If your Chromebook touchscreen has stopped responding or the device no longer switches correctly between laptop and tablet modes, follow Google’s sequence: clean the screen, perform the hardware reset for your exact model, test again, and use a factory reset only after backing up local files. If the problem remains, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. Do not force the hinge, open the chassis, or follow a generic key combination that may not match your device.
Start by identifying what has stopped working
“Touchscreen not working” and “stuck in tablet mode” can describe different faults. A screen may display an image while ignoring every finger tap. Alternatively, touch may work but the hinge position is not being recognized, so the Chromebook remains in laptop mode or enters tablet mode at the wrong time.

Touch input has stopped
Try touching several areas of the display, including a corner and the center. If none responds, treat it as a touchscreen-input problem and begin with the cleaning step below. Do not assume that a failed touchscreen is caused by dirt; cleaning is simply Google’s first, lowest-risk check.

On supported convertible Chromebooks, folding the display over the hinge should switch the device into tablet mode, and the on-screen keyboard should open automatically. That is the expected behavior described by Google, not a diagnosis of why a particular device fails. A Chromebook that does not change modes could have a sensor or other hardware problem, but the available official guidance does not identify a universal cause.

The safest troubleshooting order
Use the actions in this order and test touch or tablet mode after each one. The sequence moves from the least disruptive check to the step that removes local data.

Step 1: clean the screen correctly
Google’s touchscreen guidance starts with removing dust or dirt. Shut down or otherwise secure the Chromebook according to the device’s normal handling instructions, then use a soft, clean cloth to wipe the touchscreen. A clean microfiber cloth is suitable for this cleaning task; it is not a hinge repair or a way to restore a damaged digitizer.
What to check while cleaning
- Use a soft, clean cloth rather than a rough material.
- Remove visible dust, dirt, or smears from the entire touch surface.
- Do not press hard on the display or push against the hinge while wiping.
- Afterward, test taps and swipes in more than one location.
If touch returns, monitor the Chromebook. If the display still ignores touch, continue to the hardware reset instead of repeatedly scrubbing the screen. Cleaning cannot confirm or rule out an internal touchscreen failure.

Step 2: perform the hardware reset for your exact model
Google recommends resetting Chromebook hardware after cleaning. The correct procedure is not universal: it can differ between a convertible Chromebook and a tablet, and it can vary by model. Find the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact Chromebook before pressing keys or buttons.
How to avoid the wrong reset procedure
- Write down the Chromebook’s exact model name and configuration before starting.
- Use the manufacturer’s model-specific hardware-reset instructions, not a key combination copied from a different Chromebook.
- Follow the instructions exactly, complete the reset, and allow the Chromebook to start normally.
- Test the touchscreen and fold the display, if it is a convertible, to check whether tablet mode now changes correctly.
The supplied official guidance does not establish one button sequence that is safe for every Chromebook. Avoid opening the chassis, moving parts around the hinge, or adjusting magnets based on an online post. A community product expert has mentioned small magnets in tablet-mode sensing when discussing a convertible stuck in tablet mode, but that is anecdotal advice, not a manufacturer diagnosis or a universal explanation.
Step 3: test both touch and mode switching
After the hardware reset, test the two functions separately. This helps you describe the failure accurately if you need support.

Test the touchscreen
- Tap icons or controls in several parts of the display.
- Try a simple swipe and a tap near an edge as well as in the middle.
- Record whether touch works intermittently, in only one area, or nowhere.
Test the hinge and tablet mode
- If the Chromebook is a supported convertible, slowly fold the display over the hinge into tablet position.
- Check whether the operating system changes to tablet mode.
- Check whether the on-screen keyboard appears when a text field is selected.
- Return the display to laptop position and see whether the behavior changes back.
If touch works but the mode never changes, report those as separate symptoms. If neither touch nor mode switching works, tell support both facts. The expected behavior does not prove which component has failed.
Step 4: treat a factory reset as a last software step
Google places a factory reset after cleaning and a hardware reset. A factory reset is substantially more disruptive because it erases local data on the Chromebook, including the Downloads folder. Back up files stored locally before starting.
Prepare before resetting
- Open Downloads and any other locations where files may exist only on the Chromebook.
- Copy important documents, photos, or other local files to storage you can access after the reset.
- Confirm that you know any account or setup details needed to use the Chromebook again.
- Write down the exact symptoms and the steps already attempted so you can provide them to support if the reset does not help.
Work- and school-managed devices
If an organization manages the Chromebook, contact the school or workplace administrator before attempting a factory reset. Administrative enrollment and local policies can affect how the device must be reset. Do not bypass management controls or reset an organization-owned Chromebook on your own.

Test immediately after the reset
Once the factory reset is complete, test touch and tablet-mode switching before reinstalling software or changing many settings. If the same failure remains on a freshly reset device, that is useful information for the manufacturer and makes a hardware diagnosis more likely, but it still does not identify the failed part by itself.

Google’s Diagnostics overview describes checks for the battery, CPU, memory, and Wi-Fi. It does not list a touchscreen test or a hinge-position test. Therefore, do not treat the Diagnostics app as confirmation that a digitizer, hinge sensor, or tablet-mode mechanism has failed.

When to contact the Chromebook manufacturer
Google’s official instruction is direct: “If these steps don’t fix the problem, contact your Chromebook manufacturer.” Use the manufacturer’s support channel for the exact model, rather than trying to repair the hinge or screen based on a generic guide.
Information to give support
- The complete model name.
- When the touchscreen or mode-switching problem began.
- Whether touch ever worked on the device.
- Whether the Chromebook recently updated or was dropped.
- Whether laptop mode, tablet mode, or both behave incorrectly.
- Which cleaning, hardware-reset, and factory-reset steps you completed.
- Whether the Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace.
An update, a drop, or a hinge symptom can be relevant context, but none of those events proves the cause on its own. Let the manufacturer or an appropriately qualified repair provider diagnose the device.
Repair decisions after diagnosis
Do not buy a replacement digitizer, screen assembly, hinge, or repair tool until you have a diagnosis for the exact model. Parts and procedures are model-specific, and the available guidance does not establish a universal repair price or warranty outcome.

- Is the proposed part compatible with the exact Chromebook model and revision?
- Will the repair affect any remaining warranty or service agreement?
- Does the technician have appropriate experience with Chromebook displays and hinges?
- What evidence identifies the failed component?
- What is the total cost after diagnosis, parts, labor, and any required shipping?
Compare those answers only after a provider has inspected the device. A low quoted price is not useful if the part is incompatible or the repair risks additional hinge or display damage.
A concise decision checklist
- Screen dirty? Wipe it with a soft, clean cloth and test again.
- Still no touch or mode change? Identify the exact model and follow its hardware-reset instructions.
- Problem remains? Back up local files, remember that Downloads will be erased, and consider the factory reset.
- Managed Chromebook? Ask the administrator before resetting.
- Failure survives the sequence? Contact the Chromebook manufacturer with the model, timeline, symptoms, and attempted steps.
This order protects your data and avoids turning an uncertain hinge or touchscreen problem into additional physical damage. It also gives support a clear record of what changed, and what did not, after each test.
