Those symptoms have different causes, so there is no single fix. Start by identifying exactly what is happening, then check the game’s current requirements, verify its files, test graphics settings and software conflicts, update drivers and the operating system, and use the title’s own support instructions for named errors. An SSD can shorten loading times, but the evidence does not support treating one as a cure for crashes, low frame rates, or a slow late-game simulation.
The sequence below is designed for Windows PC players, with launcher names and support examples that may differ on macOS, Linux, or consoles. Perform one change at a time, keep a note of the result, and protect saves and mods before deleting game data.

First decide what “slow” or “crashing” means
Grand strategy games stress different parts of a computer at different moments. A crowded late-game map can reduce simulation speed while the mouse and menus remain responsive. A demanding visual effect can lower frame rate without affecting the simulation clock. A damaged file, incompatible mod, driver problem, or thermal issue can produce stutters, freezes, or a desktop crash.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| What you see | What to record | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Simulation advances slowly but menus respond | Whether it happens only in a late save, at a particular date, or in every campaign | Requirements, available memory, background tasks, mods, and title-specific performance guidance |
| Low or uneven frame rate | Map view, zoom level, resolution, detail and shadow settings, and whether windowed mode changes it | Graphics settings, intended GPU, driver updates, and file verification |
| Short pauses or repeated stutters | Whether the pauses coincide with loading, autosaves, map changes, or other applications | Free system memory, background software, mods, storage health, and file verification |
| Long loading screens | Which transition is slow: launch, save loading, changing maps, or exiting to the menu | Drive health and free space; an SSD or M.2 drive may help loading |
| Freeze or crash to desktop | Save, location, elapsed time, recent update, hardware, mods, and any event in Windows or the game log | Requirements, verified files, updates, mods and third-party software, then the game’s support process |
| Launch failure or named error | Exact wording, code, loading percentage, and the stage at which it appears | Search the game’s official support for that exact error before applying generic repairs |
Also note the game version, launcher, operating system, CPU, graphics processor, installed memory, storage drive, and whether the computer is a laptop. These details make a support request actionable and prevent an incorrect diagnosis based on the word “slow” alone.

Check the exact requirements for your game and platform
Open the current system-requirements page for the exact game and platform. Minimum requirements are title-specific; they are not a universal definition of a computer that can run every strategy game well. A Steam listing for Stellaris, for example, shows that requirements can differ by operating system, and the live listing can change.
Compare your hardware with the game’s minimum and recommended information, including operating-system version, processor, system memory, graphics processor, video memory, and available storage. Meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee a particular frame rate or late-game simulation speed. It means only that the configuration falls within the publisher’s stated baseline.
- Confirm that the operating system is supported rather than merely able to launch the program.
- Check the graphics processor model and its video-memory requirement, not just the computer’s total RAM.
- Make sure the game is installed on a drive with sufficient free space and that the drive is healthy.
- For a laptop, identify whether the game is using the integrated graphics processor instead of the intended discrete GPU.
Verify the installation before changing hardware
Missing or damaged files can affect performance as well as prevent a game from launching. SEGA Support’s general troubleshooting guidance and its PC Performance FAQ put file verification near the beginning of the process. Use the verification feature in your launcher—such as Steam or Epic—following that platform’s current menu labels. The operation normally compares local files with the launcher’s copy and replaces files that are missing or altered.
- Close the game completely, including any launcher process that remains open.
- Open the launcher library and select the affected game.
- Open the game’s properties or management menu and choose the current equivalent of Verify integrity, Verify files, or Repair.
- Wait for the check and any download to finish; do not interrupt it by launching the game.
- Restart the launcher and reproduce the original symptom in the same save or menu.
Verification is safe for saves in normal installations, but keep a separate copy of saves and mods before any later step that deletes folders or reinstalls the game.
Use controlled graphics tests for frame-rate problems
If the interface is visibly slow while the simulation itself advances normally, test rendering settings. SEGA’s performance guidance specifically points to demanding detail and shadow options, resolution, window mode, and software that automatically overrides settings.

- Write down the current graphics settings so you can restore them.
- Lower detail and shadow quality first; these settings often change GPU workload without changing game rules.
- Temporarily lower resolution or switch between fullscreen and windowed mode.
- If a graphics companion application applies automatic optimization or an overlay, disable that behavior for the game and test again.
- Change one group of settings at a time and test the identical scene or save. Record whether the frame rate, stutter, or crash changes.
A setting change that improves frame rate identifies a workload problem, not necessarily a defective component. If lowering every visual setting has no effect on a slow simulation clock, stop treating the issue as a graphics problem and investigate CPU load, memory, mods, and the particular save.
Remove software conflicts one variable at a time
Temporarily disable mods
Mods can become incompatible after a game patch, depend on one another, or affect only a particular save. Disable all mods temporarily and start a new test or an unmodified save. If the symptom disappears, re-enable mods in small groups until the conflicting item is identified. Do not overwrite the only copy of a modded save while testing.
Close nonessential applications
Quit recording tools, overlays, browser windows with heavy workloads, hardware-monitoring utilities, and other nonessential applications. SEGA’s FAQ advises checking third-party software because an interaction can cause stutters or crashes even when the game itself is intact. Reproduce the problem after each major change rather than closing everything and losing the useful comparison.
Update the operating system, drivers, and power settings
Use Windows Update and the graphics processor manufacturer’s official update channel to check for current operating-system and graphics-driver updates. Restart after installation so the new driver is actually in use. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, note that timing and consult the game’s support guidance before attempting a rollback.
On a laptop, plug into AC power and confirm in the operating-system graphics settings that the game is assigned to the intended GPU. Battery modes can restrict power delivery. Heat can also make a laptop reduce CPU or GPU speed; in severe cases, thermal protection may contribute to a crash. Keep vents clear, avoid soft surfaces that block airflow, and test again after the machine has cooled.

