What to Do if Your Train Ticket Shows a Different Station or Route

If your ticket names a different station, route, operator or train from the journey you intended, do not assume it is valid. Compare the ticket with your plan, then contact the retailer that sold it before you travel. The fare conditions decide whether it can be changed, whether a fee or fare difference applies, or whether you need another ticket.

My train ticket shows a different station: what matters first

A rail ticket is issued for the journey described on the ticket and in the conditions attached to that fare. Your intended journey alone does not establish validity. Check the exact details printed or displayed in the booking:

  • Origin and destination: confirm both stations, including the station named for any connection.
  • Route: look for wording such as a permitted route, a named route, or a route restricted to a particular operator.
  • Train company and service: some tickets identify the operator or a specific reserved train.
  • Date and time: an incorrect date or a time-specific reservation can be as important as a station mismatch.
  • Reservation and fare type: identify whether the ticket is an Advance fare, another restricted fare, or a ticket with different change rules.

Keep the booking confirmation, the ticket itself and any reservation details together while you investigate. National Rail describes the ticket and applicable Conditions of Travel as part of the agreement for travel on its network, so the wording attached to your fare controls what you may do.

What to do before you leave

  1. Write down the intended journey and the issued journey. Note the station you expected, the station actually shown, the route you planned, and any train you selected. This makes it easier for the seller to identify the error.
  2. Read the restrictions on the ticket. Check whether the ticket specifies an operator, route, train, date or change deadline. Do not rely on a general assumption that rail tickets are interchangeable.
  3. Contact the retailer promptly. The retailer is the company or website that took the booking and issued the ticket. National Rail advises telling that retailer as soon as you realise the mistake because it may be able to resolve the problem immediately.
  4. Ask for the available remedy in writing. Ask whether the ticket can be corrected, exchanged or rebooked; whether the origin, destination or route must remain unchanged; and whether a fare difference, exchange fee or service fee will apply.
  5. Wait for clear confirmation before boarding. If the seller cannot resolve the problem, ask railway staff before entering the journey. Do not treat a barcode, seat reservation or successful purchase as proof that a different route is covered.

Use the retailer’s stated process for an exchange or refund. A change is only available when the ticket conditions permit it, and the seller may have to reprice the journey.

Can I still use my train ticket?

There is no single answer for every ticket. The next step depends on when you discovered the mismatch and why the journey differs.

Situation What to verify Practical next step
Booking error found before travel Whether the fare permits an amendment or exchange, and whether a fee or fare difference applies Ask the retailer to correct or exchange the ticket before departure.
Different station or route discovered after travel has started Whether the ticket covers the train and journey you are currently making Speak to staff and contact the retailer. You may need to buy another ticket first; retain evidence for any later request.
Route changed because of disruption Current operator instructions and whether an alternative route has been authorised Follow the disruption instructions rather than treating the situation as a booking error.
Advance or train-specific fare The reserved train, route, operator and deadline for changes Contact the retailer before the first reserved train departs. The cited National Rail Advance First Class terms do not allow changes on board.

The table describes decision points, not an automatic entitlement. The ticket’s own terms and the instructions of the relevant railway remain decisive.

How different fare types affect a station or route mismatch

Advance fares

National Rail’s Advance First Class terms are especially restrictive. A change must be arranged before departure of the first reserved train. Under those cited terms, the origin, destination and route or train company must remain the same. A change may involve both a fee and the difference between the original and new fares, and changes cannot be made on board the train.

Do not extend those rules automatically to every Advance ticket, class or operator. Use the conditions attached to your particular booking and ask the retailer to confirm the applicable deadline.

Other Great Britain tickets

For other tickets in Great Britain, National Rail says route or reservation changes depend on the ticket conditions. The Office of Rail and Road similarly explains that a passenger may be able to change the journey in line with those conditions, with a fare difference potentially payable. That wording means “may,” not a guaranteed right to switch stations or trains.

Ask the seller to assess the exact ticket rather than buying a replacement speculatively. The seller can tell you whether the original ticket must be surrendered, whether a new fare is required, and which charges apply.

Eurostar tickets

Eurostar provides a separate operator-specific example. Its conditions state that using a ticket for a station other than the one specified requires payment of the appropriate full fare for the additional journey portion. Other changes can also be subject to the ticket’s fare conditions, exchange or service fees, and fare differences.

This is not a universal rule for every railway. Treat it as a reminder to read the conditions of the operator named on your ticket and to ask that operator or the selling retailer before travelling.

