If a game freezes on Windows 10 or 11, first try to restore the display with Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If Windows still responds, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end the game’s task. Hold the power button to force a restart only when the computer itself is unresponsive; unsaved work may be lost.
First identify what has frozen
A stuck game does not always mean the whole PC has stopped responding. If the screen is black or frozen, try the graphics-driver reset shortcut before forcing a shutdown. If Windows responds to keyboard shortcuts, close only the game. Reserve a power-button restart for a computer that is genuinely unresponsive.

Try to recover the display
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft lists this shortcut for resetting the graphics driver when troubleshooting a blank screen. The display may flicker or the PC may beep if the reset works. If the screen returns, save any work you can before taking further steps. Close the game with Task Manager
- Open Task Manager: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select the game: find its entry or process in Task Manager.
- End the task: choose End task for the game, not unrelated Windows processes.
This is Steam’s recommended method for forcing a silently crashed or hanging game to close. If Task Manager opens but is hidden behind the full-screen game, the steps cited here do not establish a workaround that will work in every display setup. Avoid repeatedly issuing commands without being able to see what they affect. If ending the task fails, move on to restarting the PC. Steam’s hanging-game instructions cover the Task Manager method.

Restart Windows only if the PC is unresponsive
If the display-reset shortcut and Task Manager do not work and Windows itself is not responding, hold the power button to force the computer off, then turn it on again. Microsoft includes a forced restart as a step in its blank-screen guidance. This can discard unsaved work, so use it only after less disruptive options have failed. A forced restart may get the PC running again, but it does not identify why the freeze happened.
If the game keeps freezing
Update Windows, the game, and the graphics driver
Install available Windows and game updates. Then check for a graphics-driver update through the PC maker’s or graphics-card manufacturer’s supported update route. Riot Games identifies outdated graphics drivers as a possible cause of freezes and black screens. An update may help, but no single update is guaranteed to fix every freeze. Reduce graphics settings if the PC is near the game’s minimum requirements
If the computer is close to a game’s minimum specifications, lower its graphics settings and see whether the problem recurs. EA recommends reducing settings in that situation. This is a practical adjustment to test, not proof that hardware limits are the cause. EA’s graphics troubleshooting guide explains its advice.

If the PC restarts or crashes outside the game as well, note any error message or stop code. Unexpected Windows restarts can involve hardware, a device driver, or software; Microsoft’s follow-up guidance includes driver checks and Safe Mode troubleshooting. Use Microsoft’s unexpected-restart and stop-code guidance to choose next steps rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns.
