If an Xbox gift card, code, or gifted game has not appeared, first identify exactly what was purchased and who sold it. A gift card or download code is redeemed to a Microsoft account; a gifted digital game is a different transaction. Microsoft Order history is the right place to investigate a Microsoft Store purchase, while the original retailer must investigate an order it sold. Do not buy the item again until you have checked the correct account and the order status.
Buying an Xbox game does not, by itself, establish that a separate gift card will be emailed. The recovery steps below cover both common meanings of “my Xbox gift card never arrived”: a code or stored-balance gift card that is missing, and a digital game gift that the recipient cannot find.

The phrase “Xbox gift card” can describe two different purchases. Choosing the wrong support route can delay resolution, so settle this before checking delivery.

A Microsoft or Xbox gift card or download code
This is a code or balance product intended to be redeemed to a Microsoft account. It is separate from the game itself. If you paid for a code and never received it, the issue is a missing code or retailer delivery, not necessarily a missing game license.

A gifted digital Xbox game
This is a digital game purchased as a gift for another person. It is a separate transaction type from a gift card. If the recipient cannot find the game, investigate the game purchase rather than looking for a gift-card balance.
Why the distinction matters
- The seller and order record may differ for a code and a gifted game.
- A missing listing does not prove that payment completed.
- There is no established rule that buying a game automatically generates a gift card email.
Identify who sold the item
The seller determines who can see the transaction and investigate delivery.

Microsoft’s code guidance directs customers to contact the retailer when the wrong code was purchased. The same ownership principle applies when a retailer’s delivery is missing: the retailer controls its own order and fulfillment record. Microsoft can investigate Microsoft Store transactions, but it cannot be assumed to have access to another seller’s order.
Check Microsoft Order history before contacting support
Use the Microsoft account that made the purchase. If someone else paid, ask that person to perform the check or provide the order details; a recipient’s account may not contain the purchaser’s transaction.
- Sign in to Microsoft Order history. Use the Microsoft account used during checkout. If the order is absent, try any other Microsoft account that may have been used.
- Allow a short posting delay. Microsoft Support says, “Recent purchases may take a few minutes to appear.” A purchase that is not visible immediately is not proof that it failed or that it was sent to another account.
- Open the order details. Record the order number, item description, purchase date, account, and any confirmation or receipt.
- Read the displayed status. Microsoft defines Completed and Redeemed as charges that have posted. In progress means the charge has not yet posted to the payment option.
- Compare the record with what you expected. Check whether the order is for a gift card or code, a digital game, or another item. A confirmed game order will not necessarily produce a separate gift-card entry.
Save screenshots or a downloaded receipt if available. Keeping the status and order number together makes a support conversation more precise and helps prevent a duplicate purchase while the first transaction is being checked.

What each order status means for your next step

A status alone does not tell you that a separate email was sent, nor does an absent listing prove that the payment completed. Use the order record, item description, and seller together.
If Microsoft sold the missing item
For a Microsoft Store purchase, use the order details as the basis for a Microsoft Support request. Explain which of these applies:
- A Microsoft/Xbox gift card or download code is missing.
- A digital game was bought as a gift, but the intended recipient cannot find it.
- The order is visible but its status or item description does not match what was expected.
Include the Microsoft account used for payment, order number, purchase date, item name, displayed status, and the payment evidence or receipt. State whether you are the purchaser or the recipient. That distinction helps support locate the transaction without guessing which account owns it.
When a digital game purchase is confirmed
Microsoft says digital software, including Xbox games, appears in Order history. If a Microsoft-purchased digital game is confirmed there but cannot be found, contact Microsoft Support with the order details. Do not recast the problem as a gift-card delivery unless the order actually identifies a gift card or code.
When a code or balance gift card is confirmed
Tell Microsoft Support that the paid item was a stored-balance gift card or download code and that it has not been received or cannot be located. Ask support to investigate the specific order. The available guidance does not establish a universal resend button, delivery deadline, or automatic replacement process, so do not rely on an assumed feature.

