If your robot vacuum stopped responding immediately after you blocked its internet access, first pause the device-specific block and test the vacuum again. Many models use a manufacturer cloud service for app commands, status updates, maps, schedules, and software updates. Restoring access is a diagnostic step: if the app and robot recover, the network rule—not necessarily the hardware—caused the change. The exact result depends on the brand and model, so an “offline” message does not by itself prove that the robot cannot clean.
First determine what actually stopped working
“Stopped working” can describe several different failures. Before changing settings or resetting anything, identify the symptom:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Only the app is offline: The vacuum may still start from its physical button and complete a cleaning run.
- The robot will not start manually: Check charging, the power switch, and error indicators before treating the internet block as the sole cause.
- The app connects but commands fail: The robot may have Wi-Fi access but no connection to the manufacturer’s cloud service.
- The phone is on mobile data: A phone away from your home Wi-Fi can still show cloud or router-related problems differently from a phone on the same local network.
Timing is useful evidence, not proof of hardware failure. TP-Link says local-only control on a Tapo vacuum can mean that it has not connected properly to its cloud server, while iRobot documents several HOME App functions that disappear without a cloud or remote connection. Those statements explain why blocking internet access can affect app behavior, but they do not establish that every robot will stop cleaning or lose Wi-Fi in the same way.
Vorwerk’s guidance for its VR200 and VR300 models illustrates the distinction: the app cannot control a robot shown as offline, but a cleaning run and observation of no-go lines are not necessarily affected. Treat that as model-specific guidance rather than a promise for another brand.

Restore access briefly as a diagnostic test
Temporarily remove or pause only the router rule that blocks the vacuum. Do not change unrelated firewall settings. Give the robot time to reconnect, then test the app and the physical controls.
- Open your router’s device, access-control, parental-control, or firewall page.
- Identify the vacuum by its device name or MAC address and pause the internet block.
- Ensure the robot is powered, on its dock or sufficiently charged, and within normal Wi-Fi range.
- Open the manufacturer’s app and wait for its status to refresh. Try a basic command such as starting or stopping a run.
- Press the robot’s physical start button and observe whether it behaves normally.
If service returns after the rule is paused, the result strongly implicates a cloud or network dependency. This test does not prove that the manufacturer requires unrestricted internet access for every function, nor does it establish an officially supported privacy configuration. It simply separates a network-side change from a likely hardware fault.
TP-Link’s setup guidance notes that local-only control may occur when a Tapo vacuum cannot reach its cloud server and recommends checking whether other devices have internet access. See TP-Link’s Tapo robot-vacuum Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck power, home internet, and Wi-Fi coverage
Confirm charging and power
Make sure the dock has power, the robot is seated correctly, and the battery is not empty. A vacuum that cannot charge can appear offline even when the network is healthy. Vorwerk lists an empty battery among possible causes for an offline VR200/300, and TP-Link likewise advises checking device power.

Test another device on the same network
Use a phone or computer connected through the same router to open an ordinary website. If other devices also lack internet access, fix the router or broadband connection first. If everything else works, focus on the vacuum’s rule, Wi-Fi association, and cloud connection.
Check signal where the robot runs
A robot may connect near the router but lose contact when it moves to a distant room, behind thick walls, or near sources of radio interference. Check the signal in the areas where it normally cleans, not only beside the router. Vorwerk identifies weak Wi-Fi and radio interference as possible offline causes; TP-Link’s offline guidance also calls out Wi-Fi stability and range.
Inspect filtering and address conflicts
Review MAC-address filters, access-control lists, guest-network isolation, and firewall rules. Confirm that the MAC address shown for the vacuum matches the blocked or allowed entry. Vorwerk lists router MAC filtering and IP-assignment conflicts among possible causes. A changed DHCP reservation or duplicate address can also make a previously working device appear to vanish, so check the router’s connected-device list and lease information before resetting the robot.

| Function or symptom | What the available manufacturer guidance establishes | What you should assume |
|---|---|---|
| Physical-button cleaning | Vorwerk says a cleaning run for VR200/300 is not necessarily affected while the app shows offline. | Manual cleaning may continue on some models, but verify your own model. |
| App start, stop, or steering | Vorwerk says app control is unavailable while its cited models are offline. | Cloud or network access may be required. |
| Remote control and status | iRobot lists remote app control as unavailable without a cloud/remote connection. | Expect remote commands and live status to fail when cloud access is blocked. |
| Job history and maps | iRobot lists job history, supported Clean Map reports, and supported i Series Smart Mapping among unavailable features without cloud access. | History, map reports, and some mapping functions may disappear or stop updating. |
| Software updates | iRobot lists software updates as unavailable without a cloud/remote connection. | Do not assume firmware can update while the block remains. |
| Local-only mode | TP-Link says local-only control on a Tapo vacuum may indicate a failed cloud connection. | Do not treat “local-only” as a universal, fully supported mode. |
iRobot’s support article lists these losses for the HOME App, not for every robot-vacuum app. Its guidance supports the general cloud-dependency explanation, but it does not justify publishing a universal firewall port list or promising that another model will behave identically. Read the model’s own support documentation before designing a permanent allowlist.
Restart before you reset
A restart clears temporary Wi-Fi and application states without erasing the robot’s configuration. Use the manufacturer’s normal power-cycle procedure; if the model has a physical power switch, turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it on again, then place it on the dock and allow it to reconnect.
TP-Link’s offline guidance recommends restarting and checking router internet access, Wi-Fi stability, power, and range. Its instructions also say to reset and configure the vacuum again when the Wi-Fi name or password has changed. Read the applicable-model list on TP-Link’s robot-vacuum offline troubleshooting page before applying those steps to a different Tapo model.
Do not jump straight to a factory reset merely because the app says “offline.” A reset can erase Wi-Fi credentials, maps, schedules, or other settings, and reset methods differ by model. Save any information you need and follow the exact support article for your robot.

