A vendor-assigned CVE is a public record that can be corrected, not a final ruling on every technical assertion. First preserve the record and its sources, then identify the exact field or conclusion that is missing, wrong, duplicated or contested. Ask the assigning CNA (often the vendor) for a specific, evidence-backed update. If the issue remains unresolved, use the CVE Program’s current request route and describe the disagreement without presenting either side’s interpretation as settled fact.
What a vendor-assigned CVE actually represents
A CVE record gives a vulnerability a stable identifier and a concise public description. The assigning CNA (CVE Numbering Authority) is responsible for creating and maintaining that record within its scope. A vendor can therefore publish a record that is useful but incomplete, or a record whose wording another party believes is inaccurate. The existence of the ID does not make every sentence in the description independently verified.

The CVE Program’s correction guidance allows several outcomes: adding or updating a reference, revising a description, resolving a duplicate assignment, or rejecting an entry. A correction may be initiated by the CNA that assigned the ID, by a third party bringing new information, or by a Root or Primary CNA resolving an issue. See the current CVE correction guidance for the governing concepts.
Start with the record itself, not a screenshot or a search-result snippet. Save the CVE ID, assigning CNA, publication and update dates shown, record version if displayed, every reference, and the date you retrieved it. Those details establish which wording you are asking someone to change.

Classify the problem before contacting anyone
Different problems require different requests. A precise classification prevents a technical disagreement from being treated as a simple missing-data edit.
| Problem you found | What it means | Most useful first action |
|---|---|---|
| Missing product or version detail | The record does not identify an affected release, configuration, component or fixed version that primary evidence supports. | Request an explicit description or reference update and provide the vendor advisory, release notes or affected-version matrix. |
| Factual error | A statement is demonstrably wrong, such as an incorrect product name, version range, impact or remediation. | Quote the incorrect sentence or field, explain the contradiction and attach authoritative evidence. |
| Duplicate assignment | Two CVE IDs describe the same underlying issue, or one entry was assigned more than once. | List the overlapping records and explain why their scope and root cause are the same; ask for the appropriate duplicate resolution. |
| Disagreement about whether it is a vulnerability | A party disputes exploitability, security impact or whether the behavior falls within the CVE definition. | Present the competing technical claims and evidence; request attribution or a status change only if the evidence supports it. |
| Disagreement about the assignment process | The concern is who assigned the ID, whether the CNA had authority, or how the decision was made. | Document the process issue separately and use the escalation route that matches the CNA’s hierarchy. |
Build an evidence record before asking for a change
Use primary material whenever possible: the vendor’s security advisory, a signed release or patch note, affected-product documentation, a reproducible technical analysis, and the researcher’s original report. Preserve the exact URL, publication date and relevant quotation for each source. If a source has changed, keep a dated copy or an archived reference that your organization is permitted to retain.
Separate observation from interpretation. For example, “version 4.2.1 contains the vulnerable function and 4.2.2 removes it” is an observable claim supported by code or release evidence. “The issue is remotely exploitable” is an interpretation that should be tied to attack prerequisites, reachable interfaces and authentication requirements. State which facts are established, which are inferred and which remain disputed.

MITRE’s CNA-LR guidance asks requesters to identify what is affected, categorize the issue (for example by weakness or impact), and express a good-faith belief that the claim is unique and valid. Use that as a quality standard even when you are requesting an update rather than a new ID. Do not inflate severity, imply exploit evidence you do not have, or bundle unrelated findings into one request.

Step-by-step workflow for correcting the record
1. Capture the current record and provenance
Write down the CVE ID exactly as published, the CNA name, the record’s dates or version information, and all references. Save the vendor advisory and any affected-version tables. Note the time zone and retrieval date in your internal case file so later edits can be compared with the wording you originally reviewed.
2. State the disputed field or conclusion in one sentence
Make the problem testable: “The description omits the affected 3.8.x branch,” “the fixed version is listed as 5.1.0 but the vendor patch notes identify 5.1.2,” or “the record says local access is required, while the documented attack path is unauthenticated network access.” Avoid a general statement such as “this CVE is wrong.”
3. Check for an existing record or correction
Search the CVE record and its linked references for a newer update, a second CNA record, a rejected entry or a duplicate notice. A perceived omission may already be addressed in a later version. If two records exist, compare product scope, root cause, affected versions and references before calling them duplicates.
4. Contact the assigning CNA or vendor first
Send a concise, professional request through the vendor’s published security or vulnerability-reporting channel. Identify the CVE ID and the exact text or field at issue. Include primary evidence, the affected products and versions, and the correction you are asking the CNA to publish. The CVE guidance recognizes that a third party with information absent from an entry may initiate a change, while also noting that each CNA’s vetting practices vary.

