First check whether the player’s game has actually started and what kind of lineup lock your league uses. If the slot is still editable, replace the player with an eligible option whose game has not started. If it is locked, check whether your platform’s automatic-substitution feature applies; otherwise, ask your commissioner what the league’s existing rules allow. A commissioner may be able to adjust a roster in some leagues, but an exception is not guaranteed.
What to do right now
- Check the player’s actual game time. Open your roster and confirm whether that game has started. The time you saw the news is not the same as the player’s lock time.
- Check whether the slot is editable. “Lineup lock” can mean that each player locks at the start of their own game, or that the whole lineup locks when the first game of a period begins. Your league’s setting determines which applies.
- If the slot is open, make a legal substitution. Choose a player eligible for that roster position whose game has not started, then confirm that the change saved.
- If the slot is locked, check automatic-substitution settings. These features are optional or limited, and a player being ruled out does not necessarily trigger a replacement.
- If no automatic move applies, contact the commissioner promptly. Ask what the league’s established post-lock rule permits. Do not assume the commissioner can or will reopen the slot; consistent treatment of all managers matters.
Why a ruled-out player may remain in your lineup
A player’s status and your lineup’s lock status are separate. A late injury announcement does not itself unlock a slot. Depending on the league, a player may lock individually at game time, or the entire lineup may become uneditable when the first game of the day or week starts. ESPN documents both approaches in its lineup and roster lock settings.

That distinction also affects a possible replacement: another player may be usable only if their own game has not started and your league still permits the move. Check your league settings rather than relying on a rule from another platform or league.

These are platform examples, not one universal fantasy rule. League configuration and the current season’s rules control what is possible in your league.

When an automatic replacement can work
ESPN Lineup Protection
Lineup Protection is optional and narrow: the starter must be designated “Out” or “IL,” and a bench player must be both eligible for that slot and available. A questionable designation or an unexpected inactive announcement does not necessarily meet those conditions. Confirm that the feature was enabled and that the backup qualifies.
NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives
NFL Fantasy says teams designate players inactive “about 90 minutes before the game is scheduled to start” if they are unable to play. That is approximate timing, not a guarantee that all late news will arrive then. Auto-Swap Inactives applies only to players projected to score zero and starts the top-ranked player in the Backups list, so check your backup ordering and do not treat it as an optimizer.

If the roster is locked and no swap happened
Use the league’s normal channel to contact the commissioner, explain which player and slot are affected, and ask whether the written or established league rules allow a change. On ESPN, its support instructions specify that only the League Manager can make roster changes on a manager’s behalf after a player locks. That documents who can make an ESPN adjustment, not an entitlement to one; the league’s fairness rules still govern.

How to reduce the chance of a repeat
- Review the league’s lock setting before the next slate: individual game starts and first-game-of-the-period locks create different deadlines.
- Enable any available automatic replacement feature before games, then verify its qualifying statuses, eligibility rules, and backup priority.
- Keep an eligible bench alternative available when possible, and check whether that player’s game is still in the future before relying on them.
- For NFL fantasy, monitor official inactive announcements close to kickoff. NFL Fantasy’s stated inactive window is about 90 minutes before scheduled game time, but late updates can still matter.
- Know the commissioner’s post-lock policy before a late scratch occurs, so any adjustment is handled consistently across the league.
