If you abandon the journey or cannot complete it, request a disruption-related refund from the retailer that sold your ticket. If you travel and arrive late, claim compensation from the train company under its Delay Repay or equivalent scheme. These are different remedies, and the applicable rules depend on your ticket, operator, route and journey date.
The guidance below reflects official National Rail and government information checked on 13 October 2026. It applies to National Rail services in Great Britain; live arrangements can change during a disruption.

Before you leave: check the timetable that actually applies
Planned engineering work can replace the normal timetable with an amended one. That amended timetable may also be the basis for calculating a later compensation claim, so save a copy or screenshot before travelling.

- Check the train operator’s own website, app, station display or customer-service update for the same date. Look for cancellation notices, revised departure times and platform changes.
- Compare your intended train with the amended timetable. A service that appears missing from the ordinary timetable may have been retimed, replaced by a bus or removed entirely.
- Read the stated arrangements for replacement buses, permitted routes and other operators before you set out. Ticket acceptance is not automatically universal.
- Keep your ticket, booking reference, planned train details and any disruption messages. You may need them for a refund or compensation claim.
Engineering notices are date-specific. A timetable published for one weekend may not apply to the following weekend, even when the same line is closed. Recheck shortly before departure because an operator can alter its plan or add restrictions.

If your train is cancelled or you are stranded
Ask for the authorised alternative first
At a station, ask staff which train, replacement bus or route your ticket is valid on. If staff are unavailable, use the operator’s live disruption page or social channel, then look for a written ticket-acceptance notice. Do not assume that a ticket for one operator is accepted by every company running on the route.
The National Rail Conditions of Travel 2026 say that, after a cancellation, passengers will normally be permitted to use up to two trains before or after the affected service on the same operator. If that arrangement is unsuitable, the operator should provide an appropriate alternative. Separate ticket-acceptance guidance commonly describes a two-hour window and identifies participating operators, but the live arrangement for your disruption takes priority.
Replacement buses and other routes
Replacement buses can take longer than the train and may use a different boarding point. Check whether your ticket is accepted on the bus, whether reservations are required and whether luggage, bicycles or accessibility equipment need a specific arrangement. If the notice directs you to a different rail route or operator, follow that instruction and retain evidence of it.

When no practical option is clear, ask the operator to confirm the route before boarding. A verbal instruction from station staff can be useful evidence if you later need to explain why your journey differed from the ticketed itinerary.
If you decide not to travel
If the cancellation or disruption means you abandon the journey, or you start but cannot complete it, stop travelling and contact the original retailer for a disruption-related refund. The retailer is the company that sold the ticket, such as a rail company or authorised ticket seller. Explain that the journey was not made, or was interrupted, because of the disruption and provide the ticket details.

Refund or compensation? Choose the remedy that matches what happened

A refund and a late-arrival compensation claim answer different questions. A refund addresses a journey you did not make or could not finish. Compensation addresses a journey you completed but arrived late. Follow the operator or retailer’s instructions rather than submitting the same journey indiscriminately to both systems.
How planned engineering work affects Delay Repay
For participating Delay Repay services, the operator may measure your arrival against an amended timetable that was published in advance for the engineering work. The relevant comparison is therefore not always the timetable that applied before the work was announced.

Use the amended arrival time shown in the notice when describing your journey. Record the train you intended to take, the replacement or later service you used, your actual arrival time and any station at which you changed. Operators set their own thresholds and calculations, and ticket type can affect the result. Check the responsible train company’s Passenger’s Charter and claim form for the applicable bands and deadline.
Information to include in a compensation claim
- Ticket image or booking confirmation, including any barcode or reference.
- Date, origin, destination and the planned train.
- The amended timetable or cancellation notice that applied that day.
- Actual departure and arrival details, including replacement-bus legs.
- Any message or staff instruction that authorised travel on another service.
- Bank or payment details only through the operator’s secure claim form.
Keep the original ticket until the claim is resolved. If you used a mobile ticket, save the confirmation and avoid deleting the email or app record.
What assistance is available after a long delay
Official government guidance states that, for delays over 60 minutes, passengers shall be offered free meals and refreshments when reasonably available. Where an overnight stay becomes necessary and is physically possible, the guidance describes accommodation and transport to it. It also describes transport when a train is blocked and alternative transport as soon as possible when the railway service cannot be provided.

These arrangements depend on availability, safety and practical feasibility. They are not a guarantee that a particular hotel, taxi or meal will be available at every station. Ask the operator or station staff what is being provided for the actual incident before paying for your own arrangements.

If the last train has gone
Tell staff that the disruption has made an overnight stay necessary and ask what accommodation or transport the operator can arrange. Obtain confirmation before booking privately where possible. If you must pay yourself because no assistance is available, keep itemised receipts and the operator’s written advice; reimbursement is governed by the operator’s policy and the circumstances of the disruption.
If the railway is blocked
Do not leave the station or walk along the track. Follow instructions for a bus or other specified transport. Ask where it departs, whether your ticket is accepted and whether you need to collect luggage before transferring.
Refund deadlines and the 1 April 2026 rule change
National Rail says refund rules changed on 1 April 2026 for listed ticket categories. For eligible Anytime, Off-Peak, Day Travelcard, Ranger and Rover tickets bought on or after that date, a change-of-mind refund request is generally due by 23:59 on the day before the ticket’s validity. This is an ordinary change-of-mind rule, not the separate right that can arise when disruption prevents travel.
Purchase date, ticket type and the reason for not travelling all matter. A ticket bought before 1 April 2026, or a ticket outside the listed categories, may have different terms. State clearly that the request concerns engineering-work disruption and check the exact conditions printed on the ticket or supplied by the retailer.

Common situations and the safest response
The train is cancelled before you leave home
Check the operator’s replacement plan, then choose an authorised alternative or do not travel. If you do not travel, apply to the original retailer for a disruption refund. Save the cancellation notice and the amended timetable.
The train is cancelled after you reach the station
Ask staff which later or earlier service is accepted. Under the 2026 National Rail Conditions, up to two earlier or later trains on the same operator will normally be allowed, with an appropriate alternative when that is unsuitable. Confirm any cross-operator permission before boarding.
You take a replacement bus and arrive late
Keep the ticket and note the bus and connecting train times. If you complete the journey, claim compensation from the responsible train company using the operator’s actual claim rules and the amended timetable where applicable.
You start travelling but turn back
Record where you stopped and why. Contact the original retailer for a refund because the journey could not be completed due to disruption. Do not present the trip as a completed late arrival.

- Actual arrival time if you completed the journey.
- Receipts and written authorisation for any assistance or alternative transport you paid for.
- Name of the retailer for a refund, or train company for compensation.
Submit promptly because each operator and retailer sets its own claim deadline. If a form asks whether you travelled, answer literally: “no,” “could not complete,” or “completed and arrived late.” That distinction directs the claim to the correct remedy.
What the official information does not establish
There is no single national compensation percentage, universal alternative route or guaranteed hotel arrangement for every engineering closure. The exact answer requires your journey date, origin and destination, ticket type, retailer and operating company. Live notices can also change after publication. Check those details before relying on a specific train, bus or payment amount.
Official material does not provide a topic-specific national statistic for engineering-work delays, cancellations or compensation. A fare-evasion statistic sometimes reported in general rail coverage does not measure this problem and should not be used to estimate your chance of delay or reimbursement.
