If a foldable’s hinge is jammed, visibly bent, cracked, separating, or the inner display has gone black, stop opening and closing it and keep pressure off the affected area. Photograph the damage, record exactly what still works, back up data if the phone remains usable, then ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider to assess the exact model in your country. Coverage and prices depend on the device, purchase date, damage and local service terms; a generic promise that a hinge or inner-screen failure is covered is not reliable.
First, make the phone safe
A foldable combines a flexible display, protective layers, cables and a mechanical hinge in a very small assembly. A symptom that looks like a software freeze can also be a damaged display connection or hinge. Treat the device as a hardware fault until the manufacturer says otherwise.

- Crack, bent hinge or separating display: stop folding immediately. Do not press the crease, push the screen back into place, peel a film or try to straighten the hinge.
- Black inner screen: leave the phone in the position that is safest for the hinge. Do not repeatedly cycle it open and shut to test it.
- Flickering, lines or a spot near the crease: avoid pressure and arrange an inspection, even if the outer display still works.
- Heat, smell, swelling or liquid exposure: power the phone off if you can do so safely, keep it away from flammable materials and tell the service center exactly what happened.
Do not attempt a generic screen replacement. Foldable parts and disassembly procedures vary by model, and an incorrect repair can damage the hinge, display layers or water-resistance seals.

Note when the problem began, whether it is constant or intermittent, whether touch and speakers work, and whether the outer screen still responds. Those details help a service center distinguish a display complaint from a hinge or mainboard problem.

What to do before sending the phone for repair
- Document the condition. Write down the exact model and storage version, the date and circumstances of failure, and any drop, liquid exposure or previous repair. Take clear photographs of the front, back, hinge, crease and any cracks. Keep copies of error messages or a short video showing the fault.
- Back up while the phone still works. Use the manufacturer’s cloud or computer backup. A repair can involve a factory reset or replacement of the device, so do not assume data will remain. If the phone cannot stay powered on, tell the provider before authorizing work rather than repeatedly trying to revive it.
- Follow the maker’s intake checklist. Motorola India says its repair center erases data and recommends backing up, erasing the phone, removing the Google account, and leaving out the SIM, SD card and accessories (Motorola India repair options). Motorola’s EMEA guidance likewise recommends backing up and erasing before mail-in service (Motorola EMEA repair options). Samsung’s cited Galaxy Z Fold2 terms require a backup and SIM removal and state that Samsung is not responsible for on-screen accessories left attached (Samsung Malaysia Galaxy Z Fold2 Premier Service Terms and Conditions). Requirements differ, so ask the provider if you cannot complete a reset.
- Record account and security details separately. Make sure you know the screen lock and account credentials needed after service, but do not send passwords in an email or package. Remove payment cards and authentication tokens where the phone remains usable.
- Check coverage before approving paid work. Have the IMEI, proof of purchase if available, model, country and purchase date ready. Ask whether the proposed inspection is free and whether shipping or diagnostic fees apply if coverage is denied.
How warranty and protection decisions usually work
A warranty decision is separate from a diagnosis. The manufacturer must examine the actual device, and the same black screen can be treated differently depending on evidence of impact, liquid or unauthorized repair.

For a general overview of Pixel repair and warranty routes, Google’s Repair & Warranty Learning Center directs owners to the appropriate process. Keep the written assessment if coverage is refused. Ask the provider to state the reason, the part being replaced and whether a paid repair will carry a repair warranty.

Start the correct repair channel
Manufacturer or authorized service
Use the maker’s support site or an authorized center for the exact model and country. Google says Pixel options depend on device, warranty status and location; where available, owners may choose walk-in or mail-in service. Google describes mail-in repair as usually taking 7–10 business days, an estimate rather than a guarantee for every foldable, country or parts situation (Google Pixel device repair).
When opening a case, provide the symptom description and photographs rather than selecting a vague “screen issue.” Request a written quote that separates parts, labor, shipping, tax and any inspection fee. Confirm whether the replacement is new or refurbished, whether the hinge and inner panel will be assessed together, and what happens if additional damage is found after disassembly.

Independent repair shop
A reputable independent shop may be useful after warranty or protection coverage ends, but quality and parts supply are not uniform. Before handing over the phone, verify:
- the shop has repaired your exact model and regional variant, not merely another foldable;
- the quoted part includes the complete inner display and hinge-related components needed for that model;
- parts are genuine or clearly identified as compatible alternatives;
- your data-handling, diagnostic and reset policy is written down;
- the turnaround, shipping responsibility and post-repair warranty are explicit; and
- an independent repair will not void a remaining manufacturer warranty or protection plan.
Compare an authorized and independent quote on coverage eligibility, exact-part compatibility, total cost, parts provenance, turnaround, data handling and repair warranty. There is no reliable cross-brand price or quality ranking from the available manufacturer information.

How much might repair cost?
Without the model and country, a precise number would be misleading. A covered defect may cost nothing or involve a service fee; accidental damage commonly becomes an out-of-warranty quote. The final amount can change after inspection if the hinge, frame, inner display and cables have different damage. Shipping, taxes and diagnostic charges may also be separate.
The RM600 Samsung Malaysia Galaxy Z Fold2 benefit is the only specific amount in the cited terms, and it applies only to that dated Malaysian program. Google’s online Pixel tool can show an estimated cost after you enter the IMEI and issue, while Motorola says its center determines the out-of-warranty price. Treat all online estimates as conditional until the service provider confirms them in writing.

DIY repair: why a foldable is a poor first project
Motorola EMEA links to online kits containing genuine Motorola parts and tools, but says difficulty varies by model and damage and advises using the DIY option only for out-of-warranty devices because repair damage can affect standard warranty coverage (Motorola EMEA repair guidance). That documentation does not establish a kit for every Razr model, nor does it make a universal foldable-screen replacement procedure.
A failed hinge or inner display is especially unsuitable for a generic toolkit or an unverified video guide. The inner panel can be punctured by pressure, adhesive layers can delaminate, and a misaligned hinge can damage a replacement screen on the first fold. Choose DIY only when the manufacturer lists a kit for your exact model and you accept the loss of coverage and the risk of making the device unrecoverable. Otherwise, use authorized assessment.
Questions to ask before you authorize work
- Is the reported fault being classified as a defect, accidental damage, liquid damage or cosmetic damage?
- Which component will be replaced: inner display, hinge assembly, frame, cable or the complete device?
- What is the total price including inspection, labor, parts, shipping and tax?
- Will the repair erase data, and can the provider preserve data if the phone cannot be backed up?
- Is the replacement part genuine, and what repair warranty applies?
- What happens if the quoted repair reveals additional damage?
- Will the repaired phone retain the original warranty or protection-plan status?
Keep the estimate, intake photographs, tracking number and final invoice. Test both displays, touch across the crease, cameras, speakers, charging, biometric unlock and several gentle open-close cycles before accepting the phone. Stop immediately if the hinge binds, the screen lifts or new lines appear, and report it under the repair warranty.

Ask for a replacement-device option when the frame is bent, liquid damage affects multiple components, parts are unavailable or the repair quote approaches the value of an equivalent phone. A replacement can also be safer when the hinge has damaged the inner panel repeatedly. Compare the replacement’s warranty, data transfer process, model and storage with the proposed repair; do not assume a replacement is new unless the provider says so.
What information support needs from you
Have these details ready in one message: manufacturer, exact model and region, IMEI, purchase date, country, warranty or protection-plan name, symptom timeline, whether the outer display and touch work, visible damage, liquid or drop history, previous repairs, backup status and your preferred walk-in or mail-in option. This prevents a generic answer and lets the service team quote the correct part and route.