Reconnect Wi-Fi only when the evidence points there
If the router’s network name or password changed, or if the robot was moved to a different network, use the app’s normal add-device or Wi-Fi setup flow. Keep the phone on the intended home network during setup and grant the permissions the app requests.
iPhone and iPad local-network permission
Roborock’s official troubleshooting article specifically advises checking Local Network permission on iOS 14 or later when Wi-Fi setup fails. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, enable access for the robot’s app, then retry setup. This permission check applies to the cited iOS scenario; it does not establish that every offline problem is caused by iOS permissions. If troubleshooting still fails, Roborock directs owners to contact support: Roborock Wi-Fi and offline guidance.
Weak or missing home Wi-Fi
Xiaomi’s official offline article identifies a weak or unstable signal and missing home Wi-Fi as causes, and advises network reset or reconfiguration for applicable models. Use the instructions for your exact Xiaomi model rather than assuming that all Xiaomi Home devices share one reset sequence: Xiaomi robot-vacuum offline support.
Choose between keeping the block and restoring access
There is no universal setting that provides every cloud feature while blocking all internet traffic. Decide based on the functions you actually need and the behavior your model documents.
Best Value
| Choice | Likely benefit | Likely trade-off | Best next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the internet block | Reduces the robot’s external network access. | App control, remote status, history, maps, schedules, or updates may remain unavailable, depending on model. | Use physical controls if your model still cleans, and accept that unsupported local-control workarounds are not guaranteed. |
| Restore ordinary access | Gives the app and cloud services the connection they were designed to use. | The vacuum can communicate with the manufacturer’s servers. | Confirm which features return, then consult the manufacturer’s privacy and connectivity documentation. |
| Allow a narrowly defined rule | May reduce unnecessary traffic while preserving required services. | No source here establishes universal domains, ports, or a supported allowlist for all brands. | Use only model-specific networking guidance; do not guess at ports or endpoints. |
Manual cleaning, local controls, cloud features, and software maintenance are separate questions. A robot can continue a scheduled or button-started run yet lose app history, remote commands, or updates. Conversely, a robot can have power and Wi-Fi signal but still appear offline if its cloud connection is blocked.
When the vacuum remains offline after unblocking
- Verify the block is really gone. Check both device-level and group-level router rules, schedules, guest-network isolation, and MAC filters.
- Reboot the router and robot. This can refresh DHCP leases and stale sessions without immediately erasing the robot’s setup.
- Check the router’s connected-device list. Look for a new MAC address or duplicate IP entry if the robot recently changed network settings.
- Confirm phone permissions and network. On iOS 14 or later, check Local Network permission for the app when the applicable manufacturer recommends it.
- Re-run Wi-Fi setup if credentials changed. Use the exact model procedure and expect that maps or schedules may need to be restored.
- Contact manufacturer support if the documented steps fail. Provide the model, app version, router behavior, indicator lights, and the time the problem began. Do not factory-reset repeatedly; it can remove useful diagnostic state.
For VR200/300 owners, Vorwerk’s list of possible offline causes includes IP assignment conflicts, weak Wi-Fi, MAC filtering, an empty battery, missing internet, and radio interference. Its exact article is available at Vorwerk’s VR200/300 offline troubleshooting page. The quoted guidance is narrowly scoped to those models.
What not to conclude
- Do not conclude that an offline app status means the motor, battery, or sensors have failed.
- Do not conclude that every robot supports a permanent local-only mode.
- Do not assume a router firewall allowlist will work without model-specific domains or ports from the manufacturer.
- Do not apply a reset sequence from another brand or model.
- Do not treat continued manual cleaning on one model as proof that another model will keep schedules, maps, or no-go lines while offline.
The practical order is simple: identify whether the failure is app-only or physical, briefly restore access, verify power and home internet, inspect signal and filtering, restart, and reset or reconfigure only with exact-model instructions. If unblocking restores service, you must choose between the privacy boundary of the internet block and the cloud-dependent features your vacuum provides.
