If a platform leaves up a qualifying nonconsensual intimate image, submit the platform’s intimate-image removal request and save the confirmation. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says covered platforms must remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours after a valid request. If the platform has no working request route or misses that deadline, report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov; the FTC records and enforces complaints but cannot remove the image itself.
A scam impersonator, a hacked account, and an intimate-image post are different problems. Use the route that matches what happened, preserve evidence, and escalate to law enforcement when there is extortion, a credible threat, or immediate danger.

Identify which problem you are reporting
Start by classifying the content and your objective. The legal deadline and the correct form depend on that classification.
| What you see | Primary objective | First route |
|---|---|---|
| A real or fake intimate image shared without the depicted person’s consent | Remove a specific post and known identical copies | The platform’s intimate-image removal process |
| A profile or message pretending to be you or another person, with no qualifying intimate image | Disable the impersonating account and stop a scam | Platform impersonation report, then the FTC’s fraud-reporting service |
| Your own account was taken over | Regain control and prevent further posts | The provider’s account-recovery process |
| Threats, extortion, stalking, or immediate safety risk | Protect people and preserve evidence | Local emergency or law-enforcement resources, alongside platform reporting |
The U.S. TAKE IT DOWN Act route described below concerns qualifying nonconsensual intimate images, including certain digitally created or altered (“fake”) intimate images. It is not a universal takedown rule for every impersonating profile, scam, or ordinary harassment report.

Request removal of a qualifying intimate image from the platform
Use the platform’s dedicated intimate-image form
Open the post, message, profile, or file menu and choose the option specifically for nonconsensual intimate imagery, intimate privacy, or sexual exploitation. A general abuse or copyright form may not put your request into the process covered by the TAKE IT DOWN Act. Follow the form’s instructions, identify the exact location of each item, and provide only the information needed to verify the report.
Submit one request for each platform where the image appears. A removal on one service does not remove copies hosted elsewhere. Do not assume that reporting the profile that uploaded an image also reports every repost; use the service’s intimate-image route for each location.
Keep a precise record
- Copy the page, post, message, or profile URL and the account name or identifier.
- Record the platform, date and time of your request, and any ticket or confirmation number.
- Save the platform’s response, including a rejection, an automated message, or no response at all.
- Note whether the image is still visible, moved to another URL, or reuploaded under a different account.
This record helps you describe what happened to the FTC and to investigators. It is practical documentation, not a claim that federal law requires a particular evidence packet. Avoid redistributing the image while collecting proof; preserve links, screenshots, and messages in a secure location instead.

As explained by the FTC, the TAKE IT DOWN Act requires a covered platform to offer a removal-request mechanism and to remove a qualifying intimate image, along with known identical copies, within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. The period is tied to a valid request, so an incomplete form, an image outside the law’s definition, or a service that is not covered may require a different remedy.

The deadline is U.S. federal law. Do not present it as a global standard, and do not apply it automatically to a non-intimate impersonation account. Rules, deadlines, and appeal rights in another country depend on that country’s law and the service’s policies.
Known identical copies do not each require a separate request under the FTC’s guidance. The agency says its report can include up to five images appearing on one platform. If more than five images or several platforms are involved, keep the locations organized and submit the additional platform reports the services require.
If the platform does not act or has no usable request process
Report the platform to the FTC
- Return to your saved record and confirm the platform, content locations, request date, and response status.
- Open TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
- Describe where the image appeared, which removal route you used (or that no working route existed), and what the platform did afterward.
- Attach or identify the information the FTC form requests. The form is for reporting the platform’s compliance, not for asking the FTC to host or remove the image.
The FTC’s consumer guidance is explicit: “Only platforms can take images down.” An FTC submission creates an accountability and enforcement record; it does not directly delete a post. Continue using the platform’s process for newly discovered copies while the complaint is being handled.
What to expect from the complaint
The FTC may use complaint information to identify patterns or enforce the law, but the available material does not establish a guaranteed response time, individual investigation, or removal outcome for every report. Keep your confirmation and update your records if the platform later removes the content. If the material is being used for extortion, threats, or stalking, make a separate report to appropriate law-enforcement authorities rather than waiting for a platform or FTC response.

Limit reuploads without treating hashing as a guarantee
Image-hashing services create a digital fingerprint that participating services can use to detect a matching file before it is posted or when it is uploaded again. They can reduce circulation, but they do not reach every website, do not replace a report to each platform, and cannot guarantee that a copy will be blocked.
For adults
Adults depicted in an intimate image can consider StopNCII.org as an additional spread-limiting tool. Read its current eligibility and participation information, then continue reporting every platform where the content appears. A hash does not remove a post that is already online unless the participating service takes action under its own system.
For images made when the person was under 18
If the depicted person was under 18 when the image was made, the FTC directs readers to NCMEC’s Take It Down service. Use that service’s instructions and report the hosting platforms separately. Do not upload or forward child sexual abuse material to people who offer to “verify” it; use the official service and law-enforcement channels.

