If your TP-Link router appears to have stopped updating, first find the exact model and hardware version on its label. Check that combination on TP-Link’s support page for the region where you bought the router and on the company’s End of Life list. A model name alone is not enough: TP-Link can end support for one hardware version while another remains supported.
If a newer official file exists, install it manually using the exact model, hardware version and purchase region. If the device has reached End of Maintenance (EOM) and no newer firmware is listed, treat it as unsupported: keep it only as a short-term measure with its exposure reduced, and plan a move to currently supported hardware.

Confirm whether updates have really ended
An absent automatic notification does not prove that TP-Link has stopped publishing firmware. Some routers receive a file through the web interface only after you download it from the support site. Begin with the information printed on the router rather than relying on a product family name.

- Record the complete model number, including suffixes.
- Record the hardware version exactly as printed. TP-Link may list separate firmware for different hardware revisions.
- Note the router’s purchase region. Firmware intended for another regional edition can be incompatible or violate local radio regulations.
- Keep the serial number and current firmware version available for support or recovery.
On some products the label is underneath the unit; others print the information on the rear or on the original packaging. If the label is difficult to read, the router’s administration interface normally displays the model and hardware version as well.

2. Check the regional support listing
Open TP-Link’s support page for the country or region in which the router was purchased. Search for the exact model and select the matching hardware version. Compare the newest listed firmware with the version shown in the router’s administration page. TP-Link specifically directs owners to download firmware from the official site for the device’s purchase location because regional files differ.
Then consult TP-Link’s “TP-Link End of Life Products” list. The US list was last updated September 21, 2026 and says that listings can change. It also instructs owners to identify the model and hardware version from the device label. A listing for a similar-looking model, or for a different hardware revision, does not establish your router’s status.
Understand EOS versus EOM
TP-Link uses two lifecycle milestones that are easy to confuse:
| Milestone | Meaning | What it means for firmware |
|---|---|---|
| End of Sales (EOS) | TP-Link stops accepting new orders for the product. | The router may still receive maintenance after sales stop. |
| End of Maintenance (EOM) | TP-Link stops support and maintenance, including security updates, for the applicable product or version. | Do not expect routine security fixes after the stated EOM date. |
Under TP-Link’s End-of-Life Policy, updated November 27, 2024, EOM is usually three years after EOS. That is a usual timetable, not a guarantee: TP-Link can provide longer maintenance, and local law can require a different rule. The product-specific listing controls, so check the date shown for your exact model and hardware version.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
TP-Link’s policy states: “TP-Link discontinues support and maintenance, including security updates, for such products.” That statement applies when the product has reached the relevant lifecycle endpoint; it is not a claim that every older router is already unsupported.
Look for a legitimate final firmware release
If the support page lists a version newer than the one installed, a manual update may still be available even when the router reports that it is current. Download only from TP-Link’s official regional support page and verify all three identifiers before opening the file:
- Exact model number.
- Exact hardware version.
- Region in which the router was purchased.
Do not substitute firmware for a neighboring model, a different hardware revision or another market. A file that looks newer can fail to install, disable features or render the router unusable. Follow the instructions attached to that model’s download rather than a generic procedure copied from another device.

Prepare before updating
- Read the release notes and confirm that the file addresses your model and hardware revision.
- Download the file to a computer connected by Ethernet if possible; avoid relying on an unstable Wi-Fi connection during the transfer.
- Export or record your configuration, including the internet connection type, Wi-Fi names and passwords, custom DNS, port forwards, parental-control rules and VPN settings. Some updates reset settings.
- Keep the router powered continuously. Do not unplug it, close the browser or reload the administration page while the firmware is being written.
- Disconnect unnecessary network changes until the router has restarted and connectivity has been tested.
Install the update manually
The exact menu names vary by model and firmware generation, so use the model-specific instructions. The general sequence is:

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Connect a computer to a LAN port with an Ethernet cable and open the router’s administration interface using the address and credentials you normally use.
- Open the firmware-update, system-tools or administration section identified in the model’s instructions. Note the currently installed firmware version and hardware version before changing anything.
- Choose the manual or local-file update option, then select the downloaded file. If the interface displays the file’s model or version, confirm it matches your notes.
- Start the update once. Leave the router powered on while it uploads, writes the image and reboots; this can temporarily interrupt every connection.
- After the router returns, sign in again and verify the new firmware version. Test internet access, both Wi-Fi bands, wired connections and any essential services such as voice or television supplied through the router.
- Restore settings only if necessary, and recheck security options after a reset. Re-enter passwords directly rather than leaving default credentials in place.
If the router rejects the file, stop rather than trying files from another region or hardware revision. Record the exact error, firmware filename and current version, then consult the instructions for that model or TP-Link regional support.
What to do after End of Maintenance
If the exact product listing shows that EOM has passed and no newer official firmware is available, the router is no longer receiving the maintenance assurance that supported equipment provides. TP-Link recommends moving to a newer supported product for better performance and security. Its legacy security guidance also says that not every legacy product can be patched.
This does not mean an unsupported router will fail immediately or that a particular vulnerability exists on your unit. It means future defects may have no official fix, and the manufacturer no longer promises continuing security updates. A vulnerability-specific number must not be generalized: for example, TP-Link’s May 12, 2026 advisory gives CVSS v3.0 score 6.5 (Medium) for CVE-2023-50224 in the legacy router and access-point products named in that advisory. That score describes that vulnerability and affected set, not all unsupported routers.

