If a government portal says Aadhaar authentication failed, do not keep submitting the same request blindly. Note the exact reason or error code, verify the Aadhaar details you entered, check whether Aadhaar or biometrics are locked, then retry with the permitted method. A fingerprint problem may be fixed by a careful second capture; a recurring mismatch may require a biometric update at an Aadhaar update centre. If the failure is technical or the service cannot read your identity proof, ask the department or scheme operator for its approved exception process.
Follow this sequence before trying again
The order matters because repeated attempts cannot fix a locked identity, a wrong Aadhaar number or a service-side outage. Keep a screenshot or written note of the message, including any alphanumeric code, before leaving the page.

- Read the complete message. Record whether it says invalid Aadhaar number, demographic mismatch, OTP failure, biometric mismatch, timeout, technical error or another reason. UIDAI’s error-code material uses the stated reason to determine the correction or retry.
- Check the number and details. Re-enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number and compare your name, date of birth, gender or address fields with the details the service requests. Do not alter a field merely to make it resemble a document if the service is asking for a different record; ask the service which field is being matched.
- Check lock status. A locked Aadhaar or locked biometrics can make an otherwise correct attempt fail. Use UIDAI’s official Lock/Unlock or Biometric Lock/Unlock service and follow its current verification steps.
- Retry the permitted modality once. Generate a new OTP rather than reusing an expired one. For a fingerprint attempt, clean the finger and scanner, place the finger correctly and apply steady pressure. If the service offers another enrolled finger or an allowed iris or face option, use that option.
- Save the result. If the second attempt fails, record the time, service name, transaction or application number and error code. This information lets the requesting department identify whether the failure occurred in its system or at the authentication stage.
- Contact the requesting service. Ask which exception-handling or alternate identity route applies to that specific scheme. UIDAI guidance does not mean every department accepts every alternate method.
What can cause an Aadhaar authentication failure?
Authentication is a check between the requesting entity, UIDAI’s authentication service and the details or modality you submit. A failure does not by itself prove that your Aadhaar is invalid. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in a Rajya Sabha answer dated 22 September 2020, identified broad categories such as technical or network problems, demographic mismatches, biometric mismatches and OTP-related failures. Current service rules can add their own validation or eligibility checks.

| Invalid Aadhaar number or details do not match | Number was mistyped, or the supplied demographic data does not match the record or the service’s required format. | Re-enter the number and requested fields exactly as required; use the service’s code-specific correction guidance. |
| OTP invalid, expired or not received | The code was entered incorrectly, timed out, or delivery was delayed. | Request a fresh OTP, enter the newest code promptly and check whether the registered mobile can receive messages. |
| Fingerprint, iris or face mismatch | The captured biometric did not match the enrolled template, or the capture quality was poor. | Repeat the capture carefully, try another enrolled finger or an available modality, and seek a biometric update if failures recur. |
| Authentication locked | Aadhaar-level or biometric-level lock is blocking the modality. | Check the relevant UIDAI lock status and unlock through the official route before retrying. |
| Timeout, network or technical error | The device, local network, requesting portal or authentication connection did not complete. | Wait briefly, check the portal’s status or connectivity, retry once, then give the service the code and transaction details. |
Check whether Aadhaar or biometrics are locked
Aadhaar-level lock
UIDAI guidance says an Aadhaar lock prevents authentication using the Aadhaar number, UID token or VID across biometric, demographic and OTP modalities. If this lock is active, changing from fingerprint to OTP will not solve the problem because the restriction applies to the Aadhaar authentication methods themselves.

Open UIDAI’s official Aadhaar Online Services and choose the current Lock/Unlock Aadhaar control. Complete the identity checks shown there, then confirm that the service reports the lock has been removed before returning to the government portal. The exact screen names and verification sequence can change, so use the labels displayed on UIDAI’s site rather than an old screenshot or an unofficial tutorial.
Biometric lock
A biometric lock blocks biometric authentication, including fingerprint, iris and face authentication, while leaving the lock’s scope different from an Aadhaar-level lock. If OTP or another modality is permitted by the requesting service, it may still be available when only biometrics are locked.
UIDAI’s Biometric Lock/Unlock service requires access to the registered mobile for the lock and unlock process described on its service page. If you cannot receive the required verification, tell the requesting department and UIDAI support what is preventing access; do not share an OTP with a caller claiming to be an agent.
Fix a fingerprint failure at the scanner
A single fingerprint rejection is often a capture problem rather than a permanent identity problem. UIDAI’s resident advice recommends the following physical checks:

- Wash or wipe excess moisture, dirt or oil from the finger, and clean the scanner surface as permitted by the operator.
- Place the enrolled finger flat and in the position indicated by the device. Avoid twisting, sliding or touching only the fingertip.
- Use suitable, steady pressure. Pressing too lightly can leave an incomplete image; pressing excessively can also distort the capture.
- Try a different finger that was enrolled in Aadhaar, if the operator’s device offers that choice.
- Allow the operator to recapture rather than repeatedly forcing the same poor-quality placement.
If careful attempts with more than one enrolled finger continue to fail on different occasions, approach an Aadhaar update centre and ask about updating biometrics. A biometric update is the appropriate long-term route for recurring capture or mismatch problems; buying a scanner or changing a home device cannot directly authenticate you with UIDAI.
Correct demographic and OTP errors
Demographic mismatch
A demographic mismatch means the values sent by the requesting entity did not match the values it used for authentication. Read the service’s field instructions: it may require a particular spelling, date format or subset of Aadhaar data. Correct an obvious typing error, but do not guess which record is authoritative. If your Aadhaar details themselves need correction, the requesting service may direct you to an Aadhaar update process rather than allowing an in-portal override.
OTP validation or delivery failure
Use the newest OTP only. If several messages arrive, an earlier code may be invalidated when a later one is generated. Enter the digits without spaces and within the validity period shown by the service. If no message arrives, verify that the mobile number registered with Aadhaar is available and that the phone has network service. The portal may also have a separate resend or regenerate control; use it instead of repeatedly submitting an old code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the problem is technical or network-related
A timeout can occur at the government portal, the authentication connection, the operator’s device or the local network. First check whether the portal itself has loaded normally and whether a transaction number was created. Avoid pressing Submit repeatedly: duplicate requests can make it harder for support to determine which attempt failed.

