Do not treat an “unknown,” “conflicting,” or “no match” DNA result as a diagnosis, proof of identity, or final relationship answer. First save the complete report and verify the sample, test type, markers and comparison used. Then ask the original provider for a technical review. If the finding could affect medical care, obtain clinician-ordered confirmation from an appropriate clinical laboratory before changing treatment or screening. Relationship, ancestry and forensic results require different standards for identity, databases, statistics and legal admissibility.
“No test is 100% accurate,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says. A disagreement between companies does not, by itself, show which report is correct: providers can test different variants or markers and apply different interpretation rules.

Start with the result you actually received
The word match is used for several unrelated outputs. An “unknown” health finding may mean a variant cannot yet be classified. An ancestry service may be unable to assign a segment confidently. A relative tool may show too little shared DNA for a reliable relationship estimate. A paternity or forensic report may say “no match,” “exclusion,” or “partial,” each with a different technical meaning.
Health or variant report
This report evaluates selected genes or variants associated with disease risk, carrier status or medication response. It is not the same as a clinical diagnosis. Consumer tests may examine only some variants, and the company may interpret the same variant differently from a clinical laboratory.

Ancestry estimate
Ancestry percentages are statistical estimates based on a provider’s reference populations and algorithm. A changed percentage, an unassigned segment or a missing regional label can reflect a database or algorithm update rather than a change in your DNA.
Relative or kinship match
A relative tool compares shared genetic segments and estimates possible relationships. The estimate depends on the markers tested, the amount of DNA shared, the reference database and which relatives are included. “Unknown” commonly means the available evidence does not support a confident relationship label.
Paternity, immigration or forensic profile
These tests use a defined relationship or identity model and require stronger controls over who supplied the sample. A consumer match is not automatically legal proof of paternity or identity. Legal use can require an accredited laboratory, witnessed collection, documented chain of custody and procedures accepted in the relevant jurisdiction.

- Pause before acting. Do not change medication, screening, diet or treatment because of an uncertain consumer result. The FDA describes direct-to-consumer findings as one layer of information, not a sole basis for medical decisions.
- Download the complete record. Save the full report, not only the summary screen. Include the exact wording, provider name, report version and date, tested genes or markers, confidence or likelihood figures, kit or sample ID and collection date. Keep screenshots in case the online result changes.
- Confirm whose sample was tested. Check the kit number, account, name, birth date and collection record. Ask whether the laboratory received enough DNA and whether a redraw was requested.
- Identify the test category. Write down whether the result concerns health, ancestry, a relative, paternity, immigration or a forensic investigation. The correct follow-up depends on that classification.
- Do not upload raw data elsewhere yet. A downloaded file may no longer receive the original provider’s privacy protections, and third-party interpretations can be difficult to evaluate.
Why two DNA services can disagree
Different markers or genes
Companies do not necessarily test the same parts of the genome. One may include a variant that another does not, or use a different marker set for relationship matching. A negative result on one platform therefore cannot automatically disprove a positive result on another.
Different laboratory methods and quality thresholds
DNA quantity, contamination, degraded material, a failed swab or a sample mix-up can affect a result. Ask the provider whether quality-control checks passed and whether the sample was processed in the intended batch.

Different interpretation rules
Even when the underlying data overlap, algorithms can classify variants, estimate ancestry or calculate relationships differently. Reference populations, relationship models and statistical thresholds are not universal.
Database and software changes
A new reference database or algorithm can add, remove or relabel a match without any new sample. Ask which version produced the report and whether a recent update changed the result.

Insufficient evidence
“Unknown” often means the available evidence falls below the provider’s confidence threshold. It is not equivalent to “false,” “negative” or “not related.”
A practical resolution process
1. Ask the original provider for a technical review
Use the provider’s support channel and attach the saved report. Request confirmation that the correct sample was received and processed. Ask specifically about contamination, low DNA quantity, sample swaps, failed markers, software or database updates, and whether a redraw or retest is available.
For a health report, ask which genes and variants were tested and whether the finding is based on a directly measured variant or an inferred result. For a relationship report, ask which markers, relationship model, reference population and confidence or likelihood calculation were used.

2. Request the underlying explanation in writing
Ask the company to define “unknown,” “conflicting,” “no match,” “not detected” and any confidence category used in your report. Keep the response with your original files. If the provider corrects a report, save both the original and corrected versions with their dates.

