If your VPS is sending scans, floods, exploit attempts or other unauthorized traffic, treat it as an active security incident. Confirm that the traffic is not an approved job, notify your hosting provider, isolate the VPS without destroying evidence, investigate the scope, rotate every exposed credential, and usually rebuild from a trusted image when privileged access is possible. Do not simply close an abuse ticket or delete a suspicious process and put the server back online.

First response: contain the harm without losing the evidence
The order of your first actions matters. Your goals are to stop the VPS from harming other networks, preserve information that can explain the compromise, and establish a documented incident record.

1. Confirm the alert and open a security ticket
Check whether the reported connections are authorized. A vulnerability scan, load test, backup transfer or customer-approved integration can resemble malicious traffic, but do not assume that explanation without verification. Compare the report with scheduled jobs, deployment records, monitoring data and the application owner’s change history.
Open the provider’s abuse or security ticket immediately, even while you investigate. Record the ticket number and create an incident timeline. Capture the VPS address, the time zone and timestamps, destination addresses, destination ports, transport protocol, approximate volume, and the provider’s original evidence. Ask whether the provider can supply flow records, packet samples or a temporary network block. Keep all communication in the incident record.

2. Isolate the VPS
Use the provider console, security group, virtual network policy, host firewall or an equivalent network control to disconnect or quarantine the instance. Prefer a reversible network isolation that blocks both inbound administration and outbound traffic while leaving the disk available for examination. If the provider can place the VPS in a quarantine network, request that option.
Isolation should be coordinated with the people responsible for the application and the provider. CISA’s incident-response guidance emphasizes coordinated isolation of affected systems. Do not keep the server online merely to preserve uptime while it continues attacking other systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you cannot disconnect the network, power down only as a last resort. CISA’s guidance says, “Power down devices if you are unable to disconnect them from the network to avoid further spread of the ransomware infection.” A shutdown can erase volatile information such as running processes, memory contents and live connections, so first collect what you can safely and document the decision.
Preserve evidence before cleanup
Evidence is useful for finding the entry point, proving what was affected and showing the provider that containment occurred. Preserve it before deleting accounts, killing processes or reinstalling the operating system whenever the situation allows.
Collect provider and network records
- Export provider flow logs, firewall events, security-group changes and console audit logs.
- Save authentication records, including successful and failed SSH or control-panel logins.
- Copy reverse-proxy, web-server, application, database and system logs relevant to the reported period.
- Record the VPS image identifier, attached volumes, snapshots, public addresses and network configuration.
- Preserve deployment-system, source-control, CI/CD and secrets-manager audit events that show access from the VPS.
Capture host state when it is safe
From an isolated system, record the process list, open files, listening ports, active connections, logged-in users, mounted volumes, scheduled tasks, systemd services, shell history and recent package changes. Look for files and directories that are commonly used for persistence, but do not assume that a clean-looking process list proves the host is safe.

If the incident is serious or root-level compromise is suspected, have a qualified responder capture memory and a forensic disk image. Keep the original snapshot or volume isolated and work from a copy. Maintain an evidence log showing who collected each item, when it was collected, where it was stored and whether it was hashed or otherwise protected from alteration. CISA’s playbook calls for perimeter, network and endpoint data, memory and disk images when needed, and a detailed evidence log. Its guidance also says to “Preserve evidence that is highly volatile in nature—or limited in retention—to prevent loss or tampering.”
Determine how far the compromise extends
Do not limit the investigation to the process that generated the abuse report. A VPS may have been used as a launch point, a relay, a cryptocurrency miner, a botnet node or a staging host, and the attacker may have reached other systems through credentials stored on it.
Check accounts, keys and persistence
- List local users, administrator memberships, recently created accounts and changes to SSH authorized-key files.
- Review provider API tokens, deployment keys, cloud credentials, database passwords, certificates and environment variables that the host could read.
- Inspect cron entries, systemd units, startup scripts, shell profiles, web-root files and scheduled jobs for persistence.
- Look for web shells, altered binaries, unexpected containers, container images and files with recent or suspicious timestamps.
- Check listening ports and outbound connections for services that are not part of the documented design.
Correlate activity against a normal baseline
Compare outbound destinations, ports, connection rates and data volume with the VPS’s normal behavior. Correlate host logs with firewall, reverse-proxy, provider-console and identity-provider records. Search for command-and-control infrastructure, repeated authentication failures, unusual administrative sessions and changes made shortly before the traffic began.
Determine whether the same credentials, images, automation jobs or network policies were shared with other servers. If the VPS accessed a source repository, backup store, database or management system, investigate those systems as potentially exposed rather than treating the VPS as an isolated problem.
Choose between in-place cleanup and a rebuild
In-place cleanup can preserve service availability, but it cannot give high confidence that a privileged attacker left no hidden access. A rebuild creates more downtime and migration work, yet it establishes a clearer trust boundary when you have a known-good image, infrastructure-as-code template and clean data backups.

