What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with power, connections, and a working outlet before attempting any reset. Reconnect the charger, charge the Chromebook for at least 30 minutes if its charging light responds, and test it after each change. If it repeatedly shuts off and starts again, Google’s troubleshooting path moves from a normal restart to Diagnostics and ChromeOS recovery. A hardware reset, factory reset (Powerwash), and ChromeOS recovery are different procedures with different data-loss risks, so use them in that order and back up local files whenever the Chromebook can still be used.
Identify which failure you are seeing
“Won’t turn on” can mean several different things: no indicator light, a dark display with power activity, a battery that is not charging, or a Chromebook that starts but never reaches sign-in. “Keeps restarting” means it reaches some stage of startup and then powers off or reboots repeatedly. The same symptom can result from an empty battery, a loose connection, a display problem, a damaged profile, or ChromeOS that needs recovery. The steps below deliberately begin with checks that are unlikely to erase data.

- No light or sound: begin with the outlet, charger, and charging interval.
- Charging light but no usable screen: complete the charging and power-cycle checks before considering a hardware reset.
- Starts, then reboots over and over: use the repeated-restart path, including Diagnostics and recovery guidance.
- You can sign in but see an operating-system error: shut down and restart normally before destructive options.
After every step, try to start the Chromebook or observe whether the restart cycle has changed. A result from one step determines whether you need the next one.

Reconnect everything and test the outlet
- Plug the charger directly into a known-working wall outlet.
- Push the charging connector firmly into the Chromebook.
- Check that the adapter is fully connected to the wall cable and to the Chromebook cable.
- Test the outlet with another device if you are unsure it supplies power.
Look for the Chromebook’s charging indicator. If it appears to be charging, leave it connected for at least 30 minutes, the minimum interval specified in Google Chromebook Help for the covered no-charge cases. Then try the power button again.

FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
Reconnect in the prescribed order if it still will not charge
Disconnect the charger at both ends. Reconnect it to the Chromebook first and then to the wall outlet. Allow another charging period of at least 30 minutes and test again. This sequence can clear a poor connection without changing ChromeOS or local files.
Do not guess at a replacement charger based only on the connector shape. Charging specifications vary by model. If the indicator never responds after the outlet and connection checks, note the exact model and move to manufacturer support rather than ordering an unverified part.
Try a normal shutdown and restart
If the Chromebook reaches the sign-in screen or lets you sign in, use the normal shut-down command, wait for it to turn off completely, and then power it on again. Google’s recovery guidance recommends this ordinary power cycle when an operating-system error is visible before moving to a factory reset or recovery.

What to do when the Chromebook turns off and back on repeatedly
Use Diagnostics when you can reach ChromeOS
Google’s repeated-restart guidance points to the built-in Diagnostics app, including memory checks. Charging problems can also be investigated with its battery tools. Run the relevant test when ChromeOS stays open long enough, and record any error or battery result exactly as shown. A memory result can explain a restart loop, but the app does not authorize a component replacement by itself; use the result when speaking with the manufacturer.
Move to ChromeOS recovery if the loop persists
Google explicitly advises recovering a Chromebook that repeatedly turns off and back on. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS, so it is a consequential step rather than another restart. Before starting, copy any accessible files from local storage to cloud storage or another device. Files already synchronized to an online account are not the same as files kept only in Downloads or other local folders.

Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
Hardware reset: a nonstandard power reset with a limited data risk
Use a hardware reset only after checking power and trying a normal restart when available. For most Chromebook models:
- Turn the Chromebook off.
- Press and hold Refresh (the circular-arrow key).
- While holding Refresh, tap the Power button.
- Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
Google warns that this reset might delete some files in the Downloads folder. It is therefore not a zero-risk equivalent of unplugging and reconnecting power. Save local files first if the device still permits access.
Chromebook tablets and some models use a different button combination. If the standard Refresh-plus-Power sequence does nothing, stop rather than trying random keys and consult the exact manufacturer instructions for that model. The physical layout, removable keyboard, and model-specific reset behavior determine the correct procedure.
Factory reset (Powerwash) versus ChromeOS recovery
| Procedure | Best fit | What it removes | Equipment | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power and charging check | No power, no charge, or uncertain battery state | No intentional data deletion | Charger and working outlet | Always first |
| Normal power cycle | ChromeOS error while you can sign in | No intentional data deletion | None | Before destructive software steps |
| Hardware reset | Device remains unresponsive after basic checks | Some Downloads files might be deleted | None | After power checks and normal restart |
| Powerwash (factory reset) | User-profile or settings problems | Local user data, including Downloads, settings, and apps | None | After a hardware reset when profile or settings corruption is suspected |
| ChromeOS recovery | Persistent boot loop or damaged operating system | Everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files | Internet recovery on supported newer models, or USB media | When Google’s repeated-restart path points to reinstalling ChromeOS |
Powerwash is a factory reset
A Powerwash erases local user data, settings, and installed apps. Google describes it as a response to user-profile or settings problems and places a hardware reset before it in that flow. Back up local files before confirming the reset. Because the operating system itself is not being reinstalled, Powerwash is not the same remedy as recovery for a damaged ChromeOS installation.

Recovery reinstalls the operating system
Recovery is the stronger intervention for a continuing boot loop or an operating-system failure. It permanently erases local storage. Choose it only after you have copied what you can and understand that downloaded files will not return unless you backed them up elsewhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recovery options and their requirements
Internet recovery
Some newer Chromebooks offer recovery over the internet. When that option appears on the device’s recovery screen, it can avoid creating a separate USB installer. Availability depends on the model and its firmware; do not assume every Chromebook supports it.
USB recovery media
The USB method requires:
- A USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
- Another working Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome, to create the recovery media.
- Internet access for the recovery-media creation process.
Creating the media erases the USB drive. Use one whose existing contents can be permanently lost, and copy anything important from it before beginning. The USB drive is unnecessary when the affected model supports internet recovery.

- Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)
When to stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer
Contact the Chromebook manufacturer if the charging indicator never responds after the outlet and 30-minute charging checks, if a hardware reset does not change the behavior, if Diagnostics reports a hardware-related failure, or if recovery cannot complete. Google directs owners to the manufacturer when official troubleshooting does not resolve persistent restarts or charging problems.
Have the model number, serial number if available, the exact restart pattern, indicator-light behavior, recent drops or liquid exposure, and any Diagnostics or recovery error text ready. This information lets support distinguish a battery, display, board, storage, or software issue without guessing. Do not open the Chromebook or replace a battery based solely on the generic symptom; repair procedures and parts are model-specific.
A practical decision path
- No indicator: verify the wall outlet and every charger connection, then charge for at least 30 minutes.
- Indicator responds: try to start it after the charging interval; if you can sign in, shut down and restart normally.
- Repeated reboot: run memory or battery Diagnostics when ChromeOS stays available.
- Still looping: back up accessible local files and prepare for ChromeOS recovery, using internet recovery if the model offers it.
- Unresponsive after basic checks: perform the model-appropriate hardware reset, remembering that Downloads files might be affected.
- Profile or settings fault: consider Powerwash only after backup and after the hardware-reset step.
- No resolution: provide the manufacturer with the model and observed evidence instead of attempting an unverified hardware repair.
This order keeps low-risk checks ahead of actions that erase data or require another computer. Test the Chromebook after each step so you do not perform a destructive operation for a problem that a loose connection or depleted battery caused.
