A gift-card failure is usually traceable to one of six checks: the characters and code type, the signed-in account, the country or region, prior use or expiry, retailer activation, or a platform service/app problem. Stop repeatedly entering the code. Identify whether it adds wallet credit or unlocks a game or subscription, then use the matching platform procedure below. Keep the receipt and never post the full code online.
Start with these checks before trying again
Write down the exact error message and identify what you bought. A wallet card adds store balance; a game or download code grants specific content; a subscription voucher may have extra account requirements. The code format often reveals whether you are using the right redemption screen.

- Inspect every character. Reveal all digits on a physical card. Do not confuse a platform voucher with a discount or promotional code.
- Confirm the destination account. Check the displayed username, Gamertag, or Nintendo Account before submitting. A successful redemption is normally locked to that account.
- Match the country or region. A code bought for one country may not work in another country’s store. Do not try to bypass a regional restriction with repeated attempts.
- Check status and history. Look at the platform’s service-status page and the account’s transaction or purchase history. History can show that a code was already applied, including on another account used by someone in the household.
- Check the card’s activation and validity. Some physical cards have no value until the retailer activates them at checkout. Promotional codes can expire even when ordinary retail game codes do not.
- Use an official alternate route. If an app or console screen fails, use the platform’s supported website redemption page, while verifying the account shown there.
Keep the purchase receipt, retailer name, purchase date, the exact error, and photographs of the card. Never send the complete code to a stranger, a public forum, or an unofficial “helper.”
PlayStation: voucher, discount code, account and region checks
Verify the code type and length
A PlayStation Store voucher has 12 digits. A 10-digit PlayStation code is a discount code intended for use during checkout, not a wallet voucher to be entered in the normal voucher field. On a physical card, fully reveal every digit before trying again.

Check validity, services and the account
- Re-enter the code carefully and check whether it has an expiry date or other validity condition.
- Check PlayStation service status. If services are available but redemption still fails, sign out of the PlayStation account and sign back in to refresh it, then retry once.
- Open transaction history and the Library on every account associated with the consoles in the household. A voucher is single-use; an “already redeemed” message can mean it was applied to a different household account rather than that the card was stolen.
Funds or content redeemed to the wrong account cannot be transferred to another account. Confirm the account before pressing the final confirmation button.
Match the PlayStation Store region
The voucher’s country must match the PlayStation Store region of the account. Sony says an account’s region cannot be changed after setup, so a card purchased for a different country generally requires help from the retailer or the person who bought it rather than a setting change.
Cards that need retailer activation or are damaged
If the card says “no value until activated at register,” the retailer must activate it. Take the card and receipt back to that retailer; PlayStation cannot activate a card that was never activated at checkout. If a receipt-printed code is damaged, ask the retailer to recover it. For other damaged vouchers, PlayStation Support may request the purchase date, retailer, proof of purchase and images of both sides of the voucher. Do not obscure the code in the private support submission, but do obscure it whenever you share a photo publicly.

Subscription and child-account restrictions
Some subscription vouchers require a credit or debit card to be attached to the account even though the voucher itself has no charge. If an age-rated voucher is being used on a child account, Sony describes an online age-filter adjustment for the family manager in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Korea. Sony states that other territories do not permit age-restricted vouchers for underage account holders, so changing the setting may not be an available solution there.
Xbox and Microsoft: choose the correct Microsoft account and redemption route
Confirm the account that should receive the value
Microsoft and Xbox gift cards, download codes and tokens are redeemed to a Microsoft account. Check the signed-in Microsoft Account and its associated Gamertag before submitting. If several people use the console, sign out of accounts that should not receive the balance or content and sign in to the intended one.
Use the web page when an app or console fails
Try the official browser route at microsoft.com/redeem. Verify the account displayed on the page, enter the code, and read the confirmation showing what will be added before accepting it. This route is useful when an Xbox or Microsoft Store app will not complete a transaction.

Update the affected Microsoft software
If the Microsoft Store reports “Unable to complete this transaction. Please update to the latest version of Microsoft Store,” update the relevant Microsoft Store app, Xbox app or Xbox console. On an Xbox console, use Settings > System > Updates. Restart the app or console after the update and try the web route if the app still fails.

When the code or purchase is wrong
Check account purchase history to see whether the balance or content was already applied. Microsoft’s support material also points to Xbox error and status-code information when a specific code appears. If you bought the wrong type of code or the wrong regional version, contact the retailer that sold it; do not assume Microsoft can exchange a retailer purchase.
Nintendo: separate eShop cards from game and download codes
eShop balance cards
An eShop balance card is not the same as a game or downloadable-content code. Nintendo advises checking similar-looking characters; for example, a printed 5 can resemble a G or S. Enter the code exactly as printed, then verify that the Nintendo Account country and eShop country match the country for which the card was issued.

If the card is damaged or the error remains after the character and country checks, contact Nintendo with the purchase evidence. Keep the card and receipt; do not publish a readable photograph.
Game and downloadable-content codes
Nintendo game and download codes contain 16 characters. You can redeem one in Nintendo eShop while signed in to the intended Nintendo Account, or use Nintendo’s online redemption page. Before confirming online, check the Nintendo Account shown on the page.

- Confirm that the game’s region matches the code. Nintendo states: “A download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game.”
- Check purchase history for a previous redemption. Retailer-purchased game and content codes do not expire, while promotional codes may have an expiry date.
- Read the error number before trying again. Error 2813-0071 can indicate that the game has not released yet; error 2811-6058 calls for waiting briefly and trying again.
Console generation and retailer activation
A code for Switch 2-only content will not work as ordinary Switch content. If a retailer-sold code still fails after the account, region and release-date checks, it may not have been activated correctly. Contact the retailer first, then the publisher or Nintendo as appropriate.
Download-code redemption in the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops ended at 9:30 PM Pacific Time on April 3, 2023. A code intended for those closed eShops cannot be redeemed there now.

What to send when official support or the retailer must intervene
Escalate only after recording the exact message and completing the platform’s account and region checks. Provide:
- the platform and whether the item is wallet credit, a game, downloadable content, subscription or promotion;
- the exact error text or number, including punctuation where possible;
- the purchase date, retailer and country;
- the receipt or other proof of purchase;
- a clear photo of both sides of a physical card when requested by official support; and
- the account identifier needed by that platform, but never a public post containing the complete code.
Retailers are the correct first contact for cards that were not activated, receipt-printed codes that are unreadable, or a purchase of the wrong code. Platform support is the appropriate route for account history, damaged vouchers that the retailer cannot recover, platform errors and eligibility restrictions. Do not promise yourself a refund or replacement: the responsible party and available remedy depend on the failure shown by the platform and the retailer’s records.
Prevent the next failed redemption
- Buy a code for the recipient’s actual store country and console generation.
- Keep the receipt until the balance or content appears in account history.
- Redeem while signed in to the intended account, not whichever account was last used on the console.
- Photograph the receipt and card for your private records, but store the image securely.
- Redeem promotional codes before their stated expiry and wait for a game’s release date when the code is for unreleased content.
The Bottom Line
Match the code type, characters, account and region first; then check history, activation, validity and service status. Use the platform’s official alternate redemption path, and take an unactivated or damaged card back to the retailer with the receipt. Never publish or send the full code to an unofficial third party.
