A tracker and an exchange can show different prices without either being broken. A tracker may publish a volume-weighted value across many markets, while an exchange shows a specific pair at one venue. Before buying or selling, verify the asset, pair, quote currency, timestamp, price type, order-book liquidity and—most importantly—the exchange’s order preview.
Why the numbers differ
There is no single universal crypto price at every instant. Each platform defines its displayed price from a particular set of markets and observations. A global tracker can combine prices from many exchanges and trading pairs, whereas an exchange page is tied to one venue and one market, such as an asset quoted in USD or a stablecoin.

CoinGecko Support says its headline price is a volume-weighted average built from major exchanges and pairs worldwide. Its explanation specifically identifies regional premiums and decentralized-exchange prices as reasons that the aggregate can differ from an individual exchange. CoinMarketCap describes a market-pair price algorithm that also considers confidence in the distribution of exchange-reported prices. Those methodologies are useful for a broad reference value, but they are not a promise that any particular venue will fill your order at that number.

An aggregate smooths differences among venues. A large, liquid exchange may carry more weight than a thin market, so the tracker’s value can sit above or below the quote you see locally. The aggregate may also include markets in other regions, with different currency conversions, market hours for fiat rails, or temporary premiums caused by local demand.

An exchange shows a venue-specific market
The exchange’s page normally represents one order book. Its displayed figure may be the last trade, the midpoint between the best bid and ask, an estimated buy or sell price, or another reference chosen by that service. Even when two exchanges use the same pair name, their order books can contain different participants, spreads and available quantities.
First identify what each price actually means
Comparing two numbers is meaningful only after you identify their definitions. Use this table as a checklist before deciding that a discrepancy is an error.
| Price label | What it represents | Can it be your execution price? |
|---|---|---|
| Global or multi-market aggregate | A calculated value from selected exchanges and pairs, often volume-weighted | No. It is context, not a venue-specific quote |
| Last trade | The price of the most recently matched transaction | Not necessarily. The next available orders may be elsewhere |
| Midpoint | The arithmetic midpoint between the best bid and best ask | Usually no; it may be between prices that are not available for your order size |
| Bid | The highest visible price a buyer currently offers | Relevant to a sale, but only for the displayed quantity and while it remains available |
| Ask | The lowest visible price a seller currently requests | Relevant to a purchase, but it can change before matching |
| Estimated order price | A platform’s calculation for your proposed side and amount | Closer to the trade you are attempting, but still subject to movement and liquidity |
| Executed price | The price or prices at which your order actually fills | Yes; a market order can fill across several levels |
Robinhood Support states that its crypto detail-page figure is the mid price, the midpoint of bid and ask. The same support explanation says a difference between an estimated bid or ask and the execution price is caused by market movement. That distinction applies broadly: a reference number is not the same thing as a firm fill.

- Confirm the asset identity. Do not rely on a ticker symbol alone. Symbols can be duplicated or ambiguous. Compare the full asset name, network or contract information where shown, and the identity displayed by both services. CoinGecko’s aggregation methodology describes operational checks that map tickers to coins and account for duplicate symbols.
- Match the quote currency. Check whether both prices are in the same fiat currency or crypto quote. A USD market, a stablecoin market and a BTC-quoted market are different markets. If a platform converts currencies, the conversion rate and its update time can add another difference.
- Match the market type. Spot, margin, perpetual and other derivative markets can reference the same underlying asset while carrying different prices. Compare like with like; a spot tracker value is not a direct benchmark for a futures contract.
- Record the exact venue and pair. Write down the exchange name, pair symbol and side of the trade. This prevents comparing a tracker’s worldwide figure with an unrelated pair on the exchange.
Compare timestamps and data freshness
Two services may observe the same market at different moments. CoinGecko’s published aggregation methodology says it takes exchange-data snapshots every minute for its aggregation. Its timestamp guidance distinguishes the time an API response was fetched from the time the pair last traded. Those are not interchangeable.
- Last-trade time: when the market most recently matched a transaction.
- Fetch time: when the service retrieved the data.
- Display time: when your app or browser rendered the value, which can lag either source.
Open both pages again and note their displayed times. A fast-moving market can change materially between a tracker snapshot and an exchange refresh. A pair with no recent trades may show an old last-trade price even while the best bid and ask have moved.
Inspect the order book, spread and depth
Liquidity determines whether a displayed price is usable for your order size. The spread is the gap between the best ask and best bid. A narrow spread generally indicates that the top of the book is closely matched; a wide spread means a midpoint can be far from either immediately executable side.