| Response option | Containment speed | Evidence preservation | Confidence in eradication | Downtime | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-place investigation and cleanup | Fast once isolated | Can preserve the original host for examination | Lower when root access or system integrity is uncertain | Usually lower | A narrowly scoped, non-privileged event where integrity can be demonstrated |
| Rebuild from a trusted image or template | Requires preparation | Original disk snapshot can remain isolated | Higher when the image and data are verified clean | Usually higher | Root compromise, modified binaries, unknown persistence or any doubt about system integrity |
Base the decision on containment speed, evidence requirements, confidence in eradication, acceptable downtime, the availability of a known-good image, and the skill of the response team. If a clean rebuild path exists and privileged compromise is plausible, rebuilding is generally safer than trusting an in-place cleanup.
Eradicate the intrusion and recover service
Rotate every credential the VPS could reach
Assume that any secret readable by the compromised operating system may have been copied. Rotate local passwords, SSH keys, provider API tokens, deployment secrets, database credentials, certificates, signing keys and service-account tokens. Revoke old credentials rather than merely creating replacements. Check logs for use of each credential from unfamiliar addresses and rotate shared secrets on related systems as well.
Perform rotation from a trusted workstation or a clean administrative host, not from the suspect VPS. Update automation and applications to use the new values, and remove secrets that are no longer required.
Patch the exploited service
Identify the initial access vector if possible: an unpatched package, exposed management interface, weak credential, vulnerable application, unsafe container or misconfigured network rule. Patch or replace the affected component before restoration. If the entry point is unknown, assume that simply applying one update is insufficient and use the rebuild and hardening steps below.

- Keep the original VPS disk or snapshot isolated and label it as evidence.
- Validate the operating-system image, application artifact and infrastructure-as-code version from a trusted source.
- Create a replacement instance in a restricted network with no unnecessary public exposure.
- Restore only data that has been checked for tampering and malware; do not copy system binaries, startup scripts or unknown application files from the compromised disk.
- Install current security updates, configure access controls and load freshly rotated credentials.
- Run integrity checks, vulnerability scans and functional tests before allowing production traffic.
If you cannot verify backups or a clean image, involve managed incident-response or digital-forensics support before destroying the only copy of the system state.

Reconnect only after hardening the replacement
Returning an unmodified or partially cleaned VPS to the Internet risks a second incident. Before lifting quarantine:
- Restrict SSH or other administration to a VPN, bastion or explicitly approved source addresses, and disable unused management services.
- Apply least privilege to users, service accounts, containers and file permissions.
- Use egress controls to limit which destinations and ports the application can reach. Deny by default where the workload permits it.
- Enable centralized collection of authentication, firewall, provider-console, application and system logs.
- Set alerts for unusual outbound volume, new destinations, scanning patterns, privilege changes, new keys and unexpected listening ports.
- Verify that backups and golden images are recent, restorable and protected from modification by the VPS.
Reintroduce traffic gradually. Watch outbound connections and authentication events during the first hours and days, and keep the old snapshot isolated until the investigation and any provider questions are complete.
Close the abuse report and document the incident
Send the provider a factual update with the ticket number, isolation time, current status, relevant indicators of compromise and the actions taken to prevent further traffic. If the provider supplied destinations or timestamps, explain which logs you matched and whether the traffic stopped after isolation. Avoid speculation about an attacker’s identity.
Maintain a final timeline covering detection, decisions, evidence collection, isolation, credential revocation, rebuild or cleanup, testing and reconnection. Record affected accounts, systems, indicators, data-access concerns, business impact and corrective actions. Preserve the provider’s notices and your exports according to your retention policy.
Consider notifying CISA, law enforcement, a sector-specific response contact or affected customers when the event involves significant criminal activity, sensitive data or material service impact. Notification duties depend on your jurisdiction, contracts, sector rules and the facts established during the investigation; obtain legal advice where required.

Use established incident-response guidance
NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3, published in 2025, is the current NIST incident-response recommendations document and supersedes Rev. 2. NIST says Rev. 3 “seeks to assist organizations with incorporating incident response recommendations and considerations throughout their cybersecurity risk management activities.” Rev. 2, authored by Paul R. Cichonski, Thomas Millar, Timothy Grance and Karen Scarfone and published by NIST in 2012 with a 2021 update, remains a useful incident-handling reference but is not the current revision.
The CISA Federal Government Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks (2024) provide practical direction on preserving perimeter, network and endpoint data, capturing memory and disk images when needed, determining scope and maintaining an evidence log. Their procedures can be adapted to a hosted VPS even when you do not control the provider’s physical infrastructure.
Prevent a repeat compromise
After recovery, turn the incident’s causes into specific engineering changes. Remove direct public access to administrative services, enforce multi-factor authentication where available, use short-lived credentials, separate production and management networks, and keep operating systems and exposed applications patched. Treat provider API tokens and deployment secrets as high-impact credentials with narrow permissions and rapid revocation paths.
Establish a normal outbound-traffic baseline for each workload. Centralized security logging, VPS monitoring and egress-control tools can make a future abuse report actionable within minutes instead of hours. Test restoration from a golden image and clean backup on a schedule, and rehearse who can isolate a VPS, approve a rebuild, rotate secrets and communicate with the provider.
A VPS that sends attack traffic is not merely a billing or reputation problem. Stop the traffic, preserve volatile evidence, determine what the attacker could access, rebuild when trust in the host is uncertain, rotate every reachable secret, and reconnect only after controls and monitoring are demonstrably in place.
