Open the exchange’s Orders, Open Orders, or transaction-history screen and inspect the order’s status, pair, side, type, price, requested amount, filled amount, remaining amount, fees, and timestamps. A partial fill is an executed trade, not a failed order. Decide whether to leave the remainder active or cancel it only after confirming that the exchange permits cancellation for its current state; canceling cannot undo the quantity already filled.
Start by confirming what actually happened
Do not assume that “stuck,” “pending,” or “partially filled” means the same thing on every platform. Open the exchange account’s Orders, Open Orders, or Order history page. Select the specific order and record its details before changing anything.

Coinbase’s order-management guidance lists these kinds of fields, while Binance directs users to Open Orders to check the order price and whether it has matched. Use the labels in your own account rather than assuming another exchange’s menu names apply.
Understand a partial fill before taking action
A partially filled order has executed for only part of the requested quantity. The filled portion is a completed trade; it is not waiting to be reversed. The unfilled remainder may still be an active open order, depending on market availability and the exchange’s time-in-force rules.

The filled portion
Check the actual executed quantity and the fee attached to it. Your available balance may reflect the completed trade even while the remainder continues to reserve funds. If you cancel, you cancel only the unfilled remainder; you do not roll back the trades that already occurred.
The remaining portion
An order shown as open can continue matching if another trader offers a compatible price and quantity. Leaving it open preserves the original instructions, including the limit price, but keeps the associated funds committed and exposes the remainder to further execution.
When leaving it open makes sense
- Your original price is still acceptable.
- You still want the remaining quantity.
- You can tolerate an uncertain completion time because no exchange-wide “stuck” threshold or standard waiting period exists.
- The exchange shows the order as open or pending rather than rejected or expired.
When canceling the remainder makes sense
- The market has moved and the original price no longer reflects your plan.
- You need the reserved funds for another trade or withdrawal.
- You want to replace the order with a different price or size.
- The order is still eligible for cancellation under that exchange’s rules.

How to cancel or replace an order safely
- Open the order record. Use the exchange’s Orders, Open Orders, or transaction-history screen and select the exact order ID.
- Reconcile the quantities. Confirm the filled amount, remaining amount, fees, and any reserved balance. Do not submit a second order that unintentionally duplicates the quantity already filled.
- Check the current status. Look for open, pending, partially filled, completed, canceled, rejected, or expired. A completed order cannot be modified on platforms that use Coinbase’s status model.
- Use the exchange’s own cancel control. Select Cancel or its equivalent only if the interface offers it for that status. Do not treat an API response, browser refresh, or disappearing row as proof that cancellation succeeded.
- Wait for the final status to update in the account. Refresh the order history and confirm that the remainder is labeled canceled or otherwise no longer active.
- Check the balance after confirmation. Funds held for an open order are generally reserved until execution or cancellation processing. Coinbase explains that canceling the associated order releases those held funds; the exact display and timing are exchange-specific.
- If replacing the order, recalculate the size. Base the new order on the unfilled quantity, account for fees, and review the price, side, and order type before submitting.
- Save the evidence. Keep the order ID, status screen, timestamps, and any error message in case support must investigate.
A cancellation request is not a reversal. If a fill arrives before the cancellation is accepted, that quantity remains traded and the final canceled amount may be smaller than the original remainder.

Why an order can remain pending or unfilled
There is no single cross-exchange diagnosis. The reason must be inferred from the order details, the live order book, and the platform’s own explanation.

Your limit price does not meet available orders
A limit buy generally needs sellers at or below its limit price, while a limit sell generally needs buyers at or above its limit price. If the market has moved away from your limit, the order can remain open without additional fills. Moving the price may improve the chance of execution, but it changes the trade you originally authorized.
Insufficient counterparties or thin liquidity
Even when the price appears close to the market, there may not be enough opposing quantity at that price. Binance lists insufficient counterparties as a possible reason for an order remaining pending. A partial fill is consistent with some available liquidity having matched while the rest was unavailable.
Queue position
Orders at the same price are not necessarily filled simultaneously. Binance Support states: Orders on the order book are filled in a chronological order, so there might be other orders ahead of yours.
Canceling and resubmitting can therefore move you to the back of the queue, even if the replacement uses the same price.
Insufficient account balance
Kraken documents insufficient account balance as a reason an order can execute only partially and says the order details may show the explanation. Treat this as a Kraken-specific documented cause, not a universal rule. Check whether fees, locked funds, or another pending order reduced the balance available for the remaining quantity.

