If a smart home device stopped connecting immediately after you changed router security, first determine whether the change affected WPA2/WPA3 compatibility, the Wi-Fi band, the network name or password, or the phone-to-device setup path. Restore only the setting the device actually requires, then restart and retry before considering a factory reset.
Why a security change can disconnect an otherwise working device
Changing a router from WPA2 to WPA3, enabling WPA3/WPA2 transition mode, combining or separating Wi-Fi bands, or renaming the network changes what the device must recognize during authentication. A phone may still browse normally while an older sensor, plug, camera, thermostat, or speaker fails because its Wi-Fi chipset or firmware supports a narrower set of options.

Google Home and Nest Help warns that some legacy WPA2 devices can have connection problems when WPA3 transition mode is enabled. ASUS likewise says some older IoT products may lack the firmware or hardware needed for WPA3 authentication. That does not mean every older device is incompatible, or that WPA3 is always the cause. Check the exact model’s documentation before changing a working security configuration.

Some smart home products support only 2.4 GHz, while many modern phones and routers prefer 5 GHz or 6 GHz. A device can therefore fail during onboarding even though the home network appears healthy on the phone.

Start by recording exactly what changed
Write down the router’s previous and current settings before making another change. This gives you a reversible baseline and helps support staff identify the fault.
- Security mode: for example, WPA2, WPA3, or WPA3/WPA2 mixed or transition mode.
- SSID (Wi-Fi name) before and after the change.
- Wi-Fi password before and after the change.
- Whether 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz use one shared name or separate names.
- Whether the device disappears completely, fails inside its setup app, connects to Wi-Fi but shows offline, or repeatedly asks for credentials.
Router menu names differ by model and firmware. Use the current manual or the manufacturer’s support page rather than assuming that a setting called “security,” “encryption,” or “smart connect” behaves identically on another router.
Check the device’s documented requirements
Confirm the supported Wi-Fi bands
Look up the exact model number, not just the product family. The manual or specification page should say whether it supports 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 6 GHz, or more than one band. If the documentation says 2.4 GHz only, ensure that band is enabled and available during setup. Do not assume every smart home device is 2.4 GHz-only; verify first.

Check whether the device supports WPA2, WPA3, or WPA3 transition mode. A legacy WPA2-only device may reject a transition-mode network even though transition mode is intended to support both generations. If the manufacturer lists WPA2 as the requirement, use WPA2 on the relevant band while you complete setup. Google’s guidance and ASUS’s compatibility notes both identify this older-device limitation.

Check region, firmware, and setup prerequisites
Some products require a particular mobile app version, Bluetooth permission, or a phone connected to the same home network that the device will use. These requirements are product-specific. Follow the exact manual, and note the router and device firmware versions before escalating.
Verify the SSID, password, and setup phone
Many post-change failures are credential or network-selection errors rather than encryption defects.
- In the router app or web interface, copy the exact SSID and current password. Watch for spaces, capitalization, punctuation, and a similarly named guest or IoT network.
- Connect the setup phone to the intended network. If the device’s instructions require 2.4 GHz, connect the phone to that band or temporarily separate the band names so you can select it explicitly.
- Start the device’s setup flow again and select the same SSID that the phone is using, unless the product manual specifies a different onboarding path.
- Re-enter the password rather than relying on a saved value in the app.
ASUS advises verifying the IoT network name and password. For Kasa products, TP-Link’s support instructions specifically say the phone and Kasa device should use the same home network and document a product-specific password character and length constraint. Do not apply that Kasa constraint to unrelated brands.

When the device needs 2.4 GHz
Enable 2.4 GHz and make it selectable during onboarding. If the router combines bands under one SSID, temporarily create separate names or disable band steering only if the router manual supports that option. Reconnect the phone to the 2.4 GHz name, complete setup, and then restore combined-band operation if the device continues to work.

