A sharp loss in a stock SIP is a reason to review the investment, not an automatic instruction to sell, keep buying or increase your contribution. First establish what you own, why you bought it, how much of your portfolio it represents and when you will need the money. Then test whether the original investment case still holds and whether you can withstand another decline.
“Stock SIP” usually means investing a fixed amount at regular intervals in individual company shares. That is different from a mutual-fund SIP, where each instalment buys fund units. The arithmetic of fixed-amount buying is similar, but an individual stock does not have a fund’s built-in diversification. No general rule can tell every investor to hold, stop or sell.

Start with a review, not the loss percentage
Your broker’s red figure describes what has happened to the market value, but it does not explain whether the investment still suits you. A falling price can reflect a broad market correction, a sector downturn, company-specific deterioration or a combination of factors. The correct response depends on facts about your holding and your circumstances.

Write down whether each recurring order buys an individual company’s shares, an exchange-traded product or mutual-fund units. The NISM illustration often cited in discussions of SIPs uses mutual-fund net asset value (NAV) units. It demonstrates the arithmetic of investing a fixed rupee amount, not a recovery pattern for a particular company’s shares.

Make a one-page inventory
For every holding, record the information below before changing an order:
- Company name, number of shares and current value.
- Total amount contributed and the average purchase price shown by your broker.
- The holding’s percentage of your total investment portfolio.
- The reason you originally bought it: for example, a business thesis, a time-bound goal or a broad exposure objective.
- The date or time period when you may need the money.
- How much further loss you could tolerate without abandoning essential spending or long-term plans.
This inventory separates a large percentage loss in a small position from a smaller loss in a position that dominates your finances. It also exposes concentration that may be invisible when you look only at the SIP instalment.
How fixed-amount buying changes your average cost
With a fixed rupee contribution, a lower share price buys more shares, all else equal. Suppose a hypothetical investor contributes ₹10,000 each month:
| Month | Share price | Contribution | Shares bought |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₹500 | ₹10,000 | 20 |
| 2 | ₹400 | ₹10,000 | 25 |
After two purchases the investor has 45 shares for ₹20,000, an average cost of about ₹444.44 per share. The lower second price reduced the average cost compared with buying all 45 shares at ₹500. It did not make the investment safe: if the share later trades at ₹300, the 45 shares are worth ₹13,500, below the ₹20,000 contributed.
More shares at a lower price do not guarantee a recovery. A company can continue to lose value, suspend trading, dilute shareholders or fail. A fixed schedule also keeps adding exposure while the price is falling, so the rupee amount at risk can grow even as the average cost declines.

What the NISM bear-market illustration shows
NISM published a hypothetical six-month example for July through December 2024 using ₹10,000 monthly contributions. In its falling-NAV scenario, the investor accumulated 3,334.1 units, but the ending value was ₹55,013 against ₹60,000 contributed. This is a worked mutual-fund example, not observed performance for an individual stock and not a forecast.
Joydeep Sen, the article’s author and a Corporate Trainer (Financial Markets), described the purpose of SIP as “disciplined investments, not trying to time the market.” Discipline, however, is not a substitute for checking whether a security remains appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSeparate long-term goals from money needed soon
The same price fall can be tolerable for a distant retirement goal and dangerous for a tuition payment or emergency reserve due next year. SEBI Investor guidance says short-term investments should avoid risky assets such as equity markets and that money needed soon should not be placed in volatile or illiquid investments.
If the money may be needed soon
- Identify the amount and date required, including a buffer for delays or higher costs.
- Do not assume a falling share will recover before that date.
- Assess whether selling gradually, reducing new purchases or moving future savings to less volatile assets is necessary to meet the obligation. The appropriate choice depends on your circumstances, not on a universal market rule.
If the goal is genuinely long term
A long horizon gives more time for outcomes to unfold, but it does not repair a weak company or remove the possibility of permanent loss. Decide whether you can keep the position through another decline without needing the money. A long horizon is a planning input, not permission to ignore business or portfolio risk.
Re-test the original reason for owning each stock
Review the investment case as if you did not already own the shares. Use current, reliable company disclosures and financial information available to you; do not rely on the purchase price as evidence that the stock is cheap.

Questions about the business
- What specific products, services or competitive advantages were supposed to create value?
- Are revenue, cash generation, debt and profitability moving in the direction your original thesis required?
- Has management changed its strategy, guidance, capital allocation or disclosures?
- Has regulation, competition, technology or a major customer altered the outlook?
- What evidence would prove that your original thesis is wrong, and has that evidence appeared?
A lower quote alone does not answer these questions. Conversely, a company can remain unsuitable even when its price has not fallen much. If you cannot explain the business and the conditions that would invalidate your thesis, treat that uncertainty as a risk rather than filling it with a social-media tip.