Order-type, time-in-force, or product rules
Some products expire at a specified time, while others remain open until canceled. Stop orders may not become active until their trigger condition is reached, and derivatives or regional products can impose additional restrictions. Read the order’s own terms and the exchange’s current help page before assuming that a pending label means the matching engine is malfunctioning.
What the major help pages establish—and what they do not
Coinbase guidance
Coinbase Help defines a partially filled order as one in which only part of the requested quantity has executed. Its documentation says the remainder can stay active as an open order until the applicable time-in-force expires. Coinbase also says that only open or pending orders may be canceled and that completed orders cannot be modified. Its open-order guidance explains that funds reserved for an open order are held and become available when the associated order is canceled.
Those are Coinbase’s status definitions and controls. Other exchanges may use different labels, permit cancellation in different states, or process balances differently.

Binance guidance
Binance’s order-issue guidance recommends checking Open Orders, the price, and whether the order has matched. It identifies price, insufficient counterparties, and chronological queue position as possible causes of a pending order. It also suggests canceling and submitting a new order at a more competitive price, or considering a market order when a user wants a faster fill. That is troubleshooting guidance, not a promise of execution or a guaranteed price.

For API users, Binance’s Spot API documentation illustrates why status matters: cancellation restrictions can be limited to new or partially filled states. An API client should therefore read the returned status and error code instead of repeatedly sending cancel requests.
Kraken guidance
Kraken’s support material on orders partially filled because of “Out of Funds” identifies insufficient account balance as a possible cause and directs users to the order details for the stated reason. Do not assume that a balance visible in one wallet or currency is automatically available for the specific market and fee requirement.

First, stop submitting duplicate orders. A delayed screen can make an order look active after the exchange has accepted a cancel request, or a fill can arrive between your first check and the cancellation response.

- Check both open orders and completed or canceled history.
- Read the complete error message, including any status code or reason.
- Compare the filled and remaining quantities with the balance ledger, not only the headline wallet balance.
- Record the time, trading pair, side, order type, price, amount, and screenshots that do not expose passwords or authentication codes.
If the exchange still shows the order as open, use its cancel control again only when the interface indicates that the state is cancelable. If it shows canceled but the funds have not been credited, or if you cannot cancel at all, contact the exchange through its official support process. Binance specifically directs users to seek further support when cancellation fails or funds have not been credited. The available guidance does not establish a universal waiting time, so do not rely on an arbitrary number of minutes or hours.
Never give a password, recovery phrase, API secret, one-time code, or remote-access permission to someone claiming to “unlock” the order. Support staff should not need those credentials to review an order ID.
How to choose between keeping, repricing, and using a market order
Keep the original limit order
Choose this when the original price is still your objective and you accept that the remaining quantity may not fill. This avoids paying the spread simply to gain speed, but leaves capital committed and preserves the existing market instructions rather than guaranteeing execution.
Cancel and submit a new limit order
Choose this when you have a new price or quantity after reviewing current liquidity. Before submitting, subtract the already filled amount and the expected fee from your plan. The replacement receives a new queue position and can face the same liquidity problem.

A market order prioritizes trading against available bids or asks rather than preserving a specific limit price. It may be appropriate when completion speed matters more than price certainty, but the final average price depends on available liquidity. The Binance suggestion to consider a market order is exchange-specific troubleshooting advice, not a guarantee that every quantity will execute at one displayed price.

Prevention checklist for future orders
- Confirm the pair, side, quantity, decimal precision, and order type before submitting.
- For a limit order, compare the limit price with the current best bid or ask and inspect depth beyond the top level.
- Read the product’s time-in-force setting so you know whether the order can expire or remain open indefinitely.
