What to Do When a Market Rebound Leaves Your Portfolio Allocation Out of Balance

Compare your portfolio’s current allocation with the target that still fits your goals, time horizon, financial situation, and risk tolerance. If the target remains appropriate and market gains have pushed an asset class beyond a review rule you chose in advance, rebalance deliberately—not because you expect the market to reverse. If your circumstances have changed, reassess the target before trading.

Why a rebound can change your portfolio’s risk

Asset values do not rise or fall at the same rate. As a result, your allocation can drift even when you make no trades. If stocks gain faster than bonds, for example, stocks may take up a larger share of the portfolio than you intended, leaving you with more exposure to stock-market swings.

Investor.gov illustrates this with a portfolio that moves from 60% stocks to 80% after market gains. Those figures explain how drift can happen; they are not a recommended stock-and-bond mix. Investor.gov’s diversification guidance describes the example.

Rebalancing restores a chosen allocation. It is not the same as changing that allocation because your goals, time horizon, finances, or tolerance for risk have changed. The SEC defines rebalancing as bringing a portfolio back to its intended mix; it is a way to manage risk, not a forecast of market direction or a promise of higher returns. Investor.gov

Check your target before you trade

  1. Find your current allocation. Review holdings across the accounts that make up the portfolio you are managing. Work out the share invested in each relevant asset class, or use a reliable account summary that provides those percentages.
  2. Compare it with your written target. Look at the allocation you chose for your investment goal—not a target inferred from whichever asset performed best in the rebound.
  3. Ask whether the target still fits. Consider whether your goal, time horizon, financial situation, or risk tolerance has changed. If it has, review the target allocation first; restoring an outdated mix may not serve your current needs. The SEC’s rebalancing guide explains why allocation is tied to personal circumstances.
  4. Apply your review rule. If the target still fits, follow the calendar schedule or drift threshold you selected beforehand. Avoid making a new rule simply because a recent move feels urgent.

Choose a rebalancing approach

There is no single review frequency or drift threshold that works for every investor. Common approaches include:

Approach How it works Trade-off
Calendar-based Review on a regular schedule, such as annually or at another interval you choose. Easy to remember, but allocation can drift between reviews.
Threshold-based Review or act when an asset class moves a preset distance from its target. Responds to drift, but requires monitoring and a threshold chosen in advance.
Combined Review periodically and rebalance only if drift exceeds a chosen threshold. Pairs a reminder with a drift rule; both the target and threshold still need to suit you.
Cash-flow based Direct contributions, dividends, or interest toward underweight assets; when withdrawing, consider taking from overweight assets. Can reduce the need to sell appreciated holdings, but account and tax circumstances matter.

Vanguard illustrates a threshold approach with a 70/30 target and a five-percentage-point threshold: an allocation drifting to 76/24 would prompt a review under that example. These are illustrations, not universal targets or rules. Vanguard also describes calendar and combined approaches. Vanguard’s portfolio rebalancing overview

Rebalance with trades or cash flows

If your review rule calls for action, you can sell some of an overweight holding and use the proceeds to buy underweight holdings, or buy underweights directly. You can also steer new contributions, dividends, and interest toward underweights. If you are already taking money out, consider whether withdrawals from overweight holdings could help restore the mix. The SEC lists sales, purchases, and contribution changes as possible methods. Using cash flows or rebalancing only part of a portfolio may reduce the need to sell appreciated assets. Before making trades, check the account’s rules, possible tax consequences, and transaction costs, including fees. Vanguard discusses cash-flow and partial-rebalancing approaches as ways to consider those costs. Vanguard

Make the next review routine, not reactive

Choose a review schedule, a drift threshold, or a combination while your plan is in place—not in response to each market move. Record the target and the rule you intend to follow, then review the portfolio on that basis. The SEC and Vanguard describe these methods but do not identify one schedule or threshold as right for every investor. Your target, threshold, tax situation, and suitable trades depend on your circumstances.
