First identify the platform, storefront, country, exact edition and purchasing account. Then check the account’s purchase history, receipt, library, hidden items and installed software. A game disappearing from sale does not automatically mean previous buyers have lost redownload access, while a working redownload does not guarantee that online features still operate. Use the platform’s current support procedure, and contact the seller if the purchase is missing, the download fails or the game is unavailable contrary to the purchase terms.
Refund eligibility depends on the storefront, purchase date, download or streaming status, whether the content is faulty, and local law. Keep your receipt and error details while you work through the checks below.

Determine what actually changed
“No longer available” can describe several different events. Correctly identifying the event prevents you from requesting the wrong remedy.
The game was delisted from sale
A delisting removes the game from a store’s public catalog. It may still remain attached to accounts that bought it previously. Some storefronts preserve a private library entitlement even after new sales stop. Do not infer the redownload status from the missing store listing alone; confirm it with the platform’s support documentation or support team.

The download service ended
A platform or publisher can stop delivering installation files, close an account system, change regions or end a licensing arrangement. In that case, a previous purchase may still appear in transaction history but no longer produce a downloadable file. The notice should identify the affected platform, dates and content, although the wording and remedies vary.
The download works but the game’s online service ended
Downloading and playing locally are separate from online play, authentication, multiplayer and other server functions. A title can remain downloadable while network features are disabled. Conversely, an installed copy can stop launching if it requires a server that has been retired. Treat access to the file, ability to install or launch, and continued operation of online features as three separate questions.
Record the facts before changing anything
Write down the details support staff will need. This also preserves evidence if a refund or consumer-rights claim becomes necessary.

- Storefront and country in which you made the purchase.
- Account email or account identifier, without sharing your password.
- Purchase date, order number and the email receipt.
- Whether you previously downloaded, installed, streamed or launched the game.
- What the store now displays: a purchase button, a price, “Purchased,” an error or no listing.
- The complete error text, code and the date and time it appeared.
- Any official delisting, shutdown, region or licensing notice.
Take screenshots of the library entry and error, and keep copies of support replies. Do not delete an installed copy while investigating; an installed game may be your only working local copy if the download service later changes.

Verify the account that owns the purchase
Digital ownership is normally tied to the account that completed the transaction, not merely to the console, computer or family member who used it. Sign out and back in if necessary, then compare the account identifier with the receipt. Check purchase history or transaction history rather than relying only on a search result in the store.
Check the complete library
Open the library’s full list, not only the current store page. Look for archived, hidden, uninstalled or previously purchased sections. Search by the exact edition and publisher name; a bundle may be listed under the bundle’s title while its individual game is absent from the main catalog. If the game is already installed, launch it from the system’s software list and note whether the problem is downloading, licensing or connecting to a service.
When the store shows a price
A price on a previously purchased title can indicate that you are using a different account, a different regional storefront or a different edition. Compare the receipt’s account and product identifier with the account currently signed in. Do not buy the title again until support has confirmed that the original entitlement is missing; a second purchase can complicate a refund request.
Use the platform’s official redownload procedure
Instructions differ by platform. A procedure for one console cannot establish what another storefront supports, so use the help page for the exact system and region.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo’s support guidance says software marked “Purchased” belongs to the Nintendo Account currently in use. Its troubleshooting path is to open All Software, locate the title and load the corresponding virtual game card. If the software or virtual game card was hidden, unhide it and check the library again. If the title shows a price, Nintendo advises checking purchase history or the receipt and confirming that the purchasing Nintendo Account is signed in.
These steps apply to Nintendo’s current systems; they do not describe PlayStation, Xbox, Steam or any other storefront. If the title is absent after checking All Software, virtual game cards and hidden items, give Nintendo Support the transaction details and ask whether the entitlement remains attached to the account.
Other storefronts
For another platform, open its official account, library and purchase-history support pages. Look for a redownload or restore-purchases command, and follow the current labels exactly. If the game is missing from both the library and transaction history, support must first resolve ownership. If it appears in the library but the download fails, provide the error code and ask whether delivery files are still hosted for previous buyers.