| Question | If the answer is “yes” | If the answer is “no” |
|---|---|---|
| Is the exact model/version still receiving security maintenance? | Continue normal update checks and apply official releases. | Proceed as if the device is unsupported. |
| Is an official patch listed for the issue you are addressing? | Install it using the matching regional procedure. | Do not rely on a third-party or mismatched image as a substitute. |
| Can you obtain a currently supported replacement for your region? | Schedule migration and verify compatibility first. | Use interim mitigations while arranging a supported option. |
| Does the replacement fit your service, coverage and device count? | Plan the installation around those requirements. | Reassess speed, wired ports, Wi-Fi coverage, ISP equipment and household demand before buying. |
No single replacement model is appropriate for every household. Confirm that the candidate is currently supported where you live, works with your internet service, covers the required area and supplies enough wired ports and wireless capacity. TP-Link’s lifecycle guidance supports replacing unsupported equipment, but it does not establish one universally suitable model.

Reduce exposure while replacement is pending
When immediate replacement is impossible, install the latest official firmware available for the exact version, then reduce the router’s attack surface. These measures are temporary risk reduction, not a substitute for security maintenance.
- Disable remote administration. Turn off management from the internet (sometimes called remote management or remote administration) unless you have a specific, controlled need for it.
- Turn off unneeded services. Disable features you do not use, such as unnecessary file sharing, vendor cloud controls, guest services or old remote-access protocols. Use the model’s documentation to identify the setting names.
- Restrict management to trusted internal networks. Manage the router only from devices on your home LAN. Avoid exposing its administration interface through port forwarding.
- Remove obsolete port forwards. Delete inbound rules that are no longer required, and review any host exposed through a DMZ setting.
- Use strong, unique credentials. Change default administrator and Wi-Fi passwords, and do not reuse the administrator password elsewhere.
- Separate untrusted devices. Put visitors and low-trust smart-home equipment on a guest network when the router supports useful isolation controls.
- Monitor for replacement triggers. An unfixable security advisory, repeated crashes, broken encryption support or inability to meet your ISP’s requirements should move replacement to the top of the list.
TP-Link’s May 2026 advisory says it “strongly recommends that customers using affected or potentially affected legacy devices take the following actions immediately.” That advisory’s recommendations apply to the affected devices it identifies; use the same principles here without assuming that every TP-Link model is affected by CVE-2023-50224.
Warranty and post-EOS service
End of Maintenance does not automatically cancel the limited hardware warranty. TP-Link’s policy says the warranty period remains tied to the purchase date, while claims and post-EOS service are governed by the applicable local warranty and sales terms. Check the regional terms before assuming that an unsupported router qualifies for repair, replacement or a free upgrade.

Warranty coverage also does not equal ongoing security support. A device can remain within a local warranty period while receiving no new firmware. Treat those as separate questions when deciding whether to keep using it.

Troubleshooting common update problems
The router says it is up to date, but the support page shows a newer file
Use the manual-update process. Confirm that the file is for the same hardware version and purchase region, and compare the release notes with the model number printed on the router.
The downloaded file will not install
Recheck the model suffix, hardware revision and region. Redownload from the official regional page, extract the file if the instructions require it, and use a wired connection. Do not force installation of a file intended for another revision.
The update completed but settings disappeared
Some firmware updates reset configuration. Re-enter the internet and Wi-Fi settings from your recorded backup, then change administrative credentials and verify that remote management and unnecessary services remain disabled.
The router will not boot after an interrupted update
Do not repeatedly power-cycle it or attempt random firmware images. Disconnect other network equipment, follow the model’s recovery instructions exactly and contact regional TP-Link support if those instructions do not restore operation. Keep the model, hardware version, serial number and firmware filename ready.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist
- Read and record the exact model and hardware version from the label.
- Check the support listing for the purchase region and compare the newest official firmware with the installed version.
- Check the End of Life list and product page for EOS and EOM dates.
- Install any matching official update manually, following the model-specific instructions.
- If EOM has passed with no newer file, schedule replacement with currently supported hardware.
- Until then, keep the latest official firmware, disable remote management and unused services, and restrict access to trusted internal networks.
- Check local warranty terms separately from firmware-support status.