Check concentration and diversification
Regular purchases can quietly make one company or sector a large part of a portfolio. Calculate each holding as a percentage of investable assets, not merely as a percentage of the SIP amount. Consider overlapping exposures: several companies may depend on the same commodity, customer, interest-rate environment or regulation.
Diversification cannot prevent every loss, and it does not turn a poor individual stock into a suitable investment. It can, however, reduce the damage caused by one company-specific event. If one position is large enough that another fall would threaten an essential goal, concentration is a planning problem even when the company’s prospects appear reasonable.
Compare the three broad choices
There is no mechanical loss percentage at which everyone should sell or continue. Compare the available actions against the same five questions: does the original rationale still hold, what is the goal and time horizon, how concentrated is the portfolio, when is liquidity required and can you tolerate further loss?
| Choice | May be reasonable when | Key risk or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Continue the existing schedule | The investment case remains sound, the position is appropriately sized, the goal is long term and you can withstand further declines. | Continuing adds exposure; it does not guarantee recovery or limit the loss. |
| Reduce or stop new purchases | The holding has become too concentrated, your goal or risk capacity has changed, or you need time to reassess without adding exposure. | Stopping does not remove shares already owned, and a later rise could occur after you stop. |
| Sell some or all existing shares | The original thesis is broken, the holding no longer fits the goal or risk capacity, or near-term liquidity makes the risk unacceptable. | A sale may crystallise a loss; the decision should follow the review rather than fear of a displayed percentage. |
These are decision categories, not personalised recommendations. You can also use a combination, such as reducing an oversized position while directing future savings elsewhere, provided the approach is consistent with your plan.

Should you stop a SIP when the stock market falls?
A broad market decline does not by itself prove that every company is impaired. NISM recorded a historical correction from the September 2024 peak to March 13, 2025: the Nifty 50 fell 14.6%, Nifty 500 17.6%, Nifty Midcap 150 20.4% and Nifty Smallcap 250 24.3%. These are historical figures published by NISM in 2025, not current-market data or a forecast, and an index move says nothing conclusive about one company.
Instead of reacting to a headline, ask whether the fall changes your portfolio’s ability to meet its goal. If the answer is no and the holdings still pass your review, continuing may be consistent with your plan. If the answer is yes, pausing or changing the plan can be rational. Neither response should be justified solely by a desire to predict the next market move.
Should you continue investing in a stock that keeps falling?
Repeated declines are a signal to investigate, not proof that the next instalment is a bargain. Continuing is defensible only after you have considered the company’s current facts, position size, diversification, time horizon and capacity for further loss. If the business case is no longer credible, buying more to lower the average price can increase the damage.
Do not confuse averaging with doubling down
A fixed contribution is different from an instruction to increase the contribution after every fall. Do not double contributions simply because the price is lower. An increased amount concentrates more money in the same uncertain security and can turn a manageable position into a dominant one.

Risks and behaviours to avoid
- Borrowing to average down: SEBI specifically lists borrowing for investment as conduct to avoid. Interest and repayment obligations can force a sale at the worst time.
- Following hot tips: A message, influencer post or rumour is not a substitute for analysing the company and checking whether the advice is suitable for you.
- Using essential cash: Keep money for near-term expenses and emergencies separate from volatile investments.
- Watching only the average price: A lower average can conceal a growing total exposure and a deteriorating business.
- Assuming recovery is guaranteed: Neither a fixed schedule nor a historical index rebound promises that an individual company will return to its previous price.
A practical review process
- Pause impulsive changes. Give yourself enough time to collect account statements and company information unless an immediate liquidity need requires action.
- List every holding and exposure. Include shares held outside the SIP and related sector exposures.
- Write the goal and deadline. Mark money needed soon separately from genuinely long-term capital.
- Re-state each investment thesis in a few sentences. Include the evidence that would invalidate it.
- Check position size and ability to absorb another loss. Consider how a further decline would affect the goal, not just your emotions.
- Choose a rule you can follow. That might be continuing, reducing new purchases, or selling; document why and when you will review it.
- Automate only after deciding. A standing order is convenient, but automation should implement a considered plan rather than bypass one.
- Record the decision. Note the date, rationale, allocation and conditions that would trigger a fresh review.
When professional help is appropriate
If you cannot evaluate the company, diversification or downside risk confidently, consider consulting a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser. Verify the adviser’s registration through SEBI’s official channels, understand the services and fees, and provide complete information about your goals, liabilities and time horizon. Registration does not make an adviser’s forecast certain, and no adviser can guarantee a recovery.
Best Value
Professional guidance is especially useful when a holding is a large share of your assets, the money has a near-term purpose, you are considering borrowing, or fear is causing repeated unplanned changes. The adviser should help you make a suitable plan rather than promise a particular stock outcome.
Questions readers commonly ask
What should I do when my stock SIP is in loss?
Inventory the holdings, review the original investment case, check concentration and identify when the money is needed. Do not decide from the loss percentage alone; choose among continuing, reducing new purchases or selling only after that review.
Does buying more at a lower price guarantee profit?
No. It can reduce the average cost when the price is lower, but the company may keep declining and the total value can remain below all contributions.
Can a mutual-fund SIP example prove that my stock will recover?
No. A mutual-fund NAV illustration explains fixed-amount arithmetic. It does not establish diversification, valuation or a recovery path for an individual company.