If another retailer sold the item
Start with the retailer, not Microsoft. Use the retailer’s order number and the merchant shown on your payment record. Send:

- Order number or confirmation reference
- Purchase date and the item purchased
- Account or email used at checkout
- Payment evidence showing the charge
- A clear description of what is missing: code, balance gift card, or gifted game
Ask the retailer to verify whether its order was accepted, fulfilled, delivered, cancelled, or still pending. Keep the original confirmation and all replies. If the retailer says no order exists, compare its claimed merchant name with your bank or payment record before opening another case with a different seller.
Microsoft Order history cannot be treated as a universal log for third-party transactions. A retailer purchase may be absent there even when the retailer charged you correctly.
Common situations and the correct branch
“The purchase is not in Order history.”
Try the other Microsoft accounts that could have been used and allow a few minutes for a recent purchase to appear. If the payment record names a retailer, investigate that retailer instead. Do not interpret the missing listing as confirmation that the charge failed.
“The order says In progress.”
Because Microsoft defines this status as a charge that has not yet posted to the payment option, wait for the order to update and monitor the account used for checkout. Keep the receipt or authorization evidence. Making a second purchase can create a duplicate charge if the first order later completes.

“The order says Completed or Redeemed, but nothing arrived.”
Those statuses mean the charge has posted. Confirm the item type and seller in the order details, then contact that seller with the order number and proof of payment. For a Microsoft purchase, contact Microsoft Support; for a retailer purchase, contact the retailer.
“I bought a game, but expected a gift card email.”
Check the order description. A digital game and a gift card are separate products, and the available official guidance does not establish that a game purchase automatically sends a gift card. If the order is a digital game, follow the digital-game support route.
“The recipient cannot find a gifted game.”
Have the purchaser check the account that paid and confirm that the order is for a gifted digital game. If Microsoft sold it, provide that order to Microsoft Support. If another retailer sold it, the retailer must investigate its own delivery record. The available guidance does not establish a universal recipient-side resend control, so avoid promising one.
“I used the wrong account.”
Return to Order history and sign in with the account used to make the payment. A recipient’s Microsoft account, a family member’s account, or a second personal account may not show the purchaser’s record. Give support the account information and order evidence rather than creating another order.
Refunds are possible only in qualifying cases
Do not assume that a missing code or undelivered gift automatically qualifies for a refund. Microsoft says some games and apps bought from Microsoft may be eligible for a refund request through Xbox Order history. Eligibility is purchase-specific, and digital goods are generally not returnable unless the offer or applicable law allows it.
If the transaction was bought from Microsoft, review the refund option associated with that order in Xbox Order history and submit the request only if the order presents that option. Explain the missing delivery or access problem accurately. If another retailer sold the item, use that retailer’s refund process; Microsoft’s eligibility rules do not guarantee a refund for a third-party purchase.
Refund terms can change and may depend on the product, region, account, and transaction circumstances. Treat any support response about eligibility as specific to that order rather than as a general promise.
Information to gather before opening a case
- The merchant or seller name shown on the payment record
- The Microsoft account or retailer account used to purchase
- Order number, purchase date, and item description
- Displayed status: In progress, Completed, or Redeemed
- Receipt, confirmation message, and payment evidence
- Whether the missing item is a code, balance gift card, or digital game gift
- For a gift, whether you are the purchaser or intended recipient
Never send a full payment-card number or account password in a support message. Provide the order evidence requested through the seller’s official support channel.

- Do not buy a replacement code before checking the original account and status.
- Do not assume an absent Order history entry means the payment failed.
- Do not assume a completed game purchase includes a separate gift card.
- Do not send a Microsoft case for a retailer order unless Microsoft specifically asks for information about it.
- Do not promise yourself or the recipient a resend or refund when the seller has not confirmed eligibility.
- Do not discard the receipt, order number, or payment evidence while the case is open.
A compact decision path
- Classify the item: code or gift card, or gifted digital game.
- Classify the seller: Microsoft Store or another retailer.
- Check the purchaser’s account: use Microsoft Order history for Microsoft transactions and the retailer’s account for retailer transactions.
- Read the status: In progress has not posted; Completed or Redeemed has posted.
- Contact the seller named on the order: Microsoft Support for Microsoft purchases, the original retailer for retailer purchases.
- Consider a refund only through the relevant order system: eligibility is conditional and digital goods are generally nonreturnable unless an offer or applicable law allows it.
This sequence separates an account lookup problem from a payment-posting problem and from a seller-delivery problem. It also gives support the exact evidence needed to investigate without creating a second transaction.
