If a geomagnetic storm makes GPS or radio unreliable, stop treating an electronic reading as certain. Verify your position with signs, landmarks, a printed or downloaded map, and a compass you know how to use; switch to another communications method when one is available; keep monitoring official information through any working channel; and follow local emergency instructions. A storm can degrade GPS/GNSS accuracy or disrupt some radio links, but it will not affect every device, band, or location in the same way.
What a geomagnetic storm can actually disrupt
A geomagnetic storm is a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic environment driven by solar activity. One consequence is a changing ionosphere, the electrically active upper atmosphere through which satellite-navigation and some radio signals travel. The practical result is not a universal “GPS outage.” Depending on storm strength, location, signal geometry, and receiver, a device may show a larger position error, take longer to obtain a fix, lose lock intermittently, or continue working normally.

Two systems are often confused during a space-weather event:
Recommended Free Tools
| System | Why space weather matters | Possible symptom |
|---|---|---|
| GPS/GNSS | Signals pass through the ionosphere. Disturbed electron density can change the signal path and timing used to calculate position. | Inaccurate position, a drifting track, delayed fix, loss of lock, or a route that appears plausible but is wrong. |
| HF radio | High-frequency radio uses ionospheric propagation for many long-distance links. HF is the 1–30 MHz band. | Fading, intermittent audio, an unexpectedly short or long range, or a link that is blocked. |
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center says severe space-weather conditions can increase GPS positioning errors to tens of meters or more. That is a possible upper-end effect, not a promise that every receiver will be that inaccurate. HF disruption also depends on the frequency, path, time, and ionospheric conditions at both ends of the link.

First response: make uncertainty explicit
The safest first action is to label the electronic information as unverified. Do not continue into a hazardous turn, restricted area, waterway, mountain pass, or unfamiliar road merely because the screen displays a route.
- Slow down or stop in a safe place. Pull off the travel lane when possible. If you are operating a boat, aircraft, industrial vehicle, or other safety-critical system, use the applicable operating procedure rather than improvising.
- Compare independent cues. Check road signs, mile markers, landmarks, the direction of travel, and your last known position. A second app using the same receiver is not an independent confirmation.
- Use a prepared backup. Open a map downloaded before the event, consult a printed map, or use a compass if you can interpret it correctly. Offline maps can still contain mapping errors, so match them to visible features.
- Choose a conservative decision. If you cannot establish a safe route, remain in a known safe location and seek reliable local information instead of pressing on from a questionable fix.
These steps address the documented risk without assuming that the storm is definitely the cause. GPS.gov notes that blocked signals, receiver design, local interference, and mapping-software errors can produce similar symptoms.
How to navigate when GPS is unreliable
Use signs and landmarks before the screen
Road signs, route shields, building numbers, bridge names, trail markers, shoreline features, and other fixed references remain useful when satellite positioning is uncertain. Record the last confirmed location and direction before troubleshooting so you do not lose your known starting point.

Use an offline map correctly
A pre-downloaded map may continue to display roads without a data connection, but it does not guarantee a correct live position. Use it as a reference: identify the road or trail you can see, compare intersections and terrain, and estimate progress from time and distance. Keep a paper map for areas where a phone battery, screen, or software may fail.
Use a compass only with a usable reference
A magnetic compass can provide direction, not a complete position. Follow a known bearing only when you understand magnetic-versus-grid direction and local declination, and avoid relying on it near large metal structures or electrical equipment that can distort the needle. If you have not practiced with it, a compass is not a substitute for training.
Do not “reboot until it looks right”
Restarting a receiver may clear a software fault, but a fresh-looking fix is not proof of accuracy. If the position conflicts with physical evidence, treat the conflict as unresolved. On a safety-critical journey, use the navigation rules and alternate instruments required for that activity.

When radio reception fails
Determine what has failed before choosing a remedy. A single HF link may be affected while local VHF, cellular service, satellite messaging, or an internet connection still works. Conversely, a power outage or damaged infrastructure may explain a broad communications loss even when space weather is present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSwitch channels and methods
- Try another authorized frequency or service if your operating plan provides one.
- Use cellular voice or text, internet messaging, landline service, satellite communications, or an in-person relay when available and appropriate.
- For organized groups, use the prearranged check-in schedule and alternate contact order rather than repeatedly calling one failed channel.
- Keep transmissions brief so a marginal link has the best chance of carrying essential information.
HF propagation can fade, become intermittent, or be blocked when ionospheric density and structure change. Solar flares and energetic particles can also produce radio blackouts; those are distinct space-weather drivers, so not every HF failure should be attributed solely to a geomagnetic storm.
Use a receiver for information, not as a cure
A battery-powered or hand-crank emergency weather radio is useful when the electrical grid is down and can help you monitor broadcasts. It cannot restore an ionospheric path, improve GPS accuracy, or guarantee reception. If one station is unreadable, try another available broadcast and move to a location where the antenna has a clearer view, while recognizing that those steps may not overcome a propagation blackout.