Retry once after a short interval using the same official portal and a stable connection. If the portal displays a maintenance notice, a gateway error or a persistent technical code, capture it and stop repeating the attempt. Contact the service operator with the code, time, application number, browser or app used, and whether the failure occurred before or after an OTP or biometric capture. Only that service can confirm whether it has an outage, a rejected request format or a policy restriction.
Ask for the service’s exception-handling route
UIDAI’s authentication guidance says service providers should maintain alternate identity or exception-handling processes for technological and biometric limitations. The available route is controlled by the particular department, benefit scheme and current rules. It may involve another permitted biometric modality, OTP or TOTP where feasible and admissible, or an in-person document check.
A UIDAI compendium describes physical Aadhaar-letter QR verification as a possible measure in certain benefit-scheme situations. That is conditional, not a universal replacement for online authentication. Do not assume that a printed letter, a QR scan, OTP, TOTP or an operator’s manual check will be accepted by your portal. Ask the requesting entity:

- Which alternate modality or document check is approved for this exact service?
- Must the fallback be completed at a centre, through an official app or before a stated deadline?
- What evidence of the failed attempt should you bring or upload?
- Will the department preserve the application date while the exception process is completed?
Request the answer in writing, through the department’s listed helpdesk, ticket system or service centre, so you have a reference if a benefit or application deadline is approaching.

When to update Aadhaar biometrics
Use a biometric update centre when fingerprint or other biometric authentication repeatedly fails over time despite correct placement, clean equipment and attempts with another enrolled finger. Tell the operator that you are experiencing recurring authentication failures and keep the acknowledgement issued for the update. An update does not instantly repair a portal’s separate technical problem, so continue to retain the service’s error code and application details.
Do not treat one failed capture as proof that your Aadhaar record is wrong. Skin condition, worn fingerprints, sensor quality and positioning can affect a single capture. The case for an update is a pattern of failures across attempts or services, not one isolated rejection.
What to give the government service’s helpdesk
Support can act faster when it can reproduce the exact request. Provide only information through the department’s official channel and never disclose an OTP or full authentication secret to an unsolicited caller.
- Your name as shown in the application and the service or scheme name.
- Application, transaction or beneficiary reference number.
- Date and approximate time of each failed attempt.
- The exact displayed reason or error code, copied character for character.
- The modality used: OTP, fingerprint, iris, face or another option.
- Whether Aadhaar or biometrics were locked and whether you attempted an official unlock.
- A screenshot with unnecessary personal numbers masked, if the helpdesk requests one.
Ask the helpdesk to state whether the failure was received from the authentication service, rejected by its own validation, or caused by an outage. That distinction determines whether you should retry, update biometrics, correct data or use an exception route.
Important limits and safety checks
- An authentication failure does not automatically mean Aadhaar is invalid, cancelled or fraudulent.
- A consumer-owned fingerprint scanner cannot authenticate directly with UIDAI outside an authorized requesting entity and its compliant process.
- Do not pay for a product that promises to bypass a government portal’s lock, mismatch or server error; no general physical product is established as a remedy.
- Use only official UIDAI and government service channels for lock controls, updates and support. Verify the domain and contact details before entering Aadhaar or OTP information.
- Never send an OTP, full Aadhaar credentials or a biometric capture to an unknown person offering to “fix” the failure.
What the rules require the service to tell you
The Aadhaar Authentication and Offline Verifications Regulations, 2021 state: “In case of authentication failure the requesting entity should, in clear and precise language, inform the resident about the reasons of authentication failure.” If a portal gives only a vague message, ask its helpdesk for the precise reason or code and the approved next step. The regulation supports a request for an explanation; it does not require every service to accept the same alternate document or modality.
A practical decision guide
| If your failure is… | Do this first | If it continues |
|---|---|---|
| An incorrect number, field or error-code correction | Re-enter the Aadhaar number and requested details, following the service’s code-specific instructions. | Send the code and transaction reference to the concerned service. |
| Fingerprint or other biometric mismatch | Clean the finger and scanner, use correct placement and pressure, and try another enrolled finger or permitted modality. | Ask an Aadhaar update centre about biometric updating and ask the service for its fallback. |
| Aadhaar-level lock | Use UIDAI’s official Lock/Unlock Aadhaar control. | After confirmation of unlock, retry the modality the service accepts; contact the service if the lock status is clear but failure remains. |
| Biometric lock | Use UIDAI’s Biometric Lock/Unlock route, with the registered mobile required by that service. | Use an allowed non-biometric method or the service’s exception process if unlocking is not possible. |
| Network, timeout or service-policy problem | Retry once after checking connectivity and save the displayed code. | Open a ticket with the department and request its current exception-handling procedure. |
The safest approach is therefore diagnostic rather than repetitive: preserve the message, remove the specific cause you can control, and make the requesting government service explain the route it accepts when authentication still cannot be completed.
