Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your bank account was debited but a merchant says the UPI payment is missing, do not pay again immediately. First open the UPI app and record the transaction’s status, reference number, date, time, amount and merchant details. A debit entry alone does not prove that the merchant received a confirmed payment. Report the transaction through the app’s help flow or to the bank that debited your account, while the merchant asks its acquiring bank to trace the payment.
Start with the transaction status, not the debit notification
Open the UPI app used for the payment and find the entry in Transaction history. Record the exact status shown: Pending, Failed or Successful. Save the UPI transaction ID or RRN, the date and time, amount, merchant name or virtual payment address, and a screenshot or notification. These details allow the remitter bank (the bank that debited you) and the merchant’s acquiring bank to search for the same transaction.

NPCI’s merchant-payment guidance treats merchant receipt as a later confirmation into the merchant’s pool or bank account under the merchant’s agreement. Therefore, a statement line showing money leaving your account is not, by itself, proof that the merchant received a confirmed payment.
- Pending: the payment has not reached a final state in the app. Do not describe it to the merchant as definitively paid or failed.
- Failed: the payment attempt was rejected or could not complete. Follow the refund and complaint steps below.
- Successful: the app records a completed transaction, but a merchant that cannot see it still needs a trace through its acquiring bank and your bank.
Never give a support caller your UPI PIN or one-time password. A bank or app does not need either credential to investigate a transaction.

Use the correct RBI deadline for the type of failure
RBI’s 2019 framework has separate outer limits for a UPI funds transfer and a UPI merchant payment. “T” means the transaction date. The limits below are the regulator’s outer turnaround times, not a promise that every case will take that long. RBI says participants should try to resolve failed transactions sooner.
| Situation | RBI outer limit | Compensation for delay |
|---|---|---|
| UPI funds transfer: your account is debited but the beneficiary’s account is not credited | Reversal by T+1 day | ₹100 for each day beyond T+1 |
| UPI merchant payment: your account is debited but confirmation is not received at the merchant location | Auto-reversal within T+5 days | ₹100 for each day beyond T+5 |
Do not apply the T+5 rule to every UPI problem. It is specifically for the merchant-confirmation scenario. A transfer to another person or bank account, where the beneficiary is not credited, uses T+1 instead.
The RBI circular, DPSS.CO.PD No. 629/02.01.014/2019-20 dated September 20, 2019, calls the prescribed turnaround time “the outer limit for resolution of failed transactions.” It also says compensation must be credited “suo moto, without waiting for a complaint or claim from the customer.” If the applicable outer limit passes, ask the bank to confirm the reversal and the automatic compensation due under the matching scenario; keeping a complaint reference makes follow-up easier.

If the app says “Failed”
- Open the failed transaction and choose the app’s Help, Report issue or equivalent option.
- Select the reason that describes a debited account or a missing refund. NPCI’s July 2023 UPI Help taxonomy includes U009, “Customer account not credited back for failed merchant transaction.” An app may show plain-language labels instead of the internal code.
- Contact the bank that debited your account if the refund has not appeared within one hour. This is NPCI FAQ contact guidance, not a statement that RBI’s maximum reversal period is one hour.
- Keep the complaint number and the original transaction reference. Do not initiate repeated payments while the first attempt is being traced unless you have assessed the risk of a duplicate charge.
A failed status and a debit can coexist temporarily while the payment system reconciles. The bank’s ledger and the UPI app should eventually show a reversal or a final outcome; support can trace the reference if they do not.

If the app says “Pending”
Do not infer success or failure solely from the debit. NPCI’s FAQ says a pending transaction may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours when the beneficiary bank is delayed. That statement is FAQ guidance and can depend on the transaction context; it is not a universal guarantee that every pending payment will settle within 48 hours.
- Save the pending status and transaction ID.
- Tell the merchant that the payment is pending and provide the reference, not your UPI PIN or OTP.
- Use the in-app complaint route or call the debiting bank if confirmation remains absent. Ask the bank to state the recorded final status and the expected reversal path.
- Ask the merchant to watch its acquiring-bank records rather than relying only on a cashier’s screen or a customer-provided debit alert.
If the transaction later becomes successful, the merchant can match it by reference. If it becomes failed or is reversed, the app and bank should show that outcome.
If the app says “Successful” but the merchant cannot find it
Give the merchant the UPI transaction ID or RRN, amount and timestamp and ask it to have its acquiring bank trace the payment. The acquiring bank is the merchant’s payment-side bank; it is different from the bank that debited your account. At the same time, contact your debiting bank or UPI app and request a trace showing the final status and destination.
NPCI identifies U022 as “Account debited but transaction confirmation not received by merchant.” This label helps you choose a matching complaint category, but not every app exposes the U022 code. Select the closest description available and include the reference number in the narrative.