Report the profile or message on the platform
Use the service’s impersonation, fraud, or deceptive-accounts category. Include the account that is being copied, the impersonator’s profile or message URL, and examples of requests for money, passwords, identity documents, or other sensitive information. Tell people who may be contacted by the impersonator through a separate, trusted channel; do not engage in a public argument that could alert the scammer to your evidence.

File a federal fraud report
After the platform report, submit the scam to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC fraud report is different from the intimate-image complaint: it documents deceptive conduct and does not itself disable the account or remove the messages. If your personal information was stolen, use IdentityTheft.gov for the FTC’s identity-theft recovery plan.
Protect yourself while communicating
- Do not click an unexpected link or send money, passwords, verification codes, or identity documents to an unsolicited contact.
- Reach the claimed person or organization through contact details you find independently, not through the message that may be fraudulent.
- Tell banks, payment services, employers, or contacts through their verified channels if the impersonator used their name.
If your own account was hacked
An account takeover is a security-recovery problem, even if the attacker also impersonates you to other people. Use the provider’s recovery page or in-app recovery flow rather than a link sent by the attacker.
- Change the account password from a trusted device. Use a unique password that is not reused elsewhere.
- Sign out other sessions and remove unfamiliar devices, applications, browser extensions, or active tokens.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if the provider offers it; prefer an authenticator app or security key when available.
- Check the recovery email address and phone number, forwarding rules, connected accounts, and recent sign-in history. Restore your own details and remove changes you did not make.
- Warn contacts that messages sent during the compromise may be fraudulent, and report any harmful posts through the platform’s content process.
Securing your account does not automatically remove a third party’s copies or guarantee that a platform will delete posts made during the takeover. Keep the recovery case number and the URLs of harmful content for separate reports.

Escalate threats, extortion, and safety risks
If someone demands money or additional images, threatens violence, publishes your address, stalks you, or creates an immediate danger, prioritize safety over completing an online form. Contact local emergency services when there is an imminent threat. For non-immediate crimes, contact local law enforcement and, where appropriate, the FBI; explain the location, account identifiers, threats, payment demands, and preserved evidence. The correct agency and available remedies depend on where you and the perpetrator are located.
Best Value
Do not pay an extortionist or send more material as a condition of removal. Payment can lead to further demands and does not ensure deletion. If you are a minor, tell a trusted adult and use child-safety and law-enforcement channels; do not handle the situation alone.
Readers outside the United States
The TAKE IT DOWN Act and the FTC portals cited here are U.S.-specific. If you are elsewhere, still use the platform’s own intimate-image or impersonation form, save the same documentation, and contact your national privacy, online-safety, fraud, or law-enforcement agency. A local victim-support organization or lawyer can explain deadlines, preservation orders, and remedies in your jurisdiction. Do not assume that a 48-hour period, the FTC complaint process, or U.S. definitions apply where you live.
Common mistakes that delay a useful response
- Choosing the wrong category: an intimate-image request, impersonation report, fraud complaint, and hacked-account recovery are separate workflows.
- Reporting only the person: for intimate imagery, identify each platform location and use its dedicated removal process.
- Deleting evidence: save URLs, dates, ticket numbers, and responses before blocking or deleting messages.
- Assuming the FTC is a takedown button: it records platform noncompliance; only the platform can remove the image.
- Treating hashing as universal: participating services and matching systems cannot cover every site or guarantee removal.
- Using an unverified “helper”: unsolicited offers to recover images may be another scam. Verify every contact independently.
A practical escalation checklist
- Classify the harm: intimate image, scam impersonation, hacked account, or immediate threat.
- Capture the exact URLs, account names, dates, and messages without forwarding the intimate material.
- Submit the platform-specific report that matches the content.
- Save the confirmation and the platform’s response or lack of response.
- For a qualifying U.S. intimate-image report, use TakeItDown.ftc.gov if the process is missing, broken, or the platform fails to meet its legal obligation.
- For a scam, use ReportFraud.ftc.gov; for stolen identity information, use IdentityTheft.gov.
- For a compromised account, complete recovery, revoke other sessions, and enable two-factor authentication.
- Use StopNCII.org for eligible adults or NCMEC’s Take It Down for images made when the person was under 18, understanding that these tools only assist participating services.
- Contact local emergency services, law enforcement, or the FBI when threats, extortion, stalking, or immediate danger are involved.
The key division of responsibility is simple: request removal from the platform that hosts the content, use the FTC to report a covered platform’s failure, and choose fraud, identity-theft, account-recovery, hashing, or law-enforcement channels according to the harm involved.
