What to Do If You’ve Lost Access to Your Bitcoin Wallet

First determine whether you lost access to a self-custody wallet or to an exchange account. A self-custody wallet can usually be restored only with its recovery phrase or wallet backup, plus any additional passphrase and the correct wallet settings. An exchange account requires that exchange’s own account-recovery process. If the original wallet device still opens, do not reset it; use its official backup or export instructions immediately. If both the backup and access to the original self-custody wallet are gone, the bitcoin may be permanently inaccessible.

Never give a recovery phrase, private key, PIN or passphrase to support, a website, an app, or anyone offering “recovery.” Legitimate support does not need those secrets, and bitcoin sent as an unlocking fee cannot be reversed.

Identify who controls the wallet

The recovery route depends on custody, not on the word “wallet” in an app’s name.

Self-custody wallet

With self-custody, your wallet software or hardware device uses keys that you control. You may have a recovery phrase, a wallet-backup file, a hardware device, a PIN, and possibly an extra passphrase. No central company keeps a master copy of those keys for you. A compatible wallet can restore access when you have the correct backup and settings.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Exchange or other custodial account

An exchange account is controlled through the provider’s account system. You normally sign in with an email address, username, password, authenticator or identity checks rather than restoring a seed phrase in a wallet app. Go to the provider’s independently verified official website or app and use its account-recovery process. There is no single recovery procedure that applies to every exchange, so do not follow self-custody seed-restoration instructions for a custodial account.

Inventory everything that may still work

Before deleting an app, resetting hardware or responding to a stranger, write down what remains without recording secret words in an online document.

  • The original phone, computer or hardware wallet, and whether it still unlocks.
  • The recovery phrase, seed, wallet-backup file or other backup you deliberately created.
  • Any additional passphrase, sometimes called a hidden-wallet or “25th-word” passphrase.
  • The device PIN, app password, two-factor authenticator and account email, where relevant.
  • The wallet’s model, app version, backup standard, account type, derivation or network settings and any multisignature arrangement.
  • A provider-specific backup that you intentionally enabled. Bitcoin.com, for example, documents an optional cloud-backup feature in its app; that feature should not be assumed to exist in other wallets.

Keep partial phrases, screenshots and device details private. They can help you recognize your own backup, but they can also help an attacker target you.

Choose the recovery path

What remains Safe next action Likely outcome
Exchange login problem Use the exchange’s verified official account-recovery channel. Account access may be restored after the provider’s checks.
Self-custody device lost or damaged; compatible phrase or backup available Use the wallet maker’s current restore procedure on a compatible device or wallet. The existing wallet can be restored if the format, settings and any passphrase match.
Self-custody device still opens; written backup missing Do not reset or wipe it. Follow the maker’s official backup or export instructions while it remains usable. You may be able to create a secure backup or move funds to a newly backed-up wallet.
Device and backup both unavailable; extra passphrase also missing Search only your own offline records. Ignore guaranteed-recovery offers. Access may be permanently lost.

If the device is lost or damaged but the backup exists

Use a replacement device or wallet that explicitly supports the original backup format and configuration. Buying a replacement hardware wallet helps only when you have a valid, compatible backup; it cannot recreate a missing phrase or forgotten passphrase.

Check the backup format and setup

Formats are not universal. Trezor’s official backup guidance describes 12- or 24-word BIP39 backups and 20-word SLIP39 backups, depending on the device. Other wallets can use different standards, account paths or import formats. A phrase can be genuine yet restore an empty-looking account if you select the wrong wallet type, account, network, derivation configuration or passphrase.

If the original wallet used multisignature accounts, you also need the required cosigner information and the same wallet configuration. A single seed may not be enough to reconstruct that arrangement.

Restore only through the official procedure

  1. Obtain the wallet maker’s current instructions from its verified website or documentation, and confirm the exact model and supported backup standard.
  2. Initialize or reset the replacement device only as the maker directs. A reset normally erases the device, so do not perform it on a device that might still contain the only accessible wallet.
  3. Enter the recovery words only when the physical device or the wallet’s documented secure workflow requests them. Trezor specifically warns users never to type backup words into an app or website merely to verify them.
  4. Recreate the original account and passphrase settings. An additional passphrase creates a different key set; the seed alone may open a different, apparently empty wallet.
  5. Verify receiving addresses on the trusted device and compare them with records you already have before moving funds.

Ledger’s guidance says a reset device can restore keys from its 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase, while Trezor documents restoring an existing wallet and, for some models, resetting after a forgotten PIN and then restoring. These are vendor-specific examples, not a universal sequence for every wallet.

If the original device still works but the backup is missing

This is the situation in which preserving the device matters most. Do not factory-reset it, uninstall the wallet, discard it or perform an update that you have not checked against the provider’s instructions.

