If your fantasy hockey goalie is a game-time decision, first check your league’s lineup lock and goalie scoring. Then look for the latest starting-goalie report and weigh its certainty against your available alternative. If the starter is still unconfirmed when your slot locks, make the choice using the evidence and scoring rules you actually have—there is no universal start-or-sit answer.
1. Find out exactly when your lineup locks
Open your fantasy league’s lineup settings and confirm whether the goalie slot locks with the full lineup, individually at the player’s game time, or under a custom schedule. Do not assume another platform’s deadline applies to your league.

For example, CBS Sports Free Fantasy Hockey’s 2026–27 rules use weekly lineups. A player’s deadline is five minutes before the first game that player’s team is scheduled to play in the scoring week; once the week begins, the weekly lineup cannot be changed. CBS describes its own game, not a general fantasy-hockey rule.
2. Check what the goalie status actually means
A label such as “projected” is not the same as a confirmed start. Left Wing Lock distinguishes three levels: “Projected” is an educated guess without a source; “Likely” means a source suggests the goalie might start but has not confirmed it; and “Confirmed” means one or more sources state the goalie will start. Read the underlying report when available, and note when it was published.

Left Wing Lock says its multi-season accuracy rate for goalies labeled “Confirmed” is 99.9%. That is the service’s own reported figure; the cited material does not specify the seasons or provide independent validation. It should not be treated as a guarantee that a goalie will play.
Starting-goalie reports can change close to puck drop. NHL.com’s fantasy index, for instance, listed projected lineups and starting goalies for October 3, 2026. Recheck a current report as your league’s deadline approaches rather than relying on an earlier listing.

3. Compare your options using your league’s scoring
Before choosing between the uncertain goalie and your alternative, check which goalie results your league rewards or penalizes. Leagues differ: some award points for individual outcomes and volume, while others use category standings.
What scoring changes about the decision
CBS’s 2026–27 Free Fantasy Hockey rules provide one points-league example: five points for a win, three for a shutout, 0.2 points per save, and minus one point per goal against. Its rules also describe standard goalie roto categories as wins, save percentage, and goals-against average. Your league may use different values or categories, so consult its settings rather than importing CBS’s example.

NHL.com’s 2026–27 goalie rankings identify wins, goals-against average, save percentage, and shutouts as standard categories. The rankings are a season-level valuation aid, not a live confirmation of who will start in a particular game.
Factors to weigh for both goalies
- Report strength and freshness: Is either goalie confirmed, or are both merely projected? How recently was the report updated?
- Likely workload: Consider the expected start and the goalie’s role in the team’s rotation.
- Injury and team situation: Check for relevant injury news and whether the team’s goalie situation makes the expected start uncertain.
- Matchup and goal support: Consider the opponent and the expected scoring support from the goalie’s team.
- Roster cost: Think about what you lose by benching either goalie and whether your league’s scoring favors volume, efficiency, wins, or shutouts.
NHL.com lists past production, goalie situations, anticipated starts, projected team goal support, and injury history among the factors used in its goalie valuations. These can help frame a comparison, but they do not resolve a live start decision by themselves.

4. Make the call before the deadline
- Confirm the exact lock time for your goalie slot in your league settings.
- Check the newest credible starting-goalie report and distinguish a projection from a sourced likelihood or confirmation.
- Compare the uncertain goalie with your alternative using your league’s scoring, expected workload, matchup, and roster needs.
- If the status remains open at lock, choose based on the available evidence and accept that the start may not be confirmed in time.
The right choice depends on your platform’s deadline, your league’s scoring, your roster alternatives, and the latest report. A season ranking or a “game-time decision” label alone cannot determine whether to start or bench the goalie.