Monitor official information through any working source
During an emergency, follow local authorities, emergency-management notices, and established community plans. The National Weather Service advises monitoring emergency broadcast radios after an extreme space-weather event. If radio is unavailable, use a working official website, text alert, phone call, public-safety announcement, or trusted local relay. Do not wait for a particular device or platform if a reliable alternative is available.
How to tell a storm effect from an ordinary equipment problem
Space-weather impacts are plausible when timing matches an official alert and multiple receivers or links show related symptoms, but correlation is not diagnosis. Check the simpler causes first:
- Signal blockage: tunnels, urban canyons, heavy foliage, terrain, or an indoor location can hide satellites.
- Receiver or antenna trouble: a damaged antenna, low battery, thermal problem, or firmware fault can affect one device.
- Local interference: nearby transmitters, faulty electronics, or an illegal jammer can overwhelm signals.
- Mapping or configuration errors: outdated map data, a wrong coordinate system, or an incorrect route profile can make a good position look wrong.
- Network or power failure: a cellular outage, dead router, or local grid problem can be unrelated to the ionosphere.
Compare the affected device with a second receiver, move to a clear location if safe, inspect power and antenna connections, and check whether the failure is limited to one service. Do not perform troubleshooting that would put you in danger or require disabling required safety equipment.

What NOAA’s space-weather scales tell you
NOAA’s scales describe expected levels of radio blackout, solar radiation, and geomagnetic activity. They are risk indicators, not a device-by-device forecast. A scale level does not specify that every phone, car, receiver, or region will fail.
| Information to consider | Why it changes your response |
|---|---|
| Storm or blackout severity | Higher levels generally mean greater potential for disruption, but local effects still vary. |
| Location and signal path | The same event can affect different regions and links differently because ionospheric conditions and geometry differ. |
| Service and frequency | GPS/GNSS, HF, VHF, cellular, and internet systems do not share identical propagation paths or failure modes. |
| Available backups | An offline map, printed contact list, alternate channel, spare power, and official-information source reduce dependence on one failing system. |
For scale context, NOAA estimates that an R1 radio-blackout category occurs about 2,000 times per solar cycle, while R5 is estimated at fewer than one occurrence per cycle. These are average frequencies used for the scale, not a forecast for your location and not a probability that a particular device will fail.
Prepare before the next event
Build a communications plan
The National Weather Service recommends a family communications plan for the possibility of power loss during an extreme event. Write down primary and alternate contacts, an out-of-area contact if your local plan uses one, meeting places, and the order in which people should check in. Store the information on paper as well as on phones.

- Download maps for the places you routinely travel.
- Carry a current paper map for long trips, remote work, or evacuation routes.
- Keep a basic compass and learn its operation before an emergency.
- Mark fuel, shelter, medical, and meeting locations on the paper map.
- Record the last known position and intended route when beginning a remote journey.
Plan for charging and power loss
Keep spare batteries, vehicle charging capability, or solar-powered or hand-crank charging options for phones and other small electronics, as recommended in NWS preparedness guidance. Test cables and connectors in advance. A charger preserves access to information and communications; it does not correct space-weather propagation.
Know which official sources apply
Before an event, identify your national space-weather service, local emergency-management office, weather-alert system, and activity-specific authority. U.S. readers can check NOAA/SWPC products and National Weather Service guidance during an active event. Readers elsewhere should use their own national and local authorities, whose alert thresholds and instructions may differ.
A practical decision path during an active storm
- Protect immediate safety. Stop driving, boating, hiking, or operating equipment if uncertain navigation creates a direct hazard.
- Confirm the symptom. Compare the GPS display or radio link with physical cues and another available device or service.
- Classify the failure. Decide whether it is one receiver, one frequency, one network, or a broader loss of power and communications.
- Move to the best available backup. Use signs, landmarks, offline or paper maps, an alternate channel, or another communications method.
- Obtain authoritative information. Monitor any working official source and follow local instructions.
- Document and reassess. Note the time, location, device, frequency, and symptoms. Recheck only when conditions are safe; do not let repeated failed attempts replace a conservative decision.
Important limits to remember
A geomagnetic storm does not guarantee a GPS outage, and a working GPS display does not prove that its error is small. Radio disruption is not identical across all bands, and an emergency radio is not a propagation repair. NOAA’s alerts communicate expected risk; they cannot predict the exact behavior of every receiver at every location. When electronic information conflicts with the physical world, safety depends on resolving that conflict rather than choosing the more convenient reading.
