Write down the information before you start swapping parts. Include the battery model, charger model, tool model, voltage markings and, where shown, serial numbers. A tool and battery can look similar while belonging to different systems, so appearance alone is not a compatibility test. The model-specific support page is also the right place to confirm the approved charger, parts and service instructions.
Perform the safe, simple checks
Disconnect power and inspect the pack
- Unplug the charger from the wall before inspecting or removing the battery.
- Look at the battery housing, terminals and charger contacts. Check for visible dirt, bent parts, cracks, swelling, leakage or other damage.
- Make sure the battery slides fully into the charger and locks into place. Do not force it or modify the rails.
These are general handling precautions, not a universal RYOBI cleaning procedure. Follow the exact manual for any approved cleaning method. If the pack is swollen, leaking, cracked, unusually hot or giving off a burning smell, stop testing it. Do not open the pack, puncture it or attempt an internal repair.

- Record which component the failure follows. If the same battery fails in more than one compatible place while other batteries work, suspect the battery. If multiple good batteries fail on one charger, suspect the charger. If one tool rejects multiple good batteries, suspect the tool.
Change only one item between tests. For example, do not move the suspect battery to a different tool and a different charger simultaneously, because you will not know which change affected the result. Allow each test to reach the state described by the applicable manual, and record whether the tool runs, charging starts, or an indicator displays a documented condition.

Interpret charger lights only from the matching manual
There is no established model-independent RYOBI light-code chart that can safely explain every flashing or solid indicator. A light may reflect charging, a completed charge, a temperature-related condition, a battery fault or another state depending on the charger. Do not purchase a battery merely because it has a similar appearance or voltage printed on the label. Confirm the manual’s platform, chemistry and compatibility information first. If the battery has not been isolated as the cause, buying one can leave a faulty charger or tool unresolved.
Before placing an order, compare the model marking on the proposed replacement with the tool’s support page and manual. Keep the failed battery available until the diagnosis and warranty decision are complete; support may need to identify it, and an unusable pack still requires proper recycling.
Tool or charger repair

Do not use an improvised “reset” or jump-start
No universal RYOBI battery reset, jump-start or direct-power recovery method has been established for all platforms.
