wrong.

3. Verify what the status display is reporting

A dark light does not prove that an earbud battery is ruined; it may simply indicate that the case itself is empty. Check the battery information on a paired device and compare it with the case indicator.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Bring the AirPods case near the iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open the lid, or remove an AirPod from the case.
  3. Inspect the AirPods battery status in the device’s Bluetooth settings.

On a Mac, use the connected AirPods battery information and the case indicator as available. The exact screen can vary with operating-system version, so use the battery value and whether it changes after charging as the useful evidence.

Indicator or reading Meaning to use for troubleshooting
Green status light Apple says the case or AirPods are fully charged, depending on what is being checked.
Amber status light Less than one full charge remains.
No light The case may need charging; confirm with a wired charge and the device battery screen.
Battery percentage rises after 15 minutes The power path is working at least partially; continue isolating whether the case or a particular earbud is lagging.

Status-light placement differs among older case designs. Use the light’s behavior and the on-device reading together rather than assuming every generation displays it in the same place. Apple documents the charge-status behavior at Charge your AirPods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Rule out optimized charging before calling it a failure

Supported AirPods can delay charging to 100 percent to reduce battery wear. A device that pauses below full may therefore be following its charging-management setting rather than refusing power. Check whether the percentage is increasing and whether the pause occurs near your usual charge level.

AirPods Pro 3 also has an optimized charge limit. Apple says that limit can be turned off when you need a full charge. These features are not universal across every AirPods generation, so do not infer that a particular model has them without checking its settings. Charge-status and optimized-charging behavior are described in Apple’s US support article at Charge your AirPods.

5. Clean debris without damaging the contacts

Lint or dust around the case port can interrupt a connector, but aggressive cleaning can cause a second fault. Apple recommends a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for removing debris from the charging port. The brush is optional; the safety limits are not.

  • Disconnect the case from power before cleaning.
  • Use only a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush and work around the opening gently.
  • Keep liquid out of the port and let the case dry if it has been exposed to moisture.
  • Do not push a tool, probe, cotton swab or other object into the charging port.

Apple’s exact warning is: “To avoid damaging the metal contacts, don’t put anything in the charging ports.” Do not use metal tools, liquid cleaners or improvised objects. If careful cleaning does not change the charging behavior, move to the reset and service steps rather than escalating the force. Apple’s cleaning instructions are at How to clean your AirPods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Reset the AirPods using the correct model procedure

A reset can resolve charging and connection problems, but it also clears custom settings that you will need to configure again. The procedure is not the same for every generation, so identify the model before pressing a button or tapping the case.

AirPods 1–3 and AirPods Pro 1–2

  1. Place both earbuds in the case, close the lid and wait 30 seconds.
  2. On the paired phone or tablet, open Bluetooth settings and forget the AirPods if they are listed.
  3. Open the case lid.
  4. Hold the case setup button for about 15 seconds.
  5. Release it when the status light flashes amber and then white.
  6. Pair the AirPods again and restore any custom settings.

AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3

These cases use a series of double taps on the front of the case timed to the status-light behavior, rather than the older rear setup-button method. Follow Apple’s complete current sequence for your exact generation; applying the older button procedure to a newer case can leave you thinking the reset failed. The model-specific reset instructions are at How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro.

If the case cannot show the required light because it has no power, return to the wired-charge step first. A reset cannot substitute for a case that is not receiving electricity.

7. Isolate the case from an individual earbud

After charging and resetting, record the result for each component. Does the case percentage rise? Does one earbud appear in the battery display while the other does not? Does the affected earbud change percentage after being left in a powered case? This simple record prevents you from replacing a complete set when the evidence points to one part.

Repair or replacement: make the decision from evidence

There is no universal repair-versus-replacement winner. Compare the actual failed component, the inspected estimate, your coverage and the cost of replacing the whole set. Apple’s service pages do not publish one price that applies to every model, country, provider or damage scenario.

Decision factor Why it matters
Case accepts wired power A working case can make an individual-earbud service option more sensible than replacing everything.
One earbud or both fail A single affected earbud and a completely dead case are different service cases.
Battery reading changes after 15 minutes A change indicates that at least part of the charging path is functioning.
Debris is visible and safely removable Cleaning may address an external obstruction; do not force anything into the port.
Model-specific reset changes behavior Improvement after reset points to a settings or software state rather than proving a battery failure.
Warranty or AppleCare coverage Coverage can change the service cost and available options.
Inspected estimate versus replacement cost Use the actual quote for your model and region, not a generic online repair number.

When to contact Apple service

If a known-good wired charge, power-path check, status review, safe cleaning and the correct reset do not restore charging, stop repeating the same steps. Apple offers troubleshooting and service or replacement options, but says it must inspect the product to provide a personalized estimate. Model, warranty or AppleCare coverage, location and the service provider all affect the result.

Check your coverage before authorizing work and ask which component the estimate covers. Apple’s service information describes a below-80-percent battery-capacity service benefit under applicable coverage; that is not a universal promise of a free repair for every AirPods owner. The service page is available at Apple Service and Repair for AirPods.

When you contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, provide the model or generation, whether the case accepts cable power, whether one or both earbuds are affected, what the status light shows, and what changed after the model-specific reset. That information helps the technician quote the relevant service instead of treating the symptom as an unspecified replacement request.

Use a short checklist before spending money

  • Identify whether the case, one earbud or both earbuds are affected.
  • Charge AirPods or AirPods Pro by cable for at least 15 minutes; charge AirPods Max for at least five minutes with the supplied cable.
  • Verify the cable, adapter, outlet and, for wireless charging, case compatibility and placement.
  • Check the battery display and interpret green, amber or no light correctly.
  • Consider optimized charging on supported models, including the optimized charge limit on AirPods Pro 3.
  • Clean only with a dry, soft-bristled brush; never put anything into the charging ports.
  • Use the older button reset only for AirPods 1–3 and AirPods Pro 1–2; use Apple’s front double-tap sequence for AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3.
  • Remember that resetting clears custom settings.
  • Get an inspection and personalized estimate, with coverage checked, before choosing replacement.