- New sales only, or both sales and redownloads.
- A complete storefront closure or only a change in catalog availability.
- Online multiplayer, authentication or other server functions.
- Account migration, a changed login system or a regional storefront move.
- A country-specific licensing restriction.
- A publisher decision affecting one edition, add-on or platform but not others.
Dates matter. A notice can promise redownloads only for a stated period or use qualified language such as “for the foreseeable future.” Do not treat that wording as a permanent guarantee. Likewise, an online-service shutdown date does not automatically prove that installation files were removed.
What the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS example shows
Nintendo ended Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop sales on March 27, 2023. In its Wii U & Nintendo 3DS eShop Discontinuation Q&A, Nintendo stated: “Even after March 27, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” The qualification “for the foreseeable future” does not promise permanent availability.
The same notice says: “As of April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication has ended for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family software.” Thus, the sales shutdown and the online-communication shutdown were different events. A buyer could still redownload eligible software while losing online functionality.

Contact support with a precise request
Once you have checked the account and library, contact the storefront or seller. Include the platform, country, account identifier, order number, purchase date, exact edition, error text and whether you downloaded or installed the game before. Attach the receipt and screenshots, but remove passwords, payment-card numbers and security codes.
Ask support to answer separate questions rather than simply saying that the game is “unavailable”:
- Is the purchase still attached to this account?
- Is redownload of this exact edition supported for previous buyers in my country?
- Is the failure caused by a hidden item, virtual game card, account mismatch, region restriction or a delivery-service shutdown?
- Can you provide the current steps to restore the download?
- If redownload is no longer possible, what refund, replacement or other remedy is available under the storefront terms?
Request a case number and save the response. If the first reply addresses only new sales, restate that you are asking about access to an existing purchase and include the transaction proof.
Refund rules are conditional
PlayStation’s published US example
PlayStation’s US support policy for full games, downloadable content and season passes generally requires a refund request within 14 days of purchase and no download or streaming. The policy lists an exception where the content is faulty and notes that buyers may have additional rights under applicable local law. This is a PlayStation US example, not a universal rule: another storefront, country, product type or purchase date may use different conditions.
If you have already downloaded or streamed the game, do not assume the standard 14-day route applies. Explain the fault or loss of access and ask support to assess the case under its exception and any local requirements.
European Union consumer-law context
On June 16, 2026, the European Commission said EU consumer law already provides safeguards when digital content or services do not conform to the contract and to what consumers could reasonably expect. Depending on the circumstances, consumers may be entitled to a proportionate refund. The Commission also said it could not at that stage propose a general legal obligation to keep video games playable after commercial provision ends, citing intellectual-property constraints.
This high-level statement is not an automatic refund decision. The outcome can depend on the country, contract wording, marketing promises, expected duration, accessibility commitments and reason for the shutdown. Use your national consumer-protection authority or qualified legal advice for an individual dispute.
Choose the next action from the result
- Purchase appears and redownload works: complete the official download and test the game’s offline and online functions separately.
- Purchase appears but the title is hidden or misplaced: restore visibility, load the relevant virtual game card where applicable, then retry.
- Purchase appears but delivery is blocked: send support the order proof and error, and ask whether the platform still serves files to prior buyers.
- Purchase is missing from the account: resolve the account, region or edition mismatch before discussing a refund.
- Download works but online features fail: check for a server-closure notice; redownload access does not restore retired online services.
- The seller confirms access ended or the product is faulty: submit the refund or other remedy request promptly under the applicable storefront policy and local law.
Keep the evidence and watch the qualification
Store receipts, screenshots, case numbers and official notices in one place. Platform menus and service policies can change, so use the current support instructions when you retry. The decisive distinction is not whether a game vanished from the shop; it is whether your account still has an entitlement, whether the platform still delivers the files, and whether the game’s required services remain operational.
