What to Do When a Nintendo eShop Purchase or Download Fails

Do not buy the game again until you know whether the first transaction completed. First identify what failed: payment, a completed purchase that never downloaded, a paused download, a rejected download code, or missing DLC. Then use the Nintendo Account that made the purchase, check the transaction record, confirm the console generation and country, and follow the matching fix below. The menus and code meanings differ between the original Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and several cited policy pages are Japan-specific.

Identify the failure before changing anything

The correct fix depends on where the process stopped. Use this quick classification before retrying a payment or redeeming a code.

What you see Likely stage First check
Your payment was declined or the purchase screen returned an error Payment authorization Check the purchasing Nintendo Account’s receipt email and transaction history before attempting another purchase.
You were charged, but no game icon or download appears Entitlement exists but the console has not started the install Open the account’s Virtual Game Card area, especially on Switch 2, and load the card.
The download started and stopped or remains pending Download queue, storage, or connection state Check HOME Menu download status and free system or microSD storage.
A download code is rejected Redemption, account, region, or release-date issue Record the complete error number and compare it with Nintendo’s code guidance for your console.
The game works but an expansion or add-on is absent DLC installation or in-game claiming Close the base game completely, verify the add-on belongs to that game and account, then launch again.

If you are unsure which Nintendo Account was used, check every account on the console before paying again. Digital purchases and redeemed codes belong to the account selected at purchase or redemption, not automatically to every local user.

1. Confirm whether the purchase actually completed

Check the receipt and account history

Sign in to the Nintendo Account that initiated the purchase. Look for Nintendo’s receipt email and open the account’s transaction history. Nintendo’s Japanese support instructions explain that the website record can be viewed from a phone or computer and covers the preceding two years in that market; some transaction types are not listed. See Nintendo’s eShop usage record and redownload guidance.

#1 Best Overall

Match the product name and amount in the record to the item you expected. A completed record means you should troubleshoot entitlement delivery or downloading, not start a second purchase. If there is no record, check the email address and account you used, then check your bank or card statement. Do not infer that a temporary authorization on a payment account means Nintendo delivered the software.

Do not assume Japan’s refund rule applies worldwide

Nintendo’s Japan-market usage notice says downloaded purchases are generally non-refundable and non-transferable, including before download or use. That is not a universal Nintendo policy statement. For your country, use the local support and purchase terms linked from Nintendo’s regional site; the Japanese notice is at Nintendo’s eShop usage notes. If a payment was duplicated, failed after an apparent charge, or needs a refund review, provide Nintendo support with the account, product, date, amount, and any transaction ID rather than buying again.

2. A paid purchase is missing: locate the entitlement and start it

Switch 2: check Virtual Game Cards

On Switch 2, open the HOME Menu and go to the Virtual Game Card area. Find the purchased software and load its card. Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance says loading the Virtual Game Card can start the software download; the eShop itself is not the redownload path described in that account flow. Follow the current instructions for your market at Nintendo’s Switch 2 download-purchase page.

Original Switch: use the current account redownload flow

On an original Nintendo Switch, the redownload screens and wording have changed over time. Nintendo’s account and eShop pages describe Virtual Game Cards and redownload options, but the exact path depends on the system version, account region, and whether the item is new or previously owned. Start from the account that bought the title and follow the local instructions in Nintendo’s account information guide and eShop usage and redownload support.

$50 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

Check the account shown on the console

If the title appears for one user but not another, switch to the purchasing Nintendo Account. A family member’s local profile does not prove that profile owns the entitlement. A code redeemed by a different account can likewise be valid yet absent from the account you are checking. If the purchase record is present under the correct account but no Virtual Game Card or redownload option appears, capture the account and transaction details for Nintendo support.

3. Check storage and the download queue

Verify free space in both possible locations

A download needs enough free capacity in system memory or on a compatible microSD card. Nintendo’s Japan storage guidance also warns that an update can require additional space beyond the base game’s size. Open the HOME Menu’s data-management or storage screen for your exact console model and compare the available capacity with the game’s listed requirement. The storage guidance is at Nintendo’s download-purchase instructions.

If space is low, archive or delete software you can redownload later, remove unneeded screenshots and videos, or install a microSD card that Nintendo lists as compatible with your model. Expanding storage can solve a capacity error; it cannot fix a declined payment, wrong account, invalid code, or region mismatch.

