A blockchain domain can fail in your browser for several unrelated reasons: the browser may not support that suffix, the name may contain an address record rather than a website record, the decentralized content may be unavailable, or a DNS name imported into ENS may be missing its TXT or DNSSEC configuration. Start by recording the complete name and deciding what you expect it to do. Then test support for that exact naming system, inspect the relevant record, and follow the DNS-import checks only if the name is a conventional domain linked to ENS.
There is no universal browser switch that fixes every blockchain domain. The correct remedy depends on the suffix, the resolver or gateway being used, and whether you need a website, a payment/address lookup, or ordinary DNS behavior.

First decide what “resolve” should mean
Write down the full domain, including its suffix. A name ending in .eth, a name using another blockchain-oriented suffix, and a conventional domain imported into ENS follow different resolution paths. Support for one naming system does not prove support for another.

Opening a decentralized website
If you expect a web page, the name must have a website or content record and your browser must know how to retrieve it. ENS describes decentralized sites as using a content hash and gateway route; a browser can recognize the name yet still fail to fetch the content if the record is missing, the gateway is unavailable, or the referenced storage is offline. See ENS’s overview of decentralized hosting at https://docs.ens.domains/dweb/intro/.

Looking up an address or another record
Blockchain names can also resolve to payment addresses, IPFS hashes, profile data, or other records. Unstoppable Domains’ resolution library documents these different record types at https://github.com/unstoppabledomains/resolution. A successful address lookup does not guarantee that entering the same name in a browser will produce a website.
Check support for the exact suffix and route
Browser compatibility is a plausible cause when a name is valid but the address bar reports an unknown host, a DNS error, or simply leaves the page blank. Check the current documentation for your browser, wallet extension, or resolver and search specifically for the suffix you are using. Features change, so treat older compatibility statements as a description of the documentation’s context rather than a permanent capability list.
ENS’s decentralized-website documentation states that, in its described context, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari did not natively resolve decentralized websites, while Brave and Opera were identified for direct .eth resolution. The same documentation lists gateway routes for browsers without native support: https://docs.ens.domains/dweb/intro/. Verify the current browser or vendor instructions before relying on any of those routes.

| Access route | What it provides | Typical failure to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Native browser support | The browser recognizes the naming system without an add-on. | The exact suffix may not be supported, or support may have changed between browser versions. |
| Resolver or wallet extension | An extension intercepts the name and performs the system-specific lookup. | The extension is disabled, not installed, outdated, or configured for a different suffix. |
| Gateway URL | A conventional HTTPS address fetches decentralized content through a gateway. | The gateway does not support that name, cannot reach the content, or the content record is wrong. |
| DNS import into ENS | A conventional DNS domain is associated with an ENS name and records. | The DNS TXT proof, DNSSEC chain, or propagation state is incorrect. |
Do not assume that installing an extension designed for one naming system will make every blockchain suffix work. Its resolver must explicitly support the name you entered.
Use the right diagnostic branch
1. Record the name and intended result
Copy the domain exactly, including punctuation and suffix. Then state the intended result in one sentence: “I want to open a decentralized website,” “I want to see the payment address,” or “I want this conventional DNS name imported into ENS.” This prevents a website-record problem from being mistaken for an address-resolution problem.
2. Test the browser, extension, or gateway
Try the route that is documented for the exact naming system. If a native browser attempt fails, use a supported resolver extension or the system’s documented gateway, provided you trust that gateway and it supports your suffix. If the gateway works while direct navigation does not, the name itself may be fine and the limitation is browser integration.

A resolver can find the name while the website still fails. Inspect the name’s website, content, or content-hash record in the management tool for that naming system. ENS uses a content hash for decentralized hosting. Unstoppable Domains provides separate record categories for decentralized websites and DNS records in its reference documentation: https://docs.unstoppabledomains.com/web3/resolution/records-reference.
- Confirm that a website or content record actually exists; an address record alone is not a web page.
- Check that the content hash or destination is correctly formatted and points to content that is still available.
- Try the documented gateway for that system. A gateway error indicates a retrieval or availability issue rather than proof that the name is unregistered.
- If one gateway fails, test another gateway officially documented for the same system, because gateways are independent services.
4. Treat an ENS DNS import as a separate process
If you are importing a conventional DNS domain into ENS, do not troubleshoot it as though it were a native decentralized suffix. The DNS host must publish the exact TXT record required by ENS, and the domain must have a verifiable DNSSEC setup. ENS Support’s DNS-import instructions are at https://support.ens.domains/en/articles/13455689-fix-dns-import-errors.