Depth is the quantity available at and near each price level. If you buy more than the quantity at the best ask, the rest may fill at progressively higher asks. A sale can move down through lower bids. This effect is commonly called price impact or slippage.

CoinGecko’s Trust Score methodology evaluates pair quality using factors including spread, order-book depth, volume and trading activity. It also warns that reported volume can be artificially inflated, so volume alone is not proof of a healthy market. For a real decision, inspect the live book for the exact pair and amount you intend to trade.
A practical depth check
- Open the exchange’s order-book view for the exact pair.
- Note the best bid, best ask and the spread between them.
- Find the cumulative quantity available through the amount you plan to buy or sell.
- Estimate the average fill across those levels rather than using only the first line.
- Reduce the order size, use a limit order, or wait if the book is unusually thin.
Use the exchange’s order preview as the final reference
When you are ready to trade, enter the intended amount and open the exchange’s quote or order preview. Check the side (buy or sell), order type, estimated average price, fees, total cost or proceeds, and any slippage warning. This is the closest indication of what that venue expects for that specific order at that moment.
A tracker value can help you judge whether the market is broadly in line, but it cannot guarantee an execution price. Prices can move between the preview and matching, especially for market orders or thin pairs. A limit order lets you specify the worst price you will accept, although it may remain unfilled.
How to diagnose an unusually large mismatch
If the difference is larger than the normal spread between venues, pause rather than chasing the apparent bargain. Work through these branches in order.

Wrong quote or market
Confirm that both sides use the same quote currency and that neither page is showing a derivative, leveraged product or another market type. A stablecoin can trade at a temporary premium or discount to its intended fiat reference.
Stale or delayed data
Refresh both pages and compare their timestamps. Look for a recent last trade and a current bid and ask. If one page has not updated while the market is active, treat its number as stale.
Thin liquidity or a wide spread
Review depth near the displayed price. A last trade from a small amount can sit far from the prices available for your larger order. A midpoint can also look attractive while neither side has enough quantity to fill you there.
Exchange or market disruption
Check the venue’s status and notices for halted trading, maintenance, deposit or withdrawal restrictions, or a newly announced market change. Do not assume that a transfer is possible merely because a price is visible.
Regional or decentralized-market premium
A global tracker can include markets from regions or decentralized venues with different supply, demand and settlement conditions. Compare the same regional venue and pair if you need a like-for-like benchmark.
Without the asset, pair, venue, order size and timestamps, no one can identify the exact cause of a particular mismatch. The checks above narrow the possibilities without treating a broad tracker value as an executable quote.

A repeatable comparison worksheet
For any future discrepancy, record these fields side by side:
| Field | Tracker | Exchange |
|---|---|---|
| Asset identity | Full name and identifier shown | Full name, network or contract shown |
| Pair and quote | Pair or aggregate currency | Exact venue pair and quote currency |
| Price definition | Aggregate, last trade or other label | Midpoint, bid, ask, estimate or last trade |
| Observation and fetch times | Displayed timestamps and freshness | Displayed timestamps and freshness |
| Liquidity | Any pair-quality indicators | Spread, depth and quantity available |
| Trade conditions | Not an execution quote | Order preview, fees and slippage estimate |
Taking a screenshot or writing down these values is useful when prices change quickly or when you need to contact support. Include the exact time, pair and order size; a bare statement that “the price is wrong” cannot be diagnosed reliably.
Which price should you use?
Use the tracker for broad context: it can show whether a market is generally rising or falling and provide a multi-venue reference. Use the exchange’s current bid, ask and order preview to decide whether a specific trade is acceptable. For a large order, evaluate the expected average fill through the book, not the headline number. If the identity, pair, timestamps or liquidity do not line up, do not place the order until they do.
What the available methodologies establish—and what they do not
CoinGecko’s support and methodology pages establish that its aggregate uses selected spot-exchange tickers, volume weighting and one-minute snapshots, and that pair-quality assessment considers spread, depth, volume and activity. Its timestamp guidance explains the difference between fetched data and the last trade. CoinMarketCap’s support explanation describes an algorithm that weighs confidence in exchange-reported price distributions. Robinhood’s support article provides a concrete example of a midpoint display differing from an order and execution price.
These descriptions explain why two interfaces can disagree, but they do not reveal the cause of your individual discrepancy. That requires the specific asset, pair, venue, trade size and time. No single tracker number can substitute for the live market and order conditions on the exchange where you intend to trade.