5. Use an evidence-led request format
The following structure keeps the request reviewable without pretending that every item is a universal mandatory form field:
Subject: Correction request for CVE-YYYY-NNNNN
CVE ID and current record:
Assigning CNA:
Affected product and versions:
Fixed or unaffected versions (with source):
Problem type: missing detail / factual error / duplicate / vulnerability disagreement / process issue
Exact current wording or field:
Evidence:
- Primary advisory or release note:
- Technical reproduction or analysis:
- Additional reference:
Requested correction:
What remains uncertain or disputed:
Good-faith statement: I believe the information above is unique, relevant to this CVE, and supported by the cited evidence.
Ask for one outcome per request when possible. If you need both a version correction and a technical-status change, identify them as separate points so the CNA can accept one without losing the other.
6. Keep coordinated disclosure separate
A correction request concerns the public CVE record; it does not replace vulnerability disclosure coordination. Continue any needed communication about embargoes, fixes, researcher credit, exploit details or customer notification with the supplier or the designated disclosure coordinator. MITRE states explicitly that “It is important to note that a CVE ID request to the MITRE CNA-LR does not make it a Coordinator in a CVD (Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure) process.”
7. Escalate through the current CVE Program route when necessary
If the assigning CNA does not resolve the issue, use the CVE Program’s current contact options. The Contacting the CVE Program page distinguishes general Secretariat support from MITRE CNA-LR CVE ID requests. CNA-LR requests cover new requests, updates, initial publication requests and suggested CVE List updates. The page notes that a legacy form may remain during the transition but is planned for retirement, so follow the live instructions rather than an old bookmark.

8. Keep an audit trail and update your own advisory
Record when you contacted the CNA, the evidence supplied, replies received and the exact public result. If the record changes, compare the new wording with your requested correction and retain the earlier version for incident, compliance or research records. If no change is made, document the CNA’s explanation and preserve the unresolved technical disagreement rather than silently rewriting your own report.

MITRE CNA-LR has a defined scope. It publishes records when no designated supplier CNA exists or after a valid dispute over an assignment decision within the MITRE hierarchy. It does not automatically take over reporter-supplier coordination. Do not assume that submitting a request guarantees a correction, an appeal, a response deadline or a particular outcome; the public guidance does not establish universal timelines, and CNA practices for vetting updates differ.
What the “Disputed” label means
On NVD vulnerability detail pages, “Disputed” records a disagreement rather than deciding it. NVD defines the marker as: “When one party disagrees with another party’s assertion that a particular issue in software is a vulnerability.” Read the label as a signal to inspect the competing claims and evidence. It does not, by itself, prove that the issue is invalid, nor does it confirm the vendor’s position.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen you write about a disputed CVE, attribute each position: state what the vendor says, what the researcher or another party says, what the available evidence demonstrates, and which points remain unresolved. Keep claims about exploitability, impact and affected versions tied to the source that supports them.

How to handle each possible outcome
The CNA adds or revises information
Check that the new description identifies the correct products and versions, preserves necessary limitations and links to the relevant advisory or patch. Update internal scanners, tickets and customer guidance from the revised record, but retain your original evidence trail.
The CNA marks an entry as duplicate
Map the surviving ID to every affected product and version in your systems. Remove the duplicate only after confirming that the surviving record covers the same root cause and scope; superficially similar symptoms can represent separate vulnerabilities.
The entry is rejected
Read the stated reason and distinguish rejection of the CVE entry from a finding that no security issue exists in every environment. Keep independent technical evidence and explain the rejected status accurately in your advisory.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes that weaken a correction request
- Sending a broad accusation without identifying the record field or sentence.
- Relying on a reposted summary when the vendor advisory or patch note is available.
- Mixing several unrelated CVEs, products or disclosure negotiations in one ticket.
- Presenting a proof-of-concept as proof of real-world exploitability without describing prerequisites.
- Requesting deletion when a precise description or reference update would resolve the problem.
- Treating the “Disputed” marker as a verdict instead of a recorded disagreement.
- Assuming CNA-LR will coordinate embargoes, vendor communications or researcher credit.
- Promising a correction date or outcome that no official policy guarantees.
A practical final checklist
- Have you recorded the CVE ID, CNA, dates, version information and every reference?
- Can you name the exact missing, incorrect, duplicate or disputed element?
- Are affected and fixed versions supported by primary evidence?
- Have you separated observed facts from technical interpretation?
- Is your requested change specific enough to accept, reject or partially apply?
- Did you contact the assigning CNA before escalating?
- Are disclosure coordination and CVE-record correction being handled as separate tracks?
- If escalating, are you using the current MITRE CNA-LR or Secretariat route?
- Will your public wording preserve attribution and unresolved uncertainty?