Check memory, video memory, and storage conditions
SEGA Support’s PC Performance FAQ says that having less than 1 GB of free system memory while the game and other applications are running may lead to paging and repeated stutters. That is a general warning, not proof that memory is the cause on your computer. Close unnecessary programs and check available memory while the game is running. If the operating system is constantly paging, reducing background use or adding compatible system memory may help, but verify the game’s requirements and your computer’s upgrade limits first.

The same FAQ notes that selected settings may require more video memory and that higher resolution uses more VRAM. A game may automatically reduce settings to avoid an out-of-memory crash. Watch for that behavior, lower resolution or texture-related options, and compare the result with the graphics processor’s stated VRAM. Do not assume that adding system RAM supplies more VRAM; they are different resources.
Check the game drive’s health, free capacity, and background activity. A nearly full or unhealthy drive can make loading and paging behavior worse. Pause unnecessary transfers and indexing jobs while testing, but do not disable security protection permanently.
When an SSD is worth considering
Installing a game on an internal SSD or M.2 drive can reduce loading times. SEGA recommends SSD or M.2 storage for the best loading experience and also advises checking drive health, free space, and background tasks. This is a storage-latency recommendation: it does not establish that an SSD fixes crashes, low frame rate, or a simulation that advances slowly.
| Before buying | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Interface and form factor | Your computer must have a compatible 2.5-inch bay or M.2 slot and interface. |
| Capacity | The drive needs room for the game, updates, operating-system overhead, and free space. |
| Actual bottleneck | Storage is relevant to loading; CPU, GPU, VRAM, or system memory may be responsible for other symptoms. |
| Drive health | A healthy existing drive may not justify an upgrade if loading is already acceptable. |
Diagnose the symptom first. Do not purchase storage as a broad crash remedy.

Handle freezes, crashes, and startup errors safely
Use the exact error as the search term
A named error, loading percentage, or stage such as “Loading Graphics” is more useful than a general crash description. Search the game publisher’s official support site for that exact wording and your game version. Paradox Interactive’s Stellaris helpdesk, for example, separates graphics-device and startup-crash categories, allowing a title-specific procedure instead of a generic list.
Back up saves and mods before deleting data
Some support articles require removing a game-specific folder. One Hearts of Iron IV article for a particular “Loading Graphics” problem tells players to delete that game’s Documents folder and explicitly warns them to back up saves and mods first. Treat that as an instruction for that article and problem, not a universal repair. Copy saves and mod files to a separate location before deleting folders, clearing configuration data, or reinstalling.
Reinstall only after safer checks
Reinstallation can replace damaged program files, but it may not remove a conflicting mod, a corrupted configuration in a separate Documents folder, or a driver and hardware problem. Verify files, disable mods, update software, and follow the title’s support article first. If you do reinstall, confirm that saves are backed up and know which folders the title stores outside the launcher’s installation directory.
Separate a slow simulation from a slow computer
Grand strategy simulations can become more demanding as a campaign accumulates countries, units, characters, events, and calculations. If the interface remains responsive but in-game time advances slowly, compare a new unmodded campaign with the affected late save. A problem confined to one save points toward its contents or a mod; a problem in every campaign points more toward requirements, software, memory, or hardware. The comparison is diagnostic, not a guarantee of a particular cause.
Do not use a frame-rate counter alone to judge simulation speed. Record how long the same in-game interval takes at the same speed setting, and note whether pausing, zooming, or changing map views alters the result. Share those observations with support rather than reporting only that the game is “laggy.”
What to send support when the general sequence fails
Contact the game’s own support team when verification, updates, controlled settings, and a mod-free test do not resolve the problem. Riot Games’ general PC crash guidance recommends searching for the exact named error and attaching logs when seeking help; apply that process through the relevant game’s support system rather than treating Riot’s instructions as game-specific.
- Game title, edition, version, launcher, and operating system.
- CPU, graphics processor, VRAM, system memory, storage type, and laptop or desktop status.
- Exact error text, code, loading percentage, or crash stage.
- Whether the problem affects every save, one save, a new unmodded campaign, or only a particular map view.
- Recent game, operating-system, driver, or mod changes.
- Steps already tested and the result of each one.
- Logs or crash reports requested by the title’s support article.
SEGA Support summarizes the limitation of generic advice clearly: “Please keep in mind that since there are various configurations and individual expectations, we can only provide general guidelines for these issues.” That statement, from its PC Performance FAQ updated 10 March 2026, is why a reproducible test and complete system details matter more than trying unrelated fixes at random.
Quick Recap
A practical order of operations
- Classify the symptom: simulation speed, frame rate, stutter, loading, freeze, crash, or launch error.
- Record the game version, platform, hardware, save, mods, and recent changes.
- Compare the computer with the exact current requirements for that title and operating system.
- Verify the installation through the launcher.
- Test lower detail and shadows, resolution, window mode, and any automatic graphics optimizer.
- Disable mods and close nonessential third-party software.
- Install operating-system and graphics-driver updates; check laptop GPU selection, AC power, and heat.
- Check free system memory, VRAM pressure, drive health, free space, and background disk activity.
- Use official, title-specific instructions for named errors, backing up saves and mods before deleting data.
- Send a precise support report with logs when the controlled tests do not solve the issue.