A successful label in your app and a merchant’s inability to locate the payment can reflect a delayed merchant notification, an acquiring-bank reconciliation issue or a mismatch in the merchant’s records. Only the participating banks’ systems can establish whether the payment settled, was reversed or was duplicated.
How the customer and merchant should coordinate
Your bank or UPI app
Raise the complaint from the transaction details page whenever possible. NPCI says customers can raise a grievance or check status through the UPI app of a participating bank. The app or bank can see the customer-side debit, route the complaint to the relevant member and provide a complaint reference. If the transaction is fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorized, report it directly to your bank as an unauthorized-transaction complaint rather than treating it as an ordinary merchant delay.
The merchant’s acquiring bank
The merchant should give its acquiring bank the customer’s reference, amount, date and time, and the merchant identifier used for the payment. NPCI directs merchants to their acquiring banks for this follow-up. A cashier or store manager may not have access to settlement records, so an answer based only on the point-of-sale screen is not conclusive.

- Screenshots or notifications, with PINs, OTPs and unrelated account data hidden
Do not create a second payment by mistake
When a purchase is urgent, a merchant may ask you to try again. Before doing so, ask whether the first reference appears in the merchant’s acquiring-bank records and whether your bank has marked it pending, successful or failed. NPCI lists duplicate payment as a merchant complaint category, so a second attempt can leave you with two settled payments if the first one completes later.

There is no universal rule in the cited guidance requiring a customer to retry or prohibiting a retry in every urgent purchase. The practical choice depends on the merchant’s need, the first transaction’s status and your ability to document both references. If you must retry, obtain a receipt for the second payment and keep both transaction IDs so the merchant can identify and refund a duplicate if necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the refund or credit is late
Use the scenario table above to identify the applicable T+1 or T+5 limit. Count from the transaction date as RBI states it; do not describe T+5 as five guaranteed 24-hour periods. The regulator’s limit is an outer boundary, and participants are expected to work faster where possible.
If the deadline passes without a reversal or beneficiary credit:
- Reply to the existing bank or app complaint with the transaction reference and ask why the applicable RBI outer limit was missed.
- Ask the bank to confirm the compensation calculation. RBI specifies ₹100 per day beyond T+1 for an uncredited UPI transfer and ₹100 per day beyond T+5 for a merchant-confirmation failure.
- Request the complaint reference, the date it was logged and the expected credit date. Compensation is intended to be automatic; filing a separate claim should not be treated as a prerequisite.
- Keep statements showing the debit, any reversal and any compensation credit.
NPCI’s one-hour advice for contacting the bank after a failed refund is useful for prompt reporting, but it does not replace the RBI scenario-specific outer limits.

Escalate an unresolved complaint
NPCI’s complaint portal routes a complaint to the relevant member institution, which is responsible for resolution. Start with the UPI app or debiting bank, and preserve every ticket number and response. If the participating bank or payment member does not resolve the matter under the applicable process, use the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman channel, subject to the scheme’s current eligibility and filing requirements. RBI’s ombudsman rules can be amended, so check the current RBI instructions when you file rather than relying on an old form or time limit.
An escalation should contain a short chronology: transaction date and time, amount, status changes, when you contacted the bank, complaint references, the merchant’s acquiring-bank response if available, and the remedy still missing. Attach only relevant records and redact authentication secrets.
What a debit can—and cannot—prove
- It can show: your account was debited or a debit was initiated and recorded by your bank.
- It cannot show by itself: that the merchant received confirmation, that the merchant’s account settled, that the payment was not later reversed, or that a second attempt will be rejected.
- Only the payment records can establish: the final settlement, reversal, duplicate status or a merchant-recording error.
That is why the transaction reference is more useful than a screenshot of the debit alone. The reference lets the remitter bank, UPI member and acquiring bank reconcile the same payment event.

A practical checklist
- Check the exact UPI status.
- Save the RRN or UPI transaction ID, amount, date, time and merchant details.
- Report the issue through the transaction’s in-app help flow.
- Contact the debiting bank if a failed refund has not appeared within NPCI’s one-hour contact guidance.
- For a pending payment, tell the merchant it is pending and ask both banks to trace it.
- For a successful payment missing at the merchant, ask the merchant to contact its acquiring bank while your bank investigates the debit.
- Do not disclose a UPI PIN or OTP.
- Avoid a duplicate payment unless you understand the first transaction’s status and can retain both references.
- After T+1 or T+5, depending on the scenario, request the automatic ₹100-per-day compensation for delay.
- Escalate with the complaint reference through the current RBI Integrated Ombudsman process if the member does not resolve the issue.
