If the manufacturer will not sell you a replacement part, first identify the exact device and part, then ask whether the part is discontinued, temporarily unavailable, or available through an authorized repairer. Check your warranty and local consumer protections before opening the device. If the manufacturer cannot provide a safe route, compare a verified compatible part or qualified independent repair with the cost and likely remaining life of replacing the device. There is no universal right to buy every spare part, and the options depend on the product and where you live.
1. Identify the device and the exact part
Start with the full model identifier, not just the product name. Record the hardware revision and, where useful, the serial number. Photograph the failed component and any label or part number on it. A different revision of a product with the same name may use a different component.

Look for identifiers on the device, its packaging, purchase documents, or the manufacturer’s support page. If you cannot find a part number, describe the component and its location, and ask the manufacturer or a repairer to identify it before you order anything.

- Can an authorized service provider order or install it even if it is not sold directly to consumers?
- Is the repair covered by the device’s warranty, and what process must you follow?
Part shortages and repair barriers are documented concerns. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2021 report described limits on spare parts, difficult-to-replace components, and unavailable diagnostic software. That does not establish that a particular part is available—or that a manufacturer must sell it—but it explains why asking about service channels and diagnostic requirements matters. The FTC’s report on repair restrictions discusses these barriers.
3. Check warranty and consumer protections before opening the device
Review the warranty paperwork, purchase receipt, and the original seller’s support terms. If the device may still be covered, contact the seller or manufacturer before attempting a repair; opening it or using a particular repair route can affect the practical handling of a claim, depending on the terms and applicable law.

If you are in the United States
FTC guidance says a manufacturer cannot refuse an otherwise covered repair under an unexpired warranty solely because an independent shop previously completed an unrelated repair. The FTC also says it will pursue repair restrictions that violate applicable consumer-protection or antitrust law. This is not a blanket federal entitlement to compel a manufacturer to sell any requested spare part; warranty and legal outcomes depend on the facts. See the FTC’s consumer guidance and its policy statement on repair restrictions. For state-specific questions, consult your state attorney general or consumer agency.

If you are in the European Union
EU repair rights are not the same for every product. Directive (EU) 2024/1799 sets a repair obligation for goods covered by specified EU legislation and subject to the directive’s conditions; it also allows consumers to seek repair from a repairer of their choice for covered goods. It is not a right to obtain every part for every device. Check whether your product category is covered and how the directive currently applies in your country before relying on a remedy or deadline. The consolidated directive text and the European Commission’s summary dated July 31, 2026 explain the framework.

Elsewhere, check the consumer-protection authority or official legal guidance for your country or region. Rights can also differ by product category, warranty terms, and the reason for the failure.
4. Look for a verified route to repair
Search using the exact model and part number. An unverified listing that uses the product name is not proof that a component will fit or work safely. Before buying, check the seller’s compatibility information and return terms; where possible, get written confirmation for your precise revision.

- Removable dividers provide high customization for small parts and larger hand tools
- Two side latches lock top lid, keep contents secure inside and allow secure stacking of additional organizers
- Unique 90 degree angle allows combination of tools and small parts storage
- Special lid structure upper lid interlocking with dividers prevents movement of small parts from one compartment to another
- Authorized distributor or service provider: Ask whether it can source or install the part even if the manufacturer will not sell it directly to you.
- Specialist parts seller: Confirm the exact part number, compatibility, condition, and return policy before ordering.
- Used part or donor device: Check revision compatibility and the part’s condition. A visually similar component may not be interchangeable.
- Independent repairer: Ask for an estimate and find out whether the repair needs proprietary diagnostics, calibration, or software pairing.
Alternative parts and independent repair can be viable, but compatibility, safety, software pairing, and warranty terms vary by device. The FTC’s repair-restrictions report describes why parts and diagnostics can limit repair options; it cannot verify a particular third-party listing or service for your device.
5. Decide whether DIY is appropriate
Attempt a repair yourself only when the part is confirmed compatible, you can follow safe disassembly instructions for the exact device, and you have the skills and tools for the job. A precision screwdriver set may suit some small-device repairs, but first check the fastener type and the device’s instructions; no one tool fits every repair.

Stop and use a qualified repairer if the job involves high-voltage components, a swollen battery, a sealed pressure system, or another hazard outside your training. Also avoid improvising when the repair requires specialized diagnostics, calibration, or software pairing that you cannot perform reliably.
6. Compare repair with replacement
Get a repair estimate before committing to an uncertain part or a difficult DIY attempt. Compare the options using the factors that matter for this device:
- Total out-of-pocket cost, including the part, labor, shipping, and any diagnostic fee.
- Whether compatibility is confirmed and the repair can be completed safely.
- Expected turnaround time and the repairer’s warranty on parts and labor.
- Any warranty or statutory rights you could lose or should use before proceeding.
- Data, privacy, and safety implications of the repair.
- The device’s likely remaining lifespan and the chance that another failure will make further repair impractical.
The FTC advises consumers to consider product lifespan, likely failures, and repair difficulty when evaluating repair options. Its guidance does not provide a universal savings figure, so base the decision on an actual estimate and the condition of your device. FTC consumer guidance offers further context.