A repeat sample can address collection or sample-quality problems. An independent clinical laboratory can confirm a medically important variant. A genetic counselor can explain health implications and options. A legal or forensic laboratory must follow identity and chain-of-custody requirements when the result may be presented to an agency or court.
4. Include the right people
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says genetic counseling after testing helps people understand what results mean and what to do next. MedlinePlus notes that company support or a healthcare professional may help explain results. For a medical concern, involve a physician or genetic counselor; for a legal or forensic matter, involve the responsible authority or a qualified attorney in the applicable jurisdiction.
5. Recheck only after defining the problem
Retesting can be useful when the first sample failed, the provider confirms a technical issue or a clinical professional specifies a different test. Ordering multiple consumer tests without knowing which markers or methods differ can produce more conflicting labels without resolving the underlying question.
When the result concerns your health
Consumer findings need clinical context
A consumer report may identify a risk-associated variant, fail to detect a variant that another test reports, or assign a result as “unknown.” None of those outcomes should independently determine treatment. A family history, symptoms, physical examination and a clinically validated test may change the interpretation.

Get confirmatory testing before medical intervention
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states: “When a patient presents with a direct-to-consumer test result, medical intervention typically should wait for confirmatory testing in a clinical laboratory.” The Jackson Laboratory likewise lists consumer testing, unclear interpretation and possible impact on patient care among reasons confirmation may be needed.
Bring the complete consumer report to the clinician rather than quoting a single variant name. Ask whether the proposed clinical test covers the same gene and variant, uses an appropriate laboratory method and is intended to answer your specific medical question.
Understand a VUS
A variant of uncertain significance (VUS) is a finding for which available evidence is insufficient or conflicting. It is not proof that you have a disease, and it is not proof that the variant is harmless. Do not use a VUS alone to choose medication, preventive surgery, intensified screening or testing of relatives. Classification can change as scientific evidence develops, so ask the responsible clinical team how any future reinterpretation will be communicated.

Ancestry percentages are estimates
Different reference populations and algorithms can produce different regional percentages. An “unassigned” segment does not establish that a family story is false, and a newly assigned region does not prove a specific ancestor. Compare the provider’s methodology and reference-population description before comparing the percentages themselves.
Relative labels are hypotheses
A match can be a close relative, a more distant relative or, in some cases, a technical artifact. Ask how much DNA is shared, how many segments were detected, whether the match is phased or triangulated with known relatives and what relationship model was applied. If a proposed parent or sibling is unavailable, testing a close relative may provide an alternative relationship comparison, but a professional should select and interpret that strategy.
Consent matters
Do not publish another person’s genetic information or use a relative’s data for a new purpose without consent. A match may reveal unexpected family relationships, so discuss sensitive findings privately and avoid contacting additional relatives until you understand the evidence and privacy implications.
When the result concerns paternity or a legal case
“No match” is not always the end of the question
A non-positive relationship result can have alternatives, including testing the wrong alleged parent, testing a close relative instead of the alleged parent, an undocumented sample problem or an incorrect relationship model. Ask the laboratory what was excluded, which markers were informative and whether additional people or markers could resolve the result.
Legal admissibility requires controlled procedures
The National Institute of Justice distinguishes match, exclusion and no or partial results and notes that additional testing may be needed. For court, immigration or official identity use, verify the laboratory’s applicable accreditation, witnessed identity checks, collection method, chain of custody, statistical statement and jurisdictional acceptance before testing. A home-collected recreational kit may not satisfy those requirements even if its genetic comparison is technically accurate.

Turnaround time, price, data retention and exact accreditation are not uniform; obtain current terms directly from the selected provider and confirm that they fit your purpose before sending a sample.
Protect your genetic data while troubleshooting
Before downloading or uploading raw DNA, read the provider’s current terms for retention, deletion, research sharing, law-enforcement access, security, account closure and consent withdrawal. MedlinePlus warns that downloaded data may no longer be protected by the original provider. A third-party interpretation site may also retain a copy, use an opaque algorithm or make claims you cannot independently assess.
- Use a unique password and multi-factor authentication where available.
- Share the minimum file and identifiers needed for the stated purpose.
- Ask whether a support ticket will include your raw data or only the report.
- Keep a private record of who received the result and when.
- Obtain consent before sharing a relative’s result or discussing an identifiable match publicly.
If the provider cannot resolve it
Ask for a written explanation, correction or escalation path. For a medical concern, take the complete record to a clinician or genetic counselor and request an appropriate confirmatory test. For a legal or forensic concern, contact the responsible agency or a qualified attorney before repeating the test. If the issue is a suspected privacy breach, use the provider’s privacy-contact and complaint procedures and preserve relevant correspondence.
The safest interpretation remains narrow: an unknown or conflicting result shows that the available test, sample or comparison did not establish a reliable answer for your purpose. Preserve the evidence, identify the correct standard, obtain qualified interpretation and act only on a result that has been confirmed at the level your decision requires.
