Do not factory-reset the lock as a first response, because a reset can remove entry codes and other configured access.
The exact button sequence, battery type, enrollment count and backup options vary by model. The instructions below separate general checks from procedures documented for specific eufy, Lockly and Yale products.

Start with a way to unlock the door
Before testing the scanner repeatedly, use an alternate method your lock actually supports. Depending on the model, that may be an access code, the manufacturer’s app or a supplied physical key. eufy documents code, app and key alternatives on supported locks, but those options are not universal. If you are outside, avoid changing settings until you have a reliable way back in.

1. Clean the finger and scanner
Prepare your finger
Fingerprint readers need a clear ridge pattern and consistent contact. Wash or wipe away dirt, grease and excess moisture, then dry the finger. A wet finger can blur the ridges; heavy residue can prevent the sensor from reading them. Very dry or cracked skin can also change the contact pattern. If one finger is unreliable, try another finger that is already enrolled.

Clean the sensor safely
Inspect the reader for dust, skin oil, water or smudges. Wipe it gently with a clean, dry, soft or lint-free cloth, following the lock maker’s cleaning instructions. Do not pour liquid onto the reader or scrape it with a sharp object. Lockly specifically advises keeping its sensor free from dirt and smudges; eufy identifies a dirty or wet finger and sensor contamination as causes of recognition failure.
2. Improve placement and contact
Place the center of the finger pad over the sensing area so the reader is fully covered. Keep the finger flat and still rather than tapping, sliding or touching with only the fingertip. Wait for the lock’s light or sound confirmation before removing it.
For Lockly Secure Plus and Secure Pro guidance, Lockly says to hold the finger still for more than a second until a beep. That timing applies to those models; other locks may signal readiness differently. If the reader is recessed, align the finger with the marked area instead of the surrounding trim.
3. Confirm that the finger is enrolled on this lock
Check the exact finger and user profile
A fingerprint stored on a different lock, a replacement lock or another user profile does not automatically work on this device. Use the app or administrative menu to verify that the finger is listed for this particular lock. If the lock was recently reset, its previous biometric records may no longer exist.

Enroll again only after you have backup access
Follow the model’s enrollment sequence exactly, including the number of scans and any prompts to lift or reposition the finger. Lockly’s Secure Plus and Secure Pro instructions require six successful scans to register a fingerprint. That is a product-specific count, not an industry standard. Lockly also recommends enrolling more than one finger, including a finger from each hand, so a cut, swollen knuckle or temporary skin change does not leave you without biometric access.
Do not enroll over a cut, scar or severely peeling area if another eligible finger is available. After enrollment, test the new print while the door remains open and keep the code or key nearby until you have confirmed reliable operation.
4. Check batteries and power symptoms
Look for the lock’s low-battery light, voice prompt, app warning or sluggish motor. A fingerprint scanner can fail even when some other electronics still appear active. eufy states that its scanner fails when the smart lock loses power. Replace cells only with the type and orientation specified for your exact model, and follow the manual’s replacement steps so the lock is not left unsecured during the change.
A Lockly support result recommends fresh AA batteries for the model covered by that guidance. Do not generalize that recommendation to every Lockly product or to another brand; confirm the cell type in your lock’s manual. If the lock has an emergency power terminal or external backup connection, use it only as described by the maker.

5. Account for rain and other environmental conditions
Moisture can affect both the finger and the sensing surface. eufy documents cases in which its scanner fails during rainy conditions and directs owners to use a password, app or key as alternatives. Move under cover, dry the finger and reader, and test again when the surface is clear. Avoid sealing, heating or spraying the sensor unless the manufacturer specifically approves that treatment.
Cold weather, gloves and changes in skin condition can also make placement inconsistent, but the supplied manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal temperature limit. If the problem happens only in a particular environment, record that pattern for support rather than assuming the sensor needs replacement.
6. Restart the lock using the documented method
A restart can clear a temporary electronics or app communication fault without deleting stored fingerprints. The correct sequence is model-specific, so do not combine instructions from different products.
eufy app message: “Fingerprint scan failed”
eufy support instructs owners of the covered models to hold the front-bottom reboot button for three seconds until a sound is heard. After the restart, test an existing fingerprint, then clean the finger and button if the scan still fails. Use that procedure only if your lock has the same button and the manual identifies it as a reboot control.

Lockly restart guidance
Lockly’s support result for its covered lock describes a five-second restart through the hole between two rounded terminals. It distinguishes this action from a reset. Because the referenced page is model-specific, confirm the location and timing in your lock’s manual before pressing anything.
Restart is not factory reset
A restart normally preserves configuration; a factory reset deliberately removes it. Yale warns that resetting its keypad erases associated entry codes. Treat any instruction containing “reset,” “initialize” or “restore defaults” as potentially destructive, and preserve a working code, app connection or physical key first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Stop before a timeout or lockout
Repeated guesses can create a longer delay without improving recognition. Yale says its Smart Fingerprint Keypad enters a five-minute timeout after five incorrect fingerprint attempts. If your lock signals a timeout, stop testing, wait for the stated period and use the backup method. The number and duration may differ on other models.
When the symptom points to the app or electronics
The app fails but the reader still responds
Test an enrolled finger at the lock itself if the hardware gives a normal light or sound. If the physical reader works while the app reports an error, follow the maker’s app-specific reboot and connection instructions rather than deleting the lock from your account. Record the exact error wording before changing settings.

The reader is silent or completely unresponsive
Prioritize power checks and the manual’s emergency-entry method. If fresh, correctly installed batteries do not restore the expected lights or sounds, stop disassembling the lock. The available guidance does not establish a universal consumer procedure for replacing a fingerprint sensor, connector or control board.
What to give support if it still will not recognize you
Contact the manufacturer after cleaning, checking enrollment, verifying power and completing the documented restart. Include:
- Exact model name and hardware revision, if shown on the inside escutcheon, battery compartment or app.
- Whether the failure affects one enrolled finger or every enrolled user.
- Any light color, beep pattern, spoken message or app error.
- Whether the issue began after rain, a battery change, a firmware update, a reset or physical impact.
- The battery type and approximate age, without guessing if you are unsure.
- Each step already attempted, including the model-specific restart.
Keep the door accessible through the code, app or supplied key while support investigates. Do not ship or remove the lock until the maker explains how access will be preserved.
Recommended Free Tools
Prevent the next failed scan
- Enroll at least one additional finger when the lock allows it, and include a finger from the other hand.
- Keep the sensor dry and free of smudges; use a soft, dry cloth rather than abrasive materials.
- Store the exact manual and battery specification with the lock’s other access information.
- Test the backup code, app and key before you need them, especially after changing batteries or user permissions.
- When a lock reports a timeout, wait out the product’s interval instead of continuing attempts.
The safest progression is therefore simple: preserve alternate entry, clean and reposition, verify enrollment, check power and weather, perform only the documented restart, and escalate before a factory reset or hardware repair.