Use the wallet’s own backup controls

Open the official help for the exact wallet and look for its backup, recovery, export or verify-backup procedure. Some wallets show a recovery phrase only during initial setup. Trezor states that its backup is displayed once during setup, so you should not assume an existing phrase can be revealed later from the device.

Bitcoin.org notes that backup requirements depend on the wallet: some wallets require repeated backups, while modern deterministic wallets can restore many accounts from one recovery phrase. Follow the instructions for your particular software or hardware rather than copying a generic seed-export procedure from a forum.

Move funds only after you have a secure destination

If the provider’s official documentation permits it, create a new wallet with a newly generated and securely stored backup, then transfer funds from the still-accessible wallet. Confirm every destination address on the trusted device and send a small test amount first when the wallet’s normal security process supports that approach. Account for network fees and remember that bitcoin transactions are irreversible. Do not make a transfer if you cannot verify the destination or if someone is directing the process through unsolicited remote access.

If the seed phrase restores an empty wallet

An empty balance does not by itself prove that the phrase is wrong. Check, using the original wallet’s official documentation, whether you have selected:

Do not send the phrase to customer support for diagnosis. Support can explain public settings and documented recovery steps without seeing private words. If the phrase may have been exposed, treat it as compromised and follow the provider’s official process for moving funds to a newly generated wallet whose backup has never been disclosed.

PINs, passwords and passphrases are different

Hardware-wallet PIN

A hardware-wallet PIN unlocks that physical device; it is not the recovery seed. Some makers document a reset followed by restoration when the PIN is forgotten. That procedure is safe only if the correct backup is already available. Resetting without a verified backup can destroy your only practical access.

Wallet encryption passphrase

Bitcoin Core distinguishes the wallet passphrase from the seed. The passphrase protects or encrypts wallet data, while the seed represents key material. Losing the passphrase can permanently block access even when the underlying wallet files remain.

Additional wallet passphrase

An extra passphrase used with a hardware wallet or seed is not interchangeable with the seed words. Trezor’s product documentation describes an additional passphrase as producing a different seed and key set. Entering no passphrase, or a slightly different one, can open a valid but empty wallet.

If both the backup and the original device are gone

Set expectations plainly: a self-custody provider cannot generally recreate private keys that were never backed up. Bitcoin.org’s developer documentation warns that keys lost before backup can mean permanent loss. Ledger says it cannot recover a phrase or PIN after a device is reset or inaccessible, and Trezor explains that losing both the wallet backup and access to a lost or permanently damaged device can make funds inaccessible. Bitcoin Core also warns that a lost passphrase can make the protected wallet permanently unusable.

You can search your own legitimate records: a paper backup stored in a safe place, a deliberately created encrypted backup file, or a documented provider backup that you knowingly enabled. Do not give partial words, device access or a remote desktop session to a person promising guaranteed recovery. The authoritative guidance does not support a general promise that brute-force services or blockchain searches can reconstruct a missing phrase or passphrase.

How to recognize and avoid recovery scams

People who lose wallet access are frequent targets because scammers know the victim is anxious and may act quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Never type a recovery phrase into a normal website, browser extension, email, form, chat or “validation” tool.
  • Never send a private key, PIN, wallet password or additional passphrase to anyone.
  • Never install remote-access software because an unsolicited helper asks you to.
  • Never send bitcoin as a “recovery fee” or to unlock an account. Bitcoin.org says no legitimate person, business or support team will require bitcoin for that purpose.
  • Use bookmarks or independently verified addresses for official support rather than links sent in social-media messages.

Trezor states: “We will never ask you for your wallet backup, even if you are speaking with our customer support.” Its backup guidance also says: “Never type your words into any app or website to verify this.” These warnings apply even when a message appears to know your device model or transaction history.

Prevent the next lockout

After recovery, create a deliberate backup plan rather than relying on the device itself.

  1. Write the recovery words exactly as the wallet displays them and verify the order using the wallet’s official check.
  2. Store the backup offline in a location protected from theft, fire and water. Bitcoin.org recommends multiple secure physical locations and durable storage media.
  3. Do not save a seed phrase as a screenshot or ordinary photo, and do not place it in email or unencrypted cloud storage. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ specifically advises against photos and cloud storage; Trezor advises against digital copies.
  4. Record the wallet model, account configuration and whether an additional passphrase is required, but keep that information separate from the secret words when doing so improves security.
  5. Test that you understand the documented restore process without exposing the phrase. A durable metal backup plate can help protect a future backup, but it cannot recreate an already-missing phrase.

Keep provider instructions current. Wallet interfaces, supported formats and recovery steps can change; the exact model and software version matter more than a generic online checklist.