After changing the TXT record, ENS Support advises allowing about 10–30 minutes for propagation, then refreshing and checking again. That interval is troubleshooting guidance, not a guaranteed network-wide timing. If the record is correct but still is not detected after 30 minutes, ENS identifies DNSSEC as a likely issue. Confirm that the DNS provider is serving the record at the authoritative host and that the DNSSEC chain validates from the registrar through the nameservers.
Keep control of the underlying DNS registration. Whoever controls that conventional domain can change or remove the DNS proof and therefore affect the ENS association. ENS’s gasless-import guidance is available at https://support.ens.domains/en/articles/8834820-gasless-dns-import.
5. Check provider-specific DNS settings
Some management platforms expose a switch that controls ordinary DNS independently of Web3 resolution. For a DNS domain managed through Unstoppable Domains, inspect the DNS_RESOLUTION flag. The provider states that an enabled flag allows resolution through traditional DNS; a disabled flag prevents traditional DNS resolution even though the name may continue to work in Web3 environments. Its explanation is at https://support.unstoppabledomains.com/support/solutions/articles/48001272943-what-are-dns-domain-flags-and-what-do-they-mean-.

This is a provider-specific setting, not a universal blockchain-domain control. Do not look for a DNS_RESOLUTION flag on every naming system, and do not enable traditional DNS merely to solve a decentralized-content problem.
6. Capture the details needed for a precise diagnosis
If the preceding checks do not identify the fault, collect the minimum useful information before changing more settings:
- the complete domain and suffix;
- the browser name and version;
- whether you are opening a website, looking up an address, or using an ENS DNS import;
- the exact error text or status shown by the browser;
- the resolver, wallet extension, or gateway you tried; and
- the time you published or changed any TXT, DNSSEC, content, or website record.
Without those details, a repair instruction would be guesswork because identical-looking browser errors can come from unsupported suffixes, missing records, unavailable content, or DNSSEC validation.

| The browser says it cannot find the host or does not recognize the suffix. | Verify that the browser, extension, or gateway explicitly supports that exact naming system. Try the documented alternative route. |
| The name is recognized, but the page is blank, times out, or returns a gateway error. | Inspect the website/content record and content hash, then test an officially documented gateway. |
| An address or profile lookup works, but navigation does not. | Confirm that a website record exists; an address record is not automatically a site. |
| An ENS DNS import has the expected TXT text but remains undetected after the stated propagation interval. | Recheck the authoritative TXT record and validate DNSSEC. ENS identifies DNSSEC as a likely cause after 30 minutes. |
| The name works in a Web3 tool but not through ordinary DNS. | If the domain is managed by Unstoppable Domains, inspect its DNS_RESOLUTION flag; a disabled flag blocks traditional DNS. |
Common assumptions that lead to wasted troubleshooting
- “All blockchain domains use the same protocol.” They do not. The suffix and naming system determine which resolver and records matter.
- “If the name resolves, the site must be online.” Resolution can return a record while the referenced decentralized content or gateway is unavailable.
- “A DNS TXT change is immediate.” ENS Support gives a 10–30 minute propagation-and-refresh window and points to DNSSEC when detection still fails afterward.
- “A browser setting can fix every failure.” Browser support addresses only one layer; records, gateways, DNSSEC, and provider flags are separate layers.
- “Turning on traditional DNS is always the answer.” A DNS flag affects conventional DNS behavior and does not create a missing decentralized website record.
- “Replacing the domain or buying hardware will help.” These failures are normally caused by resolver compatibility, gateway availability, or record configuration, not by a router or other physical device.
When the issue is resolved
Consider the problem fixed only when the route you actually need works: the supported browser or gateway opens the intended decentralized content, the address lookup returns the expected record, or the ENS-imported DNS name passes its TXT and DNSSEC checks and behaves as intended. Keep the underlying DNS registration and any required records in place, because later changes can break an association that previously worked.