Read the HOME Menu status

Return to HOME and select the software or download indicator to see whether the item is queued, paused, or reporting an error. Leave the console connected to the internet and powered according to Nintendo’s current instructions. Nintendo’s Japan support notes that some Switch downloads can continue during sleep, while playing a communication-capable game can pause downloads; treat that behavior as model-, system-version-, and market-specific rather than a universal rule. The relevant usage notes are at Nintendo’s eShop usage page.

$20 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]

  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

If the queue shows no item despite a completed transaction, return to the Virtual Game Card or redownload flow instead of repeatedly opening the purchase screen. If it shows an error, record the exact number before closing the message.

4. Decode a rejected download code

On Switch 2, Nintendo’s English support page maps several error numbers to specific causes. These mappings are for the cited Switch 2 instructions and should not be applied automatically to another console, country, or code. Open Nintendo’s “Using the Download Code (Redeem)” guide for the complete local procedure.

Error code What it indicates What to do
2813-0040 or 9001-0040 The code has already been redeemed. Nintendo describes this as the error shown when the entered download code is already redeemed. Check the software icon and Virtual Game Card under every relevant user account. If the item is absent, another account may have redeemed it; ask the code seller or Nintendo support to investigate.
2813-6561 or 9001-6561 The code is incorrect or unavailable for the eShop/My Nintendo Store redemption flow. Re-enter every character carefully, distinguish similar characters, and confirm that the code is intended for this Nintendo service and region. Do not publish the code when requesting help.
2813-0055 or 9001-0055 The item may not be available yet, including because the game or add-on has not reached its release date. Check the announced release date and try redemption only after the item is available in your region.

A code can be genuine and still fail if it was issued for a different country, service, or console-generation workflow. Keep the receipt, retailer, region, and error number together when contacting support.

5. Fix missing DLC or other add-on content

Close the base game completely

Nintendo says additional content may not install while the base software remains suspended or running. From HOME, highlight the game, open the software-options menu, and choose the command that closes the software; then launch it again. This restart gives the console an opportunity to finish installing the add-on. See Nintendo’s local eShop and redownload instructions at the eShop usage-record and redownload page.

$70 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]

Confirm the product and account match

Check that the DLC is for the exact base game, edition, and region you own, and that it was purchased or redeemed by the account being used. Some add-ons are not delivered as a separate HOME icon and must be claimed from a menu inside the game. The publisher’s instructions for that title determine the in-game claim steps; Nintendo’s general account guidance is available at Nintendo’s account information page.

If the transaction record exists, the game is fully updated, the add-on matches, and a full close-and-relaunch does not expose it, give Nintendo support the base-game title, DLC name, account, region, and purchase record.

6. Account, region, and generation checks that prevent repeat failures

  • Country: The cited transaction, storage, refund, and purchase-limit pages are Japan-market documents. Payment methods, refund treatment, code availability, and account menus can differ elsewhere. Use your country’s Nintendo support site for a binding answer.
  • Console generation: Switch 2’s Virtual Game Card and code instructions are not a guaranteed description of original Switch menus. Identify the hardware before following a screen-by-screen guide.
  • Release timing: A code for an unreleased game or expansion can produce an availability error even when every character was entered correctly.
  • Account ownership: A local user profile and a Nintendo Account are related but not interchangeable. The purchasing or redeeming account owns the digital entitlement.
  • Storage location: System memory and microSD capacity are separate. Check the location your console is using and leave extra room for updates.

7. When to stop retrying and contact Nintendo

Use Nintendo’s support lookup with the exact error number when the code is not covered above, the transaction is missing despite a bank charge, or the entitlement is absent from the purchasing account after the correct Virtual Game Card or redownload steps. There is no evidence here for a single, universal network-reset sequence that fixes every eShop failure, so avoid deleting account data or repeatedly purchasing while the transaction status is unclear.

Prepare these details for support:

  • Nintendo Account email or sign-in identifier (never your password)
  • Console model and country or Nintendo Account region
  • Game, DLC, or code name
  • Date, amount, and receipt or transaction ID
  • Exact on-screen error number and a screenshot with the code itself hidden
  • Whether the item appears under Virtual Game Cards, HOME Menu software, or another user account

This evidence lets support distinguish a payment authorization problem from an account-entitlement, release-date, region, storage, or installation problem without creating a second charge.