When WPA3 or transition mode is the suspected cause
If the device documentation lists WPA2 but not WPA3, change the affected network to WPA2 for testing. On some routers, that means selecting WPA2-Personal or WPA2 with AES rather than a WPA3/WPA2 mixed mode. Linksys recommends WPA2 on 2.4 GHz for certain older IoT devices that struggle with mixed WPA3/WPA2 settings and suggests separate band SSIDs when needed.
Make one security change, save it, wait for the router to restart its radios, and retry setup. If the device connects, you have identified a compatibility boundary. Keep the least permissive change that still meets your household’s security requirements, and check whether a device firmware update adds WPA3 support before leaving an older mode in place permanently.
Use an IoT network only when the model supports it
Some router families provide a separately configurable IoT SSID or a band-specific network. Linksys, ASUS, and NETGEAR describe such options for particular models and firmware. Availability, isolation behavior, and security choices differ, so do not treat an IoT SSID as a universal requirement. If you create one, give the device the exact IoT SSID and password and ensure the setup phone can reach that network as required by the product’s instructions.
Kasa-specific wireless checks
For a Kasa setup failure, TP-Link recommends WPA2 with AES, 2.4 GHz channel 1, 6, or 11, and a 20 MHz channel width. Its guidance also suggests temporarily turning off 5 GHz or using separate SSIDs in some cases. These are Kasa troubleshooting steps, not blanket settings for every smart home product. Restore normal channel and band settings after testing if the device works without them.

Restart before resetting
Restart both ends of the connection according to their manuals:
- Unplug or restart the smart device using its normal power control.
- Restart the router and wait until the intended Wi-Fi bands are broadcasting again.
- Reopen the device app, confirm the phone is on the expected SSID, and repeat onboarding.
ASUS and Linksys both include rebooting in their troubleshooting guidance. If the router or device manufacturer recommends firmware updates, install them through the official procedure and retry. Do not interrupt a router update or remove power while firmware is being written.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you see | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| The device never appears in the setup app | Confirm the device is in pairing mode, the phone is on the intended SSID, and the required 2.4 GHz band is available. |
| Setup rejects the Wi-Fi password | Re-enter the current password exactly and verify that you did not select a guest or IoT SSID with different credentials. |
| Setup fails after the router changed to WPA3 or mixed mode | Check the model’s WPA2/WPA3 support and test WPA2 on the affected band if the documentation allows it. |
| The device joins Wi-Fi but the app says offline | Check whether the device is on an isolated IoT or guest network that blocks the phone or required cloud connection; consult the router and device manuals. |
| The device connects only when 5 GHz is disabled | Use separate SSIDs or the documented 2.4 GHz setup path, then restore 5 GHz after onboarding if supported. |
When a factory reset is justified
A factory reset erases the device’s stored network details and often removes schedules, automations, or local configuration. Use it only after checking compatibility, credentials, band selection, and restarts. Follow the exact manual for the reset button, timing, indicator light, and re-add procedure; holding a button for the wrong duration can trigger a different function.
Recommended Free Tools
After resetting, keep the router on the confirmed compatible security mode and band, put the device into pairing mode, and complete setup from the phone on the intended SSID. If the product supports local settings, record them before resetting so you can recreate them.
Best Value
Escalate with useful technical details
If the device still will not connect, contact the device maker or router maker rather than repeatedly changing security settings. Provide:
- Exact smart device model and hardware revision, if shown.
- Router model, firmware version, and country or region.
- Current security mode and whether transition or mixed mode is enabled.
- Which bands are enabled and whether SSIDs are combined or separate.
- The exact SSID type used (main, guest, or IoT) and the setup phone’s connection.
- The app’s full error message and the step at which it appears.
- What changed immediately before the failure and which settings you already tested.
TP-Link’s Kasa support guidance specifically asks for model and wireless-setting details when escalating. The same level of detail helps other manufacturers avoid generic advice and identify a model-specific limitation.
Prevent the next router change from breaking devices
- Keep a private record of the SSID, password, security mode, band arrangement, and IoT-network settings that your devices use.
- Before enabling WPA3 or changing band steering, check the compatibility page for every older IoT device.
- Update device firmware while the device is still connected, when the manufacturer provides an update path.
- Prefer a clearly named, documented 2.4 GHz or IoT SSID for devices that require one, rather than changing the main network repeatedly.
- Change one router variable at a time and test the affected device before making another change.
A router security upgrade is not automatically the wrong choice; the practical goal is to use a mode and band combination that both protects the network and is supported by every device you need to keep online.