If you have already started the journey

Once a train has departed, your options can narrow. National Rail’s wrong-ticket guidance says you may need to buy another ticket if you discover the mistake after beginning the journey. Customer services may later consider a refund when you provide evidence of the mistake, but that consideration is discretionary and is not a promise of reimbursement.

Take these steps as soon as you notice the problem:

  1. Tell the onboard or station staff what happened. Explain the station, route or train shown on the ticket and the journey you are actually attempting.
  2. Ask what ticket is required for the current journey. If staff advise a new purchase, ask for the receipt and keep the original ticket as well.
  3. Contact the original retailer. Give it the booking reference, the time you noticed the error, and the advice you received from railway staff.
  4. Preserve evidence. Keep the confirmation, both tickets, receipts and any written communication. Evidence supports a later request but does not guarantee that the original fare will be refunded.

Do not conceal the mismatch until an inspection. Explaining it promptly gives staff and the retailer the best chance to determine the correct fare and record what occurred.

When the route is different because of disruption

A planned booking error and an operational disruption are different cases. If a cancellation, closure or major network problem forces you away from the route printed on your ticket, check the railway’s current instructions and the ticket conditions before choosing another service.

National Rail says that during major network disruption passengers are usually allowed to complete their journey by another reasonable route. That permission is tied to the disruption and the instructions in force at the time; it does not turn an incorrectly booked ticket into a generally flexible ticket. Some services can remain restricted even while alternative routing is authorised.

  • Check the operator’s disruption notice or station announcement.
  • Ask staff whether the proposed alternative route is accepted for your ticket.
  • Keep screenshots, announcements or other evidence showing the disruption and the advice you followed.
  • If no alternative is authorised, ask before buying a new ticket so you understand whether any later claim is possible.

How to contact the ticket seller effectively

Use the seller that issued the booking, not only the railway company operating the train. A retailer can access the transaction and apply the fare’s exchange or refund process. Have the following information ready:

  • Booking reference and passenger name
  • Ticket type and any route, operator or train restriction
  • Printed origin and destination
  • Station or route you intended to book
  • Date of travel and, if relevant, the first reserved train
  • Whether travel has started
  • Any receipt or evidence of a replacement ticket

A clear request is more useful than simply saying the ticket is wrong. For example: “My ticket shows [the station and route printed on the ticket], but I intended to travel [the intended station and route]. Travel has [not started/started]. Can you confirm whether this fare can be amended or exchanged, the deadline, and every fee or fare difference?” Keep variable details inside the message you send; the seller’s response should state what is authorised.

National Rail’s published advice is direct: “Please tell the retailer who sold you it as soon as you realise your mistake, they might be able to resolve the problem then and there.”

Common mistakes that make the situation worse

  • Boarding first and asking later: route and station permissions can depend on the fare, and an Advance First Class change cannot be made on board under the cited terms.
  • Assuming a nearby station is equivalent: a different station is a different journey component unless the operator or ticket conditions say otherwise.
  • Changing only the train time: a ticket can restrict the origin, destination, route and operator as well as the departure time.
  • Discarding the original booking: the retailer may need the original details to assess an exchange or any later refund request.
  • Confusing disruption with a booking error: alternative-route permissions arise from the disruption instructions and may not apply to a ticket bought for the wrong journey.
  • Treating a possible refund as guaranteed: after-travel refunds can be considered when evidence is supplied, but the cited guidance does not promise approval.

Where these rules apply

The National Rail and Office of Rail and Road guidance described here concerns passenger travel in Great Britain. Eurostar’s station and fare rule is specific to Eurostar. Railways in other countries, and individual operators within them, can use different ticket contracts, passenger-rights rules and exchange deadlines.

For a journey outside Great Britain, start with the retailer and the operator named on the ticket, then consult the applicable national passenger-rights authority. Do not assume that a Great Britain route rule, a disruption permission or an Advance restriction carries over to another country.

A quick decision checklist

  • Does the ticket show the correct origin and destination?
  • Does it permit the route and operator you intend to use?
  • Is a specific train or reservation printed on it?
  • Has the first reserved train departed?
  • Is the difference caused by your booking or by a documented disruption?
  • Have you contacted the retailer that issued the ticket?
  • Have you obtained written confirmation of any change before boarding?
  • If you had to buy another ticket, have you kept the original, receipt and evidence?

Answering those questions will not itself change the ticket, but it gives the retailer or railway staff the information needed to apply the correct conditions.
