A cable tester that reports “good” usually confirms only continuity and wire order. It does not measure internet throughput, the Ethernet speed negotiated by your devices, router capacity, Wi‑Fi conditions, modem health or your ISP’s service. Treat the result as proof that one narrow cable fault is less likely—not as proof that the whole connection is healthy.
The quickest way to locate the real bottleneck is to run a wired speed test, connect a computer directly to the modem or gateway, and compare the negotiated speed and ratings of every component in the path.

What a “good” cable-test result actually proves
Basic Ethernet testers send a low-voltage signal through the conductors and check whether each wire reaches the expected pin. Depending on the tester, they may identify an open circuit, short, reversed pair or incorrect wire map. That is useful for finding a broken plug or a badly terminated cable.

A cable can have continuity on all eight conductors yet be an old category, have poor termination, excessive damage or electrical characteristics that cause devices to negotiate at a lower speed. The tester also says nothing about the modem, router, switch, network adapter, Wi‑Fi or broadband line.

Consequently, a passing test clears only one failure mode. You need tests that isolate the local Ethernet path from the wireless network and from the ISP connection.
Start with a reliable baseline
Run the first test over Ethernet
- Connect the affected computer directly to a router LAN port with Ethernet. Do not use Wi‑Fi, a powerline adapter or a mesh wireless link for this baseline.
- Run a reputable speed test and record download speed, upload speed and latency. Note the subscribed service rate and the time of day.
- Repeat the test at another time if results vary. Ofcom advises repeated checks because throughput can change by day and time; it also notes that delay (lag) can impair live services even when download speed appears adequate.
Use the same computer and cable for each comparison where possible. A single unusually low result can reflect a busy test server or temporary congestion, while a consistent pattern is more diagnostic.
The direct-to-modem test separates upstream and local faults
How to perform it
- Turn off or disconnect the router’s WAN connection.
- Connect the computer’s Ethernet cable directly to the modem or ISP gateway. If the modem requires a reboot before accepting a new device, restart it according to the provider’s instructions.
- Wait for the modem to regain service, then run the same wired speed test and record the figures.
- Reconnect the router and repeat the test through the router.
This comparison is recommended in troubleshooting guidance from TP-Link, NETGEAR and AmpliFi because it removes the router, its settings and any attached switch from the path.

Interpret the two results
| Direct to modem | Through router | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow | Slow | ISP, modem, service line, plan limit or external congestion | Check the modem and service status, then contact the ISP with both test results. |
| Fast | Slow | Router, WAN port, LAN port, switch, configuration or router load | Check negotiated port speed, cabling, firmware and router settings. |
| Fast | Fast on Ethernet | Wi‑Fi path or client device | Test wireless bands, distance, interference and the client’s Wi‑Fi capability. |
| Results fluctuate widely | Results fluctuate widely | Time-of-day congestion, unstable line, test-server variation or hardware fault | Repeat at several times and keep a dated record before escalating. |
If the direct wired result remains below the service you pay for after equipment checks and a restart, the router is unlikely to be the primary cause. Give the ISP the direct-test speed, latency, modem model and test times so it can investigate provisioning, outages, congestion or a line fault.
Check the negotiated Ethernet speed and every link in the path
Find the link speed on the computer
Open the operating system’s Ethernet status or adapter properties and look for “Link speed,” “Speed” or a similar field. A gigabit-capable connection normally reports 1.0 Gbps (1000 Mbps); a 100 Mbps link reports 100 Mbps; a 10 Mbps link reports 10 Mbps. The exact menu differs by operating system and adapter, but the value is more informative than the cable tester’s pass light.
A 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps link when both ends should support gigabit points to a port, cable, connector, adapter or negotiation problem. If the link reports 1 Gbps but internet tests are slow, investigate the router, modem, Wi‑Fi separation and ISP path rather than assuming the cable is limiting throughput.

Map the slowest component
Trace the physical route: computer NIC or USB adapter, patch cable, wall jack or splitter, switch, router LAN port, router WAN port, modem and the provider’s access line. Every item must support the intended rate. Google’s Nest Wifi guidance specifies 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet classes and warns that the slowest component can reduce the path to 100 or 10 Mbps. It recommends Cat5e or Cat6 for connections above 100 Mbps. TP-Link likewise notes that a 100 Mbps port caps a faster broadband plan.

| Component | What to verify | Typical limiting symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Computer NIC or USB adapter | Supported Ethernet generation and current link speed | Adapter never negotiates above 100 Mbps. |
| Router WAN port | Port rating and negotiated speed with the modem | Fast plan is capped before traffic reaches the LAN. |
| Router LAN port | 10/100/1000 Mbps rating and correct port selection | One device is slow while another port is fast. |
| Switch | Gigabit versus 10/100 model; link lights or management status | All devices behind the switch top out near 100 Mbps. |
| Wall jacks, couplers and splitters | Proper termination, category and physical condition | Intermittent negotiation or repeated drops. |
| Patch cable | Category, plugs, kinks and damage | Link falls back to 100 Mbps or disconnects under load. |
Do not select hardware solely because a cable tester says “good.” Match the cable category and each port or adapter to the speed you need.
When replacing the cable is justified
Swap the tested lead for a short, known-good Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable when the negotiated link is unexpectedly low, the plugs are loose, the sheath is kinked or crushed, or moving the cable changes the link. Make one change at a time and retest so you know what fixed the problem.

- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
NETGEAR notes that an older Cat5 cable can limit a gigabit connection to 100 Mbps. Continuity can still be present in that cable, so the tester passes even though the category or real-world negotiation is insufficient for the target rate. A replacement is useful evidence only if the link speed or measured throughput changes; replacing a cable will not correct an overloaded router or an ISP fault.
Inspect connectors and installation
- Make sure each modular plug clicks fully into the port.
- Look for bent contacts, broken locking tabs, oxidation or plugs that pull out easily.
- Avoid sharp bends, crushing under furniture and long runs alongside sources of electrical interference.
- Remove unnecessary couplers, splitters and wall adapters during testing.
- Test both ends of a permanently installed run; a patch lead can pass while a wall termination is defective.
Separate wired performance from Wi‑Fi performance
If Ethernet is close to the expected service but Wi‑Fi is slow, the broadband line is not automatically at fault. Ofcom states that distance, walls, the router, the client device and interference can affect Wi‑Fi, and that a slow Wi‑Fi test does not always indicate a broadband-line problem.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse a controlled wireless comparison
- Run a Wi‑Fi test in the same room as the router, then repeat at the problem location.
- Compare the router’s available bands and connect the device to the band appropriate for distance and capacity.
- Test another phone or computer in the same location. If only one client is slow, inspect that device’s Wi‑Fi generation, drivers, power-saving settings and adapter capability.
- Reduce walls, metal objects and nearby interference for one test. If performance improves, placement or radio conditions are the constraint.
- Compare the Wi‑Fi result with the wired baseline. Do not judge wireless performance against the cable tester.
A wireless client can also be limited by its own negotiated rate even when the router and broadband plan are faster. The practical question is whether Ethernet reaches the expected service; only then should you tune the radio network.

Restart equipment in the correct order
Restarting will not repair a damaged cable, but it can clear a stale negotiation or modem session. Microsoft recommends checking the Ethernet port, trying another cable and restarting the modem and router. Its procedure includes unplugging equipment and waiting at least about 30 seconds before reconnecting.
- Disconnect power from the modem or gateway and the router.
- Wait at least approximately 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait until its service indicators show that it is online.
- Reconnect the router and wait for its WAN and LAN links to settle.
- Verify that the computer cable is in a LAN port on the router. Microsoft specifically warns not to put the computer in the router’s Internet/WAN port, which is intended for the modem connection.
- Run the wired test again and check the negotiated link speed.
TP-Link also recommends restarting the modem first, waiting for it to return, and then restarting the router. If the direct-to-modem test is still slow after this sequence, repeated router reboots are unlikely to solve the underlying issue.
Use the symptoms to choose the next remedy
| Observed symptom | Probable explanation | Focused remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Cable tester passes; link is 100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps | Older cable category, damaged pair, 100 Mbps port or adapter | Check both port ratings, inspect plugs and try Cat5e or Cat6. |
| Link is 1 Gbps; direct-to-modem test is slow | ISP, modem, service line, plan limit or congestion | Repeat at different times and contact the ISP with evidence. |
| Direct-to-modem is fast; router path is slow | Router WAN/LAN limitation, switch, configuration or load | Bypass the switch, try another router port and confirm gigabit ratings. |
| Ethernet is fast; Wi‑Fi is slow everywhere | Band selection, interference, router placement or client capability | Test near the router, compare bands and inspect the client adapter. |
| Only one room or wall jack is slow | In-wall termination, coupler, splitter or damaged run | Bypass the fixed wiring with a temporary patch cable and retest. |
| Speed changes by time of day | Congestion, line instability or test-server variation | Keep dated download, upload and latency records for the ISP. |
When to contact the ISP
Escalate after you have completed a wired test, checked the direct modem connection, verified the ratings and link speed, and restarted modem before router. Contact the ISP when the direct-to-modem result remains below the subscribed service or the connection repeatedly drops. Ask the provider to check outages, congestion, provisioning, plan limits and line quality. Google and NETGEAR both direct customers to the ISP when a direct wired test remains slow.
Provide useful evidence rather than only saying “the cable is good”: the service tier, modem and router models, direct and router-connected speeds, latency, negotiated Ethernet speed, test times and whether another computer shows the same result. This helps the ISP distinguish a local network bottleneck from an upstream fault.
Quick Recap
A repeatable checklist
- Record download, upload and latency on a wired connection.
- Repeat at a different time if results vary.
- Connect one computer directly to the modem or gateway.
- Compare direct and router-connected results.
- Check the computer’s negotiated link speed.
- Verify NIC, adapter, cable, switch, router WAN/LAN and modem ratings.
- Try a known-good Cat5e or Cat6 cable only when the evidence points to the cable path.
- Test Wi‑Fi separately from Ethernet, including distance, walls, bands and client capability.
- Reboot modem first, wait about 30 seconds during the power disconnect, then reboot the router.
- Escalate with documented direct wired results when performance remains below the subscribed service.
